Chumash Poem by: Nessia Ferneau

Yishmael was joking And Sarah was hoping That Avraham would send him away. Sarah told him But Avraham said, “No way.” But Hashem told him to listen to Sarah’s voice. Avraham realized he had no choice. In the morning, they left with bread, water and a kiss. Hagar left with a slight hiss. In the middle of the desert, they ran out of water. Every second, it seemed to get hotter. Hagar put her son under a tree. From a distance of two shots of a bow, she said in a plea: “Hashem, don’t make my son die; I think I’m gonna cry!” A Malach of Hashem came down; “Yishmael will not die,” it said, “Hooray, hooray! By the time people come, my son won’t be dead!” And that’s the end of our story now!

Classroom Close-Ups Ms. Griffin

November 4, 2008-11-05 Volume V, Issue 4

Reading skills are like building blocks. To learn to read well, children need the blocks of knowing the sounds of letters and the blocks of knowing the meanings of words (vocabulary), word parts (grammatical markers) and groups of words (overall meaning or semantics). So, how is reading taught in our first grade classroom? Well… it is certainly a balancing act! Therefore, it would seem appropriate that we use a “balanced” approach to ensure that each student will learn to read. This balanced approach to teaching reading combines a strong foundation in phonics and includes a multitude of other reading strategies. Phonics focuses on the sounds of letters and words. Our first graders are actively involved in lessons that help them associate printed letters and combinations of letters with their corresponding sounds. Students are given many strategies to unlock or decode words. One such strategy is “sounding out” words as a way of figuring out new words. For example, in a recent phonics lesson, “back” was sounded out as “bb-a-ck.” Next, we made an impressive list of other words that end with –ack. During independent work, students continue with exercises on letter sounds, matching pictures with spoken words and short and long vowels, to give a few examples. The reading strategies used in our classroom are based on the understanding that reading is finding the meaning in written language. Multiple experiences with words, written and spoken, are what children need to learn meanings of words. Depending on the day, our first graders are actively engaged in lessons focused on oral vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, grammar and writing. One of our areas of concentration thus far has been on analyzing story and text structures, as well as identifying sequence of events of a story. We have been alternating between fiction and non-fiction materials. Since students need more than one kind of instruction to gain the skills to recognize and manipulate the sounds of letters and words and the skills they require to understand what they read, this balanced approach proves to be very effective. Throughout our day, students participate in these components of a balanced literacy program: Reading Aloud: Teacher reads selection aloud to students

• Provides adult model of fluent reading • Develops sense of story/text • Develops vocabulary • Encourages prediction • Builds a community of readers • Develops active listening

Shared Reading: Teacher and students read text together

• Demonstrates awareness of text • Develops sense of story or content • Promotes reading strategies • Develops fluency and phrasing • Increases comprehension • Encourages politeness and respect

Guided Reading: Teacher introduces a selection at student's instructional level

• Promotes reading strategies

Page 4: E.S.T.E.R. · ... (Night Out at Max’s) for Rosh Chodesh Kislev. ... matching pictures with spoken words and short and long vowels, ... For more information, ...

• Increases comprehension • Encourages independent reading • Expands belief in own ability

Independent Reading: Students read independently

• Encourages strategic reading • Increases comprehension • Supports writing development • Extends experiences with a variety of written texts • Promotes reading for enjoyment and information • Develops fluency • Fosters self-confidence by reading familiar and new text

Modeled/Shared Writing: Teacher and students collaborate to write text; teacher acts as scribe

• Develops concepts of print • Develops writing strategies • Supports reading development • Provides model for a variety of writing styles • Models the connection among and between sounds, letters, and words • Produces text that students can read independently • Necessitates communicating in a clear and specific manner

Interactive Writing: Teacher and students compose together using a "shared pen" technique in which students do some of the writing

• Provides opportunities to plan and construct texts • Increases spelling knowledge • Produces written language resources in the classroom • Creates opportunities to apply what has been learned

Independent Writing: Students write independently

• Strengthens text sequence • Develops understanding of multiple uses of writing • Supports reading development • Develops writing strategies • Develops active independence

Since all children learn differently, this balanced approach to teaching reading can give all our students the skills they need to read well. Teaching reading is a hugely complicated task. So much so that I have heard it said, "Teaching Reading IS Rocket Science."
