this year, string® turns 70. it shouldn’t be possible. the world keeps changing, yet the string® system remains contemporary, year after year. that’s sustainability in its purest form. in 2019 our basic concept is unchanged. new parts still fit perfectly with older ones.

the timeless design remains timeless. from now on string® can be used outdoors too. panels and shelves made of galvanized metal can withstand any weather.

the other novelty is more visual. the new beige colour gives a softer appearance, some-where in between the organic feeling of wood and the brightness of scandinavian white. softness is also added with this year’s blush edition of string® pocket.

all to keep standing the hard test of time.

string® was born in 1949. that year, sweden’s biggest publishing house, bonniers, arranged a competition. the idea was simple: if only people could find a good looking, affordable bookcase that was easy to mount, they would buy it. and once they had that bookcase, they would almost certainly want to buy more books. the winner of the competition would have to come up with a design that offered the ideal combination of extraordinary function and a distinctly modern look.

this was exactly the design of string® – the entry submitted by nils and kajsa strinning. of course neither the designers nor the jury could have ever imagined that the winning bookcase would still be loved and sought after 70 years later. over the years the basic design of string® hasn’t changed at all, though new functions, materials and colours have been introduced time and time again. thousands of new combinations are possible. no one has ever tried them all. so, let’s go. let’s create!

outdoorthis year the string® system is opening the door and taking a step outside. now you can furnish your favourite space without being limited by four walls and a ceiling. the galvanized metal can withstand any weather, and gives your string® a nice rugged look.

this catalogue, including all images and text, as well as the design of the string® shelving system and string® works desk and shelving system, are all protected by swedish and international copyright. the rights belong to string furniture ab. the string® shelving system was created in 1949 by the swedish architect nils strinning in collaboration with kajsa strinning. the string® works desk was created in 2013 by anna von schewen and björn dahlström. the design of the desk is protected as a registered design in the european union and a number of other countries. the string® brand name is owned by string furniture ab and is registered in the eu, norway, switzerland, usa, china and other countries around the world.
