    Yitro

    Exodus 18:1 - 20:23

Hearing of the miracles G-d performedfor Bnei Yisrael, Moshes father-in-law

Yitro arrives with Moshes wife and sons, reuniting the family in the wilderness. Yitro isso impressed by Moshes detailing of the Exodusfrom Egypt that he converts to Judaism. Seeingthat the only judicial authority for the entire

Jewish nation is Moshe himself, Yitro suggeststhat subsidiary judges be appointed to adjudicatesmaller matters, leaving Moshe free to attendto larger issues. Moshe accepts his advice. Bnei

Yisrael arrive at Mt. Sinai where G-d offers

them the orah. After they accept, G-d chargesMoshe to instruct the people not to approach themountain and to prepare for three days. On thethird day, amidst thunder and lightning, G-ds

voice emanates from the smoke-enshroudedmountain and He speaks to the Jewish People, giving them the en Commandments:

    1. Believe in G-d2. Dont worship other gods3. Dont use G-ds name in vain4. Observe Shabbat

    5. Honor your parents6. Dont murder7. Dont commit adultery8. Dont kidnap or dont steal9. Dont testify falsely10. Dont covet.

After receiving the first two commandments, theJewish People, overwhelmed by this experience ofthe Divine, request that Moshe relay

G-ds word to them. G-d instructs Moshe

to caution the People of Israel regarding theirresponsibility to be faithful to the One who spoketo them.

    Yitro Heard

his parasha bears the name of a non Jew.

Yitro, was not a Hebrew, he was priest inMadian. Te parasha starts with the words:

    P

OverviewAnd Yitro heard. (Exodus 18:1.)and the Zohar asks:Did only Yitro hear and the whole world did not hear?Is it not written, the nations heard and shuddered?

Te answer is that the whole world heard and werenot humbled, while Yitro heard and was humbled and

was drawn close to fear God.Many hear, but few really take to heart what they

hear. As the Midrash (anchuma Yitro 2) puts it,Tere are those who hear and lose, and those whohear and profit. Hearing and listening properly arethe key to ones success in this world. Te Midrash(Shmot Rabbah 27:9) offers the following allegory onthe verse, Incline your ear and come to Me; hear and

your soul shall live (Isaiah 55:3)Rabbi Zev Leff says So precious are the Jewish

people to God that He entices them. He said to them,If one falls from a roof and his whole body is injured, and the doctor visits him and puts a bandage on his

head, arms and legs, and all his body, he becomestotally enveloped in bandages. I am not like that.Man has 248 organs and one of them is the ear. If thewhole body is sullied with sin, but the ear hears andlistens, then the whole body receives life.

Before the orah tells us, And God spoke, we mustfirst learn what it means to listen. Unless there is anear to hear, even the most powerful message from themouth of God Himself is lost. For that reason, Yitroheard, precedes the giving of the orah.

    Ten Commandments

his is the orah portion containing thegiving of the en Commandments. Did youknow that there are differences in the en

Commandments as stated inn this parasha (Ex 20:1-14) and related later in parasha Veetchanan (Deut5:6-18.)

    H I

he orah states: Ten Moses went up toGod, and the LORD called to him from themountain and said, Tis is what you are to

say to the house of Jacob and what you are to tellthe people of Israel (Ex. 19:3.)Te sages of Israelhave asked the question why in this text G-d said toMoshe to speak to the House of Jacob and to theChildren of Israel. Tey say that According to oursages, the House of Jacob refers to the women and

    Parasha

Children of Israel refers to the men. Since the houseof Jacob was given first, that means that women haveheard the orah first. Why? Te Midrash explains it asfollows: G-d said, When I created the world, Chava(Eve) heard the commandment not to eat of the ree ofknowledge from Adam (the first man) and not from Me.

As a result, this commandment was transgressed. Now

I will tell Moshe to speak to the women first. Tis way,the orah and mitzvot will be preserved!Tis shows that the survival of Israel and the

transmission of Biblical values throughout thegenerations depends more on women than on men; foras teachers, parents, and role models, they influence

what goes on in the home; and what goes on in thehome influences how the next generation will act!

    O E W

he orah states: You yourselves have seen what

I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagleswings and brought you to myself. (Ex. 19:4)

Our sages explain that other birds are afraid of theeagle. Terefore, they carry their young below so theeagle wont see them. But the eagle is only afraid ofthe hunter. It carries its young on its wings, saying, itis better for the arrow of the hunter to go into me thaninto my offspring!

Similarly, G-d placed His cloud of glory between theEgyptians and Israel, like the eagle who places himselfbetween the arrow and his young.

Te analogy is also in a deeper sense: WhenIsrael came out of Egypt, they could not observe thecommandments, even to the extent that the angelssaid, Why are the Jewish people being saved whilethe Egyptians are being drowned? Both Israel and theEgyptians have worshipped idols! G-d said, Let thearrows (their complaint) go into Me... but I will save theChildren of Israel.

    G- R

he orah states, And now if you will certainlylisten to My voice and observe My convenant, you

will be to Me a treasure from all peoples for Mineis the entire world. And you will be to Me a kingdomof Cohanim (priests) and a holy nation (Exodus 19:5).Rashi, the great commentator, cites the Mechilta on thisverse that All beginnings are difficult. When one triesto accomplish for orah, he might be discouraged whenhe finds himself running into difficulties and go from

enthusiastic to disillusioned. He might tell himself,Tings are so difficult that Ill never accomplish. Illnever get anywhere even if I do try, so I might as

well give up right now. I remember that some 30or 40 years ago I had the same feeling. It was thefeeling of Rabbi Shaul I do not understand what Ido. For what I want to do I do not do, but what Ihate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, Iagree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer Imyself who do it, but it is sin living in me. (Rom.7:15-17)If you ever feel this way, remember that allbeginnings are difficult. Expect difficulties when

you commence doing something and you wont bediscouraged by them. Te only way to consistentlymeet your goals is by being persistent.

Regardless of how difficult you find it at first, aslong as you consider your original goal worthwhile, keep your eyes on the Messiah, he will give you

enough strength to follow what is written in theorah. Tat is the only way anyone succeeds. Veryfrequently, the difficulties are short-lived, and as

you persevere you will find things becoming easierand easier. We can conclude with Shaul who said:

What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue mefrom this body of death? Tanks be to God through Yeshua Mashiach Adonenu! (Rom. 7:24-25)

    N I

he orah states: Do not make any gods tobe alongside me; do not make for yourselvesgods of silver or gods of gold (Ex 20:23)

portion concludes with the Almighty tellingMoses to instruct the Jewish people not to makeany images of G-d. Tey were then commandedto make an earthen altar; and eventually to makea stone altar, but without the use of a sword ormetal tool.

    Honor your parents

    New

    sletter

    P

    arasha

he Brith Hachadasha says: Honor yourfather and mother which is thefirst commandment with a promise

(Eph. 6:2.) In the almud we find wonderfultales which illustrate the extent to which our

sages went in order to perform this mitzvah. Forexample: When Rabbi arfons mother wantedto retire for the evening, the almudic sagewould bend down so that she could use him as astepping stool to go up to her bed.

Once when Rabbi arfon noticed that hismother didnt have her shoes, he placed hishands under her feet to protect her from therough ground.

Te talmud relates that when Rabbi arfonbecame very ill, his mother asked the sages topray for her son. She told them how far her sonwent in order to honor her. Te sages repliedthat they will indeed pray for him, but as far asthe mitzvah of honoring parents, after all thathe did for you, he hasnt yet observed even halfof the mitzvah!

Honoring our parents passes along a strongmessage to our children, who hopefully will

    honor their parents in turn!

    Taste of Sabbath

ARoman Emperor once asked thealmudic sage Rabbi Yehoshua, Whydoes the food you eat on Saturday have

such a wonderful aroma and taste so delicious?Rabbi Yehoshua replied, We have a special

spice called Shabbat which gives our Saturdayfood its wonderful taste.

Te Emperor asked Rabbi Yehoshua, Giveme some of that spice. Rabbi Yehoshuareplied, Tis spice works only for those whoobserve Shabbat, for those who dont observethe Shabbat it will be of no benefit!Te almud tells that Shamai the Elder had

a unique way of remembering Shabbat all weeklong. From the beginning of the week, he wouldlook out for things to buy for Shabbat. If he

found a nice piece of meat, he would save it for ShabbatIf he found something better later in the week, he wouldeat what he already had and save the better piece forShabbat. Tus, it was said about Shamai, All week longhe ate for the sake of Shabbat!

Te almudic sage Rabbi achlipha said, Allsustenance which a person will receive during the year is

already established at the beginning of the year, on RoshHashana. Except that which a person spends in honorof Shabbat, Yom ov (holidays), and for the education oftheir children to study orah. Te less one spends forthese, the less they receive and the more they spend themore they receive in return. Tus, spending for Shabbais not an expense, it is a good investment.

    Haftara

    Isaiah 6:1 - 7:6; 9:5-6

he text of the Haftara is a revelation of Godto the prophet Isaiah and his calling for theministry: Ten I heard the voice of the Lord

saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?And I said, Here am I; send me! (Isaiah 6:8).

P: In the parasha God revealed himself tothe people of Israel: Ten the LORD said to Moses,I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, in orderthat the people may hear when I speak with you and so

trust you ever after. (Exodus 19:9). Miriam was thefirst prophetess of Israel. God uses men and women toreveal his will to the humanity.

heaven. (Matt 5:17-19)and Yochanan tells it isthe condition to be the kehilah Ten the dragonwas enraged at the woman and went off to makewar against the rest of her offspring thosewho obey Gods commandments and hold to thetestimony of Jesus. (Rev. 12:17.) And he addslater Tis calls for patient endurance on the part

of the saints who obey Gods commandmentsand remain faithful to Jesus. (Rev. 14:12.)Tusit is clear that for the Brith Hachadasha thecommandments are important and still valid inthe time of the Mashiach. Te biggest questionis not if the commandments are still valid or not,but the purpose of the commandments. Troughthe orah we understand what is the meaning ofthe word sin. Yochanan says Everyone whosins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness.

    (1John 3:4)According to the Bible we are sinnersby nature, that means it is impossible for us tosatisfy to the exigencies of the Law of G-d andto keep it perfectly, that is why we need Yeshuato help us in our every day life and to keep theorah. We know that the law is spiritual; butI am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do notunderstand what I do. For what I want to do Ido not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do whatI do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it issin living in me. I know that nothing good livesin me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have thedesire to do what is good, but I cannot carry itout. For what I do is not the good I want to do;no, the evil I do not want to do this I keep ondoing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, itis no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in methat does it. So I find this law at work: WhenI want to do good, evil is right there with me.For in my inner being I delight in Gods law;

but I see another law at work in the membersof my body, waging war against the law of mymind and making me a prisoner of the law of sinat work within my members. What a wretchedman I am! Who will rescue me from this bodyof death? Tanks be to God through JesusChrist our Lord! So then, I myself in my mindam a slave to Gods law, but in the sinful naturea slave to the law of sin. (Rom 7:14-25)

with wonderful and great manifestation of the Lord Isaw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; andthe hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were inattendance above him; each had six wings: with twothey covered their faces, and with two they coveredtheir feet, and with two they flew.

And one called to another and said:

Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;the whole earth is full of his glory.

Te pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices ofthose who called, and the house filled with smoke. (Isaiah 6:1-4).

P:When the Lord appeared to Israel on theMount Sinai it was also an extraordinary apprearanceand with wonderful manifestation: On the morning ofthe third day there was thunder and lightning, as wellas a thick cloud on the mountain, and a blast of a trum-

pet so loud that all the people who were in the camptrembled. Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke, because the LORD had descended upon it in fire; thesmoke went up like the smoke of a kiln, while the wholemountain shook violently. As the blast of the trumpetgrew louder and louder, Moses would speak and Godwould answer him in thunder. (Exodus 19:16; 18, 19)

    Brit Hachadasha

    Romans 7

he parasha this week is the central parashaof the book of Exodus, it describes how theen Commandments were given to Israel

and it repeats to Israel that if they want to be blessedthey have to be faithful to the Lord and its covenant. It is in the Brith Hachadasha that the purpose of thecommandments is asked putting them in the rightperspective of the covenant. Te first point is thatkeeping the commandments are important and amust for the Kehilah of Yeshua. Yeshua affirmed the

commandments Do not think that I have come toabolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come toabolish them but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappearfrom the Law until everything is accomplished. Anyonewho breaks one of the least of these commandments andteaches others to do the same will be called least in thekingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teachesthese commands will be called great in the kingdomof
