Power balance is becoming tight & almost meager investment in new products.

Need of reduction of CO2 emission

Improved management of power : increased efficiency

Need of up-to-date and exact information of power consumption

ANSWER Automatic meter reading(AMR)

Information through web

may contribute to reduction of energy and peak power consumption.

An electronic meter can transmit its readings by communication technology to a central billing office.

Communication technologies can be radio, telephonic lines, WiFi or GSM(Global System of Mobile) modems.

Table 1: BENEFITS FOR ACTORS

Objectives of Project:

Test technology for AMR and Two way communications.

To test and evaluate the application of different tariff rates according to the demand and customer’s reaction to it.

The network companies where responsible for establishment & operation of technology ,for collection of meter values.

SINTEF (Operating Company) received the meter values and analyzed them to determine the customer response to different prices and found much more problems than expected.

There were problems with the technology and vendors as well.

CHALLENGES:

Technological Challenges:

GSM modems that frequently went into blocked mode.

Some of the applications were not work properly at their installation site , so site was needed to change.

Lack of Integration in IT systems:

Lack of standardized interface between customer and network operator for TWC and other IT system like CIS ,led to many errors during exchange of information.

Lack of experience:

In initial stages, Network owners and vendors had no such experience of establishment on a large scale. Initially the development of communication was low, but with the passage of time it got

improved.
