the leaders of the ShanghaiCooperation Organization(SCO) member statesconcluded their latest summiton Thursday, theyunanimously rejected militaryintervention as a way toresolve international hotspotissues. According to astatement that came after thesummit, all SCO membercountries oppose militaryintervention in Syria and rejectthe idea of a regime change inthe country.

The leaders also rejectedthe idea of using militarymeans to solve the Iraniannuclear dispute, insteadchoosing to support dialogueand other diplomaticmethods.

It is a common experiencein human history, both recentor remote, that meetingviolence with violence canonly beget more loss of lifeand spark hard-to-heal

Iran says its “natural” nuclear rights must be recognized byworld powers

TEHERAN, 8 June — A senior advisor to Iran’s SupremeLeader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the five permanentmembers of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1)must recognize Iran’s “natural right” to develop peacefulnuclear technology, the Press TV reported on Thursday.“Given that the Islamic republic has always proven its goodwillin nuclear talks and its commitment to the InternationalAtomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the P5+1 must also recognizeIran’s natural right to attain peaceful nuclear energy,” Ali-Akbar Velayati was quoted as saying.

Velayati added that Iran’s nuclear rights should berecognized also because the Islamic republic is a committedsignatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), saidthe report. talks for cooperation based on a clear logic and specificinitiatives,” he said. Jalili, who is also Iran’s Supreme NationalSecurity Council ( SNSC) Secretary, stated that unless theP5+1 gear up for meetings at experts and deputies level, holding further talks merely for the sake of discussions wouldbe of no avail, said Press TV. The Baghdad talks on Iran’snuclear standoff concluded last month with a plan to holdanother round of talks in Moscow on 18-19 June.

CAMBRIDGE, 8 June— USastronomers say they’veseen evidence a massive blackhole is being ejected from itshost galaxy at several millionmiles per hour.

“It’s hard to believe thata supermassive black holeweighing millions of times themass of the sun could bemoved at all, let alone kickedout of a galaxy at enormousspeed,” said FrancescaCivano of the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre forAstrophysics, who led thestudy.

Observations fromNASA’s Chandra X-rayObservatory suggest theblack hole collided andmerged with another blackhole and received a powerfulrecoil kick from gravitationalwave radiation resulting fromthe collision sufficient to pushthe merged black hole out ofthe galaxy.

“[These] new datasupport the idea thatgravitational waves — ripplesin the fabric of space firstpredicted by Albert Einsteinbut never detected directly

— can exert an extremelypowerful force,” Civano saidin a release from the Chandraheadquarters in Cambridge,Mass. The finding couldmean there are giant blackholes roaming undetected outin the vast spaces betweengalaxies, researchers said.

“These black holeswould be invisible to us,”study co-author Laura Blechasaid, “because they haveconsumed all of the gassurrounding them after beingthrown out of their homegalaxy.”—Internet

where appropriate.The researchers claimed

their study was the first toprovide direct evidence of alink between exposure fromCT radiation in childhood andlater cancer risk. “Of utmostimportance is that where CT isused, it is only used wherefully justified from a clinicalperspective,” said lead authorMark Pearce of NewcastleUniversity’s Institute ofHealth and Society. As a vitaldiagnostic technique, use ofthe CT scan has increasedrapidly in the past 10 years, particularly in the United

States, the researchers said.“However, potential

cancer risks exist due to theionising radiation used in CTscans, especially in childrenwho are more radiosensitivethan adults.” Computerizedtomography — commonlyknown as CT — is an X-raytechnique that producesimages of the body’s internalstructures in cross sections.

The researchers studiednearly 180,000 people whounderwent a CT scan aschildren or young adults(under 22) in Britain between1985 and 2002. Of these, 74were subsequently diagnosedwith leukaemia and 135 withbrain cancer according to datafor the period 1985 to 2008.

The team calculated thatcompared to patients whoreceived a radiation dose ofless than five milli-Grays(mGy), those who were givena cumulative dose of 30 mGyhad about three times the riskof developing leukaemia(cancer of the blood or marrow)later in life. Those whoreceived 50 to 74 mGy hadthrice the risk of brain tumours.

The study did notcompare children who hadbeen scanned against those

who had not been scanned.Put into context, this

means that among every10,000 patients who receivedone CT scan before the age of10, there would be one extracase of leukaemia and oneextra brain tumour per 10 mGyof radiation in the 10 yearsafter exposure. “Furtherrefinements to allow reductionin CT doses should be apriority, not only for theradiology community, butalso for manufacturers,” saidPearce.

“Alternative diagnosticprocedures that do not involveionising radiation exposure, such as ultrasound and MRI(magnetic resonanceimaging) might be ap-propriate in some clinicalsettings.” Commenting on thestudy, Andrew Einstein of theColumbia University Me-dical Centre in New York saidPearce and his colleagues’work confirmed that CT scans“almost certainly produce asmall cancer risk”. “Use of CTscans continues to rise, generally with good clinicalreasons, so we must redoubleour efforts to justify andoptimise every CT scan.”

Battery fluid leak may be a factorin China car fire

BEIJING, 8 June—Flammable fluids leakingfrom a BYD electric car batterymight have contributed to afire following a high-speedfatal crash in China lastmonth, a BYD executive toldReuters. However, Stella Li,senior vice president ofWarren Buffett-backedChinese battery and carproducer BYD Co, defendedthe safety of electric cars thecompany designs and sellsin China. Police are stillinvestigating the crash, whichoccurred in Shenzhen, China, early on the morning of 26May when a Nissan GT-Rsports car travelling at least180 kilometres per hour (110mph) crashed into the BYDe6 taxi which later caughtfire, according to BYD. Thetaxi driver and two passengersdied.

“No car company could

design an electric car or agasoline-fueled car that couldwithstand a 180-kph crash, especially from beingslammed from the backside,”Li said in an interview thisweek. The BYD executivesaid it will likely be weeks, ifnot months, before police cansay anything conclusive, ifat all, on the cause of the fire. But she said there is “a bigchance” that liquid electrolyte— one of the three primaryfunctional components in abattery — may have leakedafter the crash.

Those liquids may havecaught fire, ignited by sparksfrom high-voltage cables orscreeching wheels, said Li,who runs BYD’s USoperations in Los Angeles.BYD has sold about 500 e6cars in China since last year, with at least half of them soldto taxi operators and other

fleet customers. The accidenthas triggered fears amongsome investors thatautomakers were over-confident about the safety ofenergy-packed batteriespowering electric cars, andcould be a talking point atBYD’s annual shareholders’meeting on Friday inShenzhen.

News reports and photosof the crash were widelycirculated in China, andBYD’s shares fell to a seven-month low on 28 May, thefirst trading day after thecrash. SINGAPORE, 8 June—The global economy is set to slowin the near term amid renewed uncertainty stemming from theeurozone debt crisis, weak recovery in the United States andslowdown in large emerging economies, the MonetaryAuthority of Singapore said on Thursday. “The trade-orientedAsian economies are likely to see activity moderating for therest of the year, although resilient domestic demand willprovide some support,” it said in a report.

Underpinned by strong gains in the manufacturingsector, especially the normalization of computer disk-driveproduction following the disruption caused by the Thaifloods at the end of 2011, the Singapore economy grew by10 percent quarter on quarter on a seasonally adjustedannualized basis in the first three months of the year. TheSingapore economy is expected to remain restrained for therest of the year against the backdrop of subdued globalgrowth, it said, projecting the gross domestic product to growby 1-3 percent.

The inflation forecast also remained unchanged at 3.5-4.5 percent. The Monetary Authority said the G3 economieson average grew by a mild 1.6 percent quarter on quarter ona seasonally adjusted annualized basis in the first threemonths of the year. The United States economy grew by 1.9percent, lower than the growth of 3 percent for the previousquarter.”The main drag on growth ... came from continuedcutbacks in federal defense spending as well as smaller stateand local government budgets,” it said.—Xinhua

Singapore central bank saysglobal economy set to slow in

near term edition of Cell, could lead to new drugs for preventing ortreating obesity. In their search for new targets for obesitytherapies, scientists have focused on the hypothalamus, atiny brain structure that regulates appetite. Numerous studiessuggest that the regulatory mechanism is concentrated inneurons that express a neuropeptide, or brain modulator, called AgRP. But the specific factors that influence AgRPexpression are not known.

The CUMC researchers found new clues to appetitecontrol by tracing the actions of insulin and leptin. Bothhormones are involved in maintaining the body’s energybalance, and both are known to inhibit AgRP. “Surprisingly, blocking either the insulin or leptin signaling pathway haslittle effect on appetite,” says study leader Domenico Accili, professor of medicine at CUMC. “We hypothesized that bothpathways have to be blocked simultaneously in order toinfluence feeding behaviour.”

To test their hypothesis, the researchers created a strainof mice whose AgRP neurons lack a protein that is integralto both insulin and leptin signaling. As the researchershypothesized, removing this protein — Fox01 — had aprofound effect on the animals’ appetite.

A patient lies on a bed in a ward reserved for peoplesuffering from dengue fever in a hospital at BarrioObrero District in Asuncion on 14 April, 2011. The

LONDON, 8 June— One of the grimmest legacies of the warin the Pacific is still being fought 70 years on, but a victoryover dengue, the intensely painful “break-bone fever” whichthat conflict helped spread around the world, may be in sight. The US Army, which like its Japanese enemy lost thousandsof men to the mosquito-borne disease in the 1940s, has piledresources into defeating the tropical killer. But it may beabout to see the battle to develop the first vaccine won notin the United States but by French drug company Sanofi.

The Paris-based firm hopes for positive results inSeptember from a key trial among children in Thailand thatwould set it on course to market a shot in 2015 which wouldprevent an estimated 100 million cases of dengue infectioneach year. Of 20,000 annual deaths, many are of children. ForSanofi, which has invested 350 million euros ($440 million)in a new French factory to make the three-dose vaccine, itcould mean a billion euros in yearly sales as half the worldis exposed to the disease, notably in fast-expanding tropicalcities from Rio and Mexico to Manila and Mumbai.

But like British rival GlaxoSmithKline, whose newmalaria shot has shown promise against another mosquito-

carried scourge, Sanofi is also preparing for pressure to makeits drug accessible to billions too poor to pay the likelymarket price. It has been long wait. Identified in localoutbreaks in the Americas, Africa and Asia since the 18thcentury — and noted as a serious military hindrance by USgenerals in their 1898 war against Spain in Cuba and thePhilippines — dengue was spread to global pandemicproportions in part due to the massive movements of armiesthrough the Pacific theatre in World War Two.—Reuters

VIENNA, 8 June—Iran has accused the InternationalAtomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of conducting secretiveintelligence activities, the Austrian Press Agency reportedon Wednesday. The accusations were made by Iranianambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh on the sidelines of theIAEA Governors conference in Vienna, where he accused theIAEA of using secretive means to obtain information onIranian facilities.

“Unfortunately the Agency (IAEA), who should beplaying the role of an international technical organization,is to an extent also playing the role of an intelligenceagency,” he told reporters. Soltanieh criticized in particularWestern councillors and media for speculation about apossible secret atomic weapons programme. He reaffirmedthe “solely peaceful” aims of Iran’s nuclear programme. OnFriday a bilateral meeting is planned in which access forIAEA experts to Iran’s facilities, documents, and nuclearexperts will be discussed.— Xinhua
