BEIJING, 3 Nov—Thesnows of Kilimanjaro, fa-mous for an ErnestHemingway’s short storyof the same name, coulddisappear by 2022, accord-ing to a new study pub-lished on Tuesday in theProceedings of the NationalAcademy of Sciences.

For the first time in al-most 12,000 years, basedon ice-core analysis, Af-rica’s highest peak prob-ably will be ice-free asearly as 2022 or as late as2033, said glaciologist

Lonnie Thompson ofOhio State University, who led the study.

“Of the ice coverpresent in 1912,”Thompson and his col-leagues write in the paper,“85 percent has disap-peared and 26 percent ofthat present in 2000 isnow gone.”

However, researchersstudying the mountaintop, including those involvedin this study, differ in theirconclusions on how muchof the melting could result

from human activity orother climatological influ-ences.

Some studies have sug-gested the ice loss is dueprimarily to what somesee as local factors: lesssnowfall and more subli-mation — a process thatturns ice directly into wa-ter vapour at below freez-ing temperatures.

The new study appearsto strengthen the argu-ment that global warmingis to blame in addition tosublimation. —Xinhua

NEW YORK, 3 Nov— Crude oil rose and the dollarfell on Monday on strong worldwide factory data anda surprise jump in US pending home sales, but USstocks see-sawed before ending higher after a sell-offin banking shares.

The data boosted risk appetite as it pointed to steadyimprovement in the economy, but critical remarks bya Federal Reserve official caused investors to sell fi-nancial shares and snuff an early rally on Wall Street.

The major US equity indexes had risen about 1percent as the data and strong results from Ford Mo-tor Co (FN) spurred broad-based gains and soothedworries over the strength of the recovery.

But Jon Greenlee, associate director of the FederalReserve’s Division of Banking Supervision and Regu-lation, said US banks are at risk of sizable new loanlosses, particularly on commercial property.—Internet

Whooping cough immunity may last 30 years

LORRAINE, 3 Nov–French scientists say theprolific virulence andgrowth of bacteria inspace, coupled with re-duced production of anti-bodies, might limit futurespace travel.

The researchers fromNancy-University in Lor-raine, France, said long-term space flights mightcompromised by microbialhitchhikers, such as bacte-ria. That’s because spacetravel appears to weakenthe human immune system, while increasing the viru-lence and growth of mi-crobes, they said.

“When people think ofspace travel, often the vastdistances are what come tomind first,” said Jean-PolFrippiat, one of the report’sco-authors. “But even af-ter we figure out a way tocover these distances in areasonable amount oftime, we still need to fig-ure out how astronauts aregoing to overcome diseaseand sickness.”

Frippiat and colleaguessaid they based their con-clusions on studies show-ing that immune systemsof both people and animalsin space flight conditionsare significantly weaker

than their grounded coun-terparts. They also re-viewed studies that exam-ined the effects of spaceflight conditions and al-tered gravity on virulenceand growth of commonpathogens such as Salmo-nella, Ecoli and Staphylo-coccus. Those studies, they said, show such bac-teria reproduce more rap-idly in space flight condi-tions, leading to increasedrisk of contamination, colonization and seriousinfection.

The research appears inThe Journal of LeukocyteBiology.—Internet

ANN ARBOR, 3 Nov—US medical researcherssuggest whooping cough— pertussis — immunitymay last at least 30 yearson average.

The study, published inthe journal PLoS Patho-gens, used mathematicalmodels to test the theorywhooping cough has beenon the rise due to waningimmunity in vaccinated or

previously exposed peo-ple.

Pejman Rohani of theUniversity of Michigan inAnn Arbor, but based atthe University of Georgiaduring completion of thestudy, and Helen Wearingof the University of NewMexico in Albuquerqueconstructed two differentmathematical modelsbased on immunity

“extinctions.”They compared predic-

tions to incidence datafrom England and Walesfrom both the pre-vaccineera — 1945-1957 — andthe vaccine era —1958-1972 and found, on aver-age, whooping cough im-munity lasts at least 30years and perhaps as longas 70 years after naturalinfection.

“This is surprisingbecause clinical epidemi-ologists currently believethe duration of pertussisimmunity is somewherebetween 4-20 years,”Rohani says in a state-ment.

However, Rohanipoints out that in the past20 years or so, vaccineshave quite fundamentallychanged and stimulate adifferent part of theimmune system — espe-cially in North America

Processed food increases depression riskLONDON, 3 Nov—Eat-

ing a lot of processed foodmay increase a person’srisk for depression, re-searchers in Britain found.

Tasnime N Akbaraly,Eric J Brunner, Jane EFerrie, Michael G Mar-mot and Mika Kivimak ofthe University CollegeLondon analyzed datafrom 3,486 participants— 26.2 percent women, mean age 55.6 years —from the Whitehall II pro-

Self-reported depres-sion was assessed fiveyears later using the

Center for EpidemiologicStudies — Depression(CES–D) scale.

The study, published inThe British Journal ofPsychiatry, found afteradjusting for potentialconfounders, participantswho ate at the highest lev-els of whole foods hadlower risk of depressionthan those who ate thelowest levels of wholefoods.

Chronic kidney diseaseis often missed

SAN DIEGO, 3 Nov—Primary care physiciansare failing to diagnosechronic kidney disease, especially in women, USresearchers say.

Study leader Dr MayaRao of Columbia Univer-sity in New York says pri-mary care doctors typi-cally order a blood testcalled creatinine to meas-ure kidney function, butthis alone is not a particu-larly accurate measure ofkidney function.

The serum creatinineshould also be pluggedinto a formula that gives

an estimated kidney filtra-tion rate — calledglomerular filtration rate— which is a much moreaccurate estimate of kid-ney function. Womenhave a lower glomerularfiltration rate than men forthe same level of serumcreatinine.

Rao and colleagues re-viewed records from al-most 900 patients at 18rural, community-basedprimary care clinics inOregon to investigate howprimary care physiciansdiagnosed known kidneydysfunction in patients.

“Chronic kidney dis-ease is very prevalent, uses a great deal of Medi-care dollars and needs tobe detected early in orderto begin an effective treat-ment plan,” Rao says in astatement. “Without earlydiagnosis and treatment, the patient may be morelikely to need dialysis andsuffer related conse-quences, such as heart dis-ease.”—Internet

US researchers rule out link betweenhepatitis B, pancreatic cancer

LOS ANGELES, 3 Nov —US researchers have found that hepatitis B does notincrease the risk for pancreatic cancer, a conclusion contradicting a previous studythat found a link between the two. The new study by researchers at Henry FordHospital was presented at the on-going annual meeting of the American Associa-tion for the Study of Liver Diseases in Boston.

Using data from Henry Ford Health System, the researchers looked at morethan 74,000 patients who were tested for hepatitis B between 1995 and 2008.

In the overall analysis, only age was found to be a significant predictor forpancreatic cancer.
