senateChai rperson’s Messagestudents at South Africa’s Universities and Institutions of higher learning, continue protesting against, what they believe, is an unjust educa-tion system in which high fees, economic inequality and the slow pace of transforma-tion that exclude the major-ity of South African students. The progressive protests are led by students demonstrat-ing against unreasonable and exclusionary fee increments being imposed by various universities. These protests underscore the very impor-tant call that affordability is critical for access to higher education. Access to educa-tion is the only tool we can use to transform the world as immortalized by former Presi-dent Nelson Mandela.

The National Development Plan for South Africa as well as White Paper on Post School Education, records that the Department of

Higher Education and Train-ing recognizes that independ-ent private institutions play an important role in the post-school education and training environment. The National Development Plan also re-quires the higher education sector to increase enrolment levels annually from 950 000 in 2010 to 1.6 million by 2030.

Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology, which was pre-viously known as PC Training & Business College, is South Africa’s most affordable High-er Education Institution and has been operating success-fully for the past 25 years. The Institution’s programmes meet full regulatory compli-ance and are Accredited by the Council on Higher Edu-cation and are registered on the National Qualifications Framework by the South Afri-can Qualifications Authority. The Institution is also regis-tered with the Department of Higher Education and Training as a Private Higher Education Institution and as an Employ-ment and Skills Development Agency (ESDA) which creates opportunities for collaborations.

The Institution has earned a place in the hearts of over 250 000 students who have successfully completed a range of quali-fications. It has also been Nationally & Internationally recognised for its pioneering efforts in improving the qual-ity of teaching for learning by integrating technology into the Curriculum improving success rates.

About Technical & Vocational Education (TVET)

RICHFIELD Technical Division operates in the occupational qualifications sub-framework, to roll out national occu-pational qualifications to learners who want a trade or occupation. Technical & Vocational Education & Training (TVET) equips people, not only with vocational skills, but with a broad range of knowl-edge, skills and attitudes that are now recognized as indispensable for mean-ingful participation in work and life.

TVET students obtaining both theoreti-cal and practical training are preferred for employment by the engineering sec-tor, according to research. The techni-cal Nated programmes include the Me-chanical, Electrical, Civil and Chemical Engineering fields. Studies in Engineer-ing provide opportunities in various sec-tors of the economy and addresses the national skill shortages and facilitates economic growth in the country.

The acquisition of technical skills makes one more employable in the formal la-bour market and also develops entre-preneurial skills across many disciplines.

The aim of the business studies Nated programmes are to equip learners with skills in general business practices. Learn-ers will be able to select a programme that best suites their employment opportunities. The programmes for the business studies Nated courses avail-able are Educare, Public Management,

Human Resource Management, Man-agement Assistant, Legal Secretary, Medi-cal Secretary, Busi-ness Management, Financial Manage-ment, Marketing Management, Public Relations, Tourism and Hospitality and Catering Services.

National Accredited Technical Education Diploma (NATED) programmes are deliv-ered under the auspices of the Depart-ment of Higher Education and Training. The programmes consist of 18 months theoretical studies at the college and 18 months relevant practical application in work places. Engineering studies range from N1-N6 while Business and Utility Studies range from N4-N6. The ultimate goal of the Nated courses is to award the student studying the course an N6 diploma.

Technical and Vocational Education will contribute to greater access to techni-cal and vocational programmes in the Higher Education band. The central question contained in the White Paper (DHET: 2013) refers to how skills devel-opment can support the creation of a development state. Technical education will make an individual a valuable asset to the changing technological global environment.

National Certificate: Occupationally Directed Education Training and Development Practices (NQF 5)

Purpose of Qualification

This qualification is for those who want to build on a FETC in any field to enter the field of ODETD as a potential career and have little or no previous exposure to ETD. The development of skills within and for the workplace is a priority within South Africa, as supported by legislation, national policies and strategies. Much of the needed skills development is carried out by people who have knowledge and skills within their area of expertise, but lack the required skills in relation to ETD. Many of the skills development objectives, nationally and within companies and organisations, are met through the efforts of ETD practitioners operating at NQF Level 5, and this certificate addresses the key competencies of such practitioners. This qualification will meet the needs of those who wish to progress beyond the FETC ODETD, or who wish to enter the field of ETD for the first time. The certificate will also help to increase the employment prospects of ETD practitioners, while helping to ensure quality and compe-tence within the ETD field. This qualification will provide a means to recognise ODETD practise at level 5 across five key ETD roles in a generalist capacity, with particular application possible in at least one role. Practitioners who wish to extend the skills in ETD to cover further ETD roles should select the Diploma ODETD, Level 5.

The purpose of the Diplo-ma in Information Technol-ogy is to provide students with an intermediate level of study covering the key as-pects of Information Technol-

ogy. This Diploma includes key elements from the re-designed three year qualifi-cation. This two year quali-fication is currently being phased out in accordance

with the implementation of the new Higher Education Qualifications Framework as required by the Council on Higher Education.

The qualification re-mains valid and is ac-credited by the Coun-cil on Higher Education and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Train-ing. This qualification has been enormously successful and many thousands of students have completed it in the last decade.

Although the content is revised and updated in the same manner as any other qualification, we would recommend students to consider the new three (3) year diploma which pro-vides greater depth and is aimed at de-veloping both generic and vocational skills in specialized areas.

The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology is to en able the qualifying student to enter various sub-categories within the Infor-mation Technology industry. The degree has been struc-tured to allow students to specialize in one of three possible areas within the IT

industry. The curriculum has specific outcomes aimed at developing professional, generic and specific skills required within each area of specialization.

All aspects of the programme have extensive practical ele-ments, with emphasis on

group and individual work, and the associated business, communication and presen-tation skills. In addition, the Student is assured of be-ing exposed to the latest, cutting-edge IT technologies and strategies.

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSc IT) - 3 Years

SpecialisationsA - Specialisation in Systems Development B - Specialisation in System Engineering C- Specialisation in Information Technology

Today Information technology goes beyond the design, and develop-ment of computer systems (hard-ware and software) and networks, which were historically used for ob-taining, processing, and distributing data. This field has been growing at a very rapid pace over the last few years, and this growth is expected to remain stable. Thousands of new jobs are been created by IT as we move away from the Information Age and Knowledge Age to the Digital Age.

Students will learn how to deter-mine information needs by under-standing user expectations and converting these to design ele-ments in adressing how to auto-mate business processes, ensuring safeguards with regards to cyber security, cloud computing, internet of things, mobile computing and digital applications development.

The BSc in IT allows students to choose cutting-edge technology specialisations including artificial intelligence and programming or software engineering. Those seek-ing a more strategic direction in this space may choose to specialise in IT Strategic Management and Risk Management
