A Promise is KePt

6 WEEK OF APRIL 1, 2018

Unifying prinCiplePeople often question the promises of

their leaders. How can they come to have assurance in the midst of doubt? In the breaking of bread and making Himself known to His disciples, the risen Christ kept His promises.

BIBLICAL EMPHASES:• In this passage, Luke emphasizes

that Jesus’ resurrection was promised throughout the Scriptures.

• Although Jesus told His followers that He would rise again, they did not understand this promise.

• While the early focus of the passage is on the empty tomb, the true emphasis is that Jesus rose from the grave, just as He had foretold.

TARGET EMPHASESPRESCHOOLERS: This age group can learn that Jesus’ resurrection was a unique event that gives us salvation. YOUNGER CHILDREN: These children are beginning to understand that belief in Jesus’ resurrection is a promise of eternal life.

OLDER CHILDREN: This age group understands that Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection were foretold in the Bible.

LESSON OVERVIEW

Today’s lesson focuses on the wonderful event of the resurrection, which is our

reason for celebrating Easter. Today, keep in mind that some children may be attend-ing church for the first time.

Several women went to Jesus’ tomb with spices to treat His body. At this time, they did not understand Jesus’ promise about His return or the Scriptures about Christ’s resurrection. When they found the tomb empty, they were astonished. Then angels appeared and reminded the women that Je-sus had told them that this would happen. Upon hearing this, the women rushed to tell the other disciples.

Two of Jesus’ followers who were travel-ing also struggled to understand why Jesus had died. Jesus walked with them. The two did not recognize Him. Jesus then explained how the Scriptures foretold the Messiah’s suffering and resurrection. Suddenly the two disciples recognized Jesus, and He dis-appeared. They went to the others and told them everything they had seen.

King James Version New Revised Standard VersionLuke 24:1–12, 30–35

31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

31 Then their eyes were opened, and they rec-ognized him; and he vanished from their sight.32 They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” 33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

SUGGESTED TEACHING PLAN FOR GROWING WITH JESUSMaterials Needed: plastic Easter eggs, candy, crayons

1. GETTING STARTED: Before the class arrives, fill the plastic Easter eggs with a piece of candy. Hide the eggs around the classroom. Greet the students as they enter. When everyone is seated, begin the class with prayer, and sing the hymn together. 2. A GREAT BEGINNING: Ask the students if they have ever been surprised. Ask the ones who answer to share some examples. Explain that the lesson shows how Jesus’ followers were surprised to see Jesus alive three days after His death. 3. AN IMPORTANT LESSON: Read the lesson to the class. Tell the students to search for the Easter eggs you hid. Make sure each student gets an egg. Explain that eggs remind us of new life because baby chickens hatch from eggs. On Easter, we use these eggs to celebrate that Jesus gives us new life. Allow the students to open the eggs. Tell them about how the women at Jesus’ tomb were surprised to find the tomb empty. The eleven disciples and the two who had walked with Jesus were surprised too. Jesus’ return was great news for all of the disciples who saw Jesus risen from the dead and believed.4. KEEPING IT GOING: Give the students time to complete the activity in their books. Review the main point of the lesson again—that Jesus is alive and can save us from our sins. Ask the class if they have any prayer requests. End the class with prayer. Be sure to pray for each of the requests.5. JUST FOR YOU: Think of how your life has changed since you became a Christian. Spend time in prayer thanking God that He gave you new life. Ask God to help the students come to know Him too so they can also celebrate their new lives.

Materials Needed: construction paper, markers, crayons, stickers, ribbons, safety scissors, glue, other craft supplies as needed

1. GETTING STARTED: Set out the supplies for each child to create an Easter card. Be sure that each student has enough to successfully create the card. Greet the students as they enter. When everyone is seated, begin the class with prayer, and sing the hymn together.2. JUMP START: Share a personal story about something that surprised you, like a surprise birthday party. Explain that today’s lesson is about Jesus’ resurrection. Before Jesus died, He had told His followers that He would return, but they did not understand. When Jesus rose from the grave, His followers were astounded. 3. THE LESSON STORY: Read today’s Scripture passage and lesson to the class. Talk about why Jesus’ followers were surprised to see Him. Explain that Jesus’ resurrection showed them that He had power over sin and death. Jesus proved to them that He was not just a prophet,

but the Son of God! Like the women at the tomb, we should go out and tell others about this story. Encourage the students to make an Easter card with the supplies for a friend or a family member. Tell them that the card must have something to do with Jesus’ resurrection. Challenge your stu-dents to share the Easter story with the people who receive the cards.4. TAKING IT HOME: Give the students time to complete the activity in their books. Review the lesson and key verse. Ask if anyone has a prayer request. End the class with prayer and pray for the requests. 5. ENERGY TO EDUCATE: Spend time in prayer for your students. Ask God to help them understand the meaning of Easter and to help you have a deeper knowledge of it.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • SUGGESTED TEACHING PLAN FOR ADVENTURERS WITH JESUS

Materials Needed: costumes, props, writing utensils

1. BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Set up the props and costumes so they can be used when ready. Greet the students as they enter the classroom. When everyone is seated, begin the class with prayer, and sing the hymn together.2. ’NET CHECK: Discuss the activity from www.rhboyd.com, and give the students time to complete the ’Net Check and the Bible Quiz. Discuss the answers together. 3. INTRODUCTION: Ask the students if they have been surprised by a movie’s or a book’s ending. Encourage the students to explain why the ending was surprising. If time allows, share a similar experience you’ve had. Explain that today’s lesson is about Jesus’ resurrection and that it was a “surprise ending” for Jesus’ followers. 4. TODAY’S LESSON STORY: Have volunteers read today’s Scripture passage and lesson. Share that some passages from the Old Testament foretold Jesus’ resurrection. Explain that the Scriptures foretold that Jesus would be resurrected, but Jesus’ followers didn’t understand. Once Jesus rose from the grave and appeared to them, they understood what the Scriptures were saying. When Jesus was walking with the two on the Emmaus Road, they did not recognize Him. However, Jesus allowed them to recognize who He was so that they would understand what He had been saying was true. The passage says that their eyes were opened and they understood. Now, have a few volunteers use the costumes and props to act out the scene of the women telling the other disciples that Jesus was not in the tomb. When the scene ends, ask the class what they learned. If they have understood the lesson, allow them to act out the scene in a silly or funny way.5. LESSON REVIEW: Review the lesson again and the key verse, and tell the students to ask any questions they may have. If time allows, ask them review questions about the lesson.6. CLOSING: Ask the students if they have any prayer requests. End the class in prayer, making sure to pray for the requests.
