Summer  Club  News    Urban  Youth  Farm  Club:  Thirty-‐eight  teens  from  Essex/Hudson  County  participated  in  the  Urban  Youth  Farm  Club  program  this  summer.  Youth  partnered  with  4-‐H  volunteers  to  help  maintain  local  community  gardens  while  learning  to  grow  food,  utilize  sustainable  practices  that  inspire  a  great  respect  for  the  natural  environment.  Partners  include  the  Rutgers  VETS,  Harsimus  Cemetery,  Pershing  Field,  Montclair  Community  Farms,  and  Essex  County  Parks.                      Young  Gardeners:  Members  began  preparing  the  soil  in  June,  and  by  the  end  of  June  our  seeds  were  planted.  They  have  been  enjoying  our  tomatoes  by  making  pizza,  and  we  had  lots  of  cucumber  snacks  along  with  yellow  beans.  We  have  a  pumpkin  squash  on  its  way.  Our  garden  fence  has  some  really  nice  bird  house  gourds  that  we  will  make  into  bird  houses.  We  will  be  making  our  scarecrow  soon,  and  it  will  be  ready  for  the  Halloween  Walk  for  all  to  see.  Two  of  our  members,  Brittany  and  Gregory  volunteered  with  the  ECEV  for  a  few  weeks  as  camp  counselors  during  the  summer.    Some  of  our  members  took  long  vacations  and  had  lots  of  fun  experiences.  Now  that  school  is  back  in  session,  we  will  all  be  together  again  in  our  garden.  It  has  been  a  wonderful  gardening  season  for  all  of  us.

Welcome  to  the  2016-‐7017  New  Year!  4-‐H  staff  and  volunteers  have  been  busy  helping  to  connect  youth  to  our  agricultural  roots.  Our  summer  was  full  of  planting,  soil  exploration,  and  harvest  with  dozens  of  youth  and  adult  volunteers  contributing  over  1000  hours  of  service  to  our  4-‐H  clubs,  after-‐school  enrichment,  and  the  Urban  Youth  Farm  Project.  Thank  you  to  4-‐H  Leader,  Jane  Kinkle,  for  putting  together  our  first  Essex-‐Hudson  4-‐H  newsletter.  This  issue  highlights  our  summer  adventures  and  includes  updates  about  ways  for  youth  and  families  to  get  involved  with  4-‐H  projects  in  science,  healthy  living  and  citizenship.

Remember, 4-H is for Everyone, Everywhere The 4-H Youth Development Program is part of Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Essex and Hudson Counties. 4-H educational programs are offered to all youth, grades K-13, on an age appropriate basis, without regard to race, color, sex, national origin, or disability. 4-H Mission Statement: The Rutgers Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program uses a learn by doing approach to enable youth to develop the knowledge, attitudes, and skills they need to become competent, caring and contributing citizens of the world.
