The main characteristic of Shorinji Kempo, as shown by the ancient murals in the Shaolin Temple, is the practicing of the various techniques in pairs. In practicing Shorinji Kempo as a means of self-defense, or even as a way to improve one’s health, it is necessary to have a partner with whom to practice. If one seeks to master ShorinjiKempo as Budo – a means by which to dispel violence and bring order – it is imperative to consider an opponent who might use any sort of attack. The greatest distinguishing feature of Shorinji Kempo is its use of pair work in ‘Hokei Kumi Embu’ as a means of developing character, enjoying both your own and your partner’s progress, and as a way to enjoy practice while progressing towards the realization of spiritual goal that cannot be realized by martial arts or sports which strive only to defeat others.

By considering these examples and by following the teachings of the many teachers and masters before us, we should be sure that Shorinji Kempo does not deteriorate into a sport or martial art blinded by the fleeting glitter of winning. Instead, we must work towards an art one step higher.

Budo for Self Development

Three Virtues

Shorinji Kempo combines the

study of self defense with

that of physical and mental

culture.

The method to do this is

based on three virtues – self

defense, self development

and improved health.

Through Shorinji Kempo, it is

possible to help create

people who have confidence

and courage with unified

minds and bodies as strong

as a diamond.

People should be attempting to develop themselves as humans rather than trying to become

like a lion or tiger; as humans don’t need animal instincts.

Considering Budo’s teachings, we can easily understand that it is not an offensive combat system by nature, but rather a way to control aggression without bowing down. People should be attempting to develop themselves as humans rather than trying to become like a lion or tiger; as humans don’t need animal instincts. Man has finely developed instincts and should learn how to use these. Rather than going ape, we should aim at discarding save instincts which cling to the human spirit, rising above them, remembering man’s ability to reason.

Arahan no Ken

Developing Love and Strength

Bodhi Dharma brought Arahan no Ken from India to China. In china, this ancient art of India is known as the Northern Giwamonken School. The essence of which is quite different from the aims of most other martial arts in that its purpose does not lie in defeating an opponent, but rather in learning to overcome yourself while mastering control over your body and mind. In the practice of this art, one should enjoy the techniques while helping the progress of one’s comrades. The method to do this is based on three virtues – self defense, self development and improved health.

The discipline of Kongo school of Zen is based on ‘Ken-Zen Ichinyo’ and ‘Riki-Ai funi’. That is, Shorinji Kempo as a discipline deems it essential to develop mind and body equally, with the development of love and strength.

Modern Man

Modern man lives in such a complex capitalist society that has made him almost accept only the strong should survive, while the weak are left to perish. This has also made us believe that in order to succeed we must strive for success, even at the expense of others. To overcome this way of thinking a new approach was necessary, as no amount of talking on the subject could influence people’s minds. Shorinji Kempo was the new approach, which is meant to resolve the problem of Modern man.
