Formal education tends to restrain our mind and spiritrather than set them free.

The mind and spirit are important in both individual and socialconte!t. If our mind and soul are free, we can live our lives withmore meaning and purpose. A free mind and soul can result frommany things, such as having the freedom to choose and practiceone%s beliefs, having access to the correct information andknowledge, and also having the freedom to chase one%s dreams.)ince formal education a&ects these abilities in di&erent ways, Ibelieve that it does restrain our mind and spirit to a certain e!tent.

The common belief today is that the role of formal education is toenrich the mind of people. )ince formal education is the meansthrough which sub(ects are introduced, and the ideas and issuesthat education, especially primary education, include are diverse, itis believed that formal education allows a person to broaden theirperspective. To illustrate, a person with basic education will have

some idea about mathematics, the comple!ity of language, thelessons from history, and some general science. On the other hand, since an illiterate person is mostly ignorant about these issues, itcan be argued that the worldview of the educated person isbroader. *et, it is a di&erent matter altogether for a person%s mindand spirit to be free. An illiterate person can have an e!tremelyfree mind and spirit, since it is not a result of formal education.

That being said, the question arises as to what the purpose offormal education is. Is it to free the mind and spirit, or is it toprovide knowledge and skills+ In my opinion, formal education

e!ists to provide necessary knowledge and skills, and it can bequestioned if formal education does actually actively restrain themind and spirit. It is possible that formal education and having afree mind and spirit are mutually e!clusive while one is used toattain knowledge, the other can also be attained e!ternally throughother activities.

There are, however, certain issues regarding formal education%sa&ect on the mind and soul. "irst of all, formal educatione!clusively promotes academics and completely ignores any

spiritual education or e!ercises. )ince formal education of childrenstart at a young age, children are heavily in-uenced by what is

taught at their schools, and as a result, they may start ignoringtheir mind and spirit as well. )imilarly, formal education is a formof indoctrination because children are programmed to believe whatis taught in the school curriculum is the absolute truth. Todemonstrate, specic countries may allow only a certain version of

history to be taught in their schools, since that version is the mostfavourable towards the country%s agenda. If we believe that onlytruth can free the mind and soul, then in some situations formaleducation may act as a barrier.

$esides, the system that formal education uses to (udge betweenindividual students is deeply -awed. It designs a particular type oftest, which tests memory rather than how much an individual haslearnt, and (udges all individuals on that particular type of test. If you do well in that test you are deemed to be intelligent, andotherwise you are not. That is an incorrect way to test theintelligence or learning capacity of a person, because eachindividual is intelligent in a di&erent way and also has di&erentcapacity of learning. It is like (udging an elephant, a ebra, and amonkey on their ability to climb a tree. /learly, such a test isbiased. Additionally, other things apart from education could be thecatalyst for setting an individual%s mind and spirit free. Anindividual%s calling could lie in travelling, cooking, or any otheractivity. Thus, using a biased testing system to tell a childrepeatedly that he or she is a bad student could a&ect their mentaland spiritual ability.
