PTSA President’s Message

Welcome to our returning Esperanza families and to those of you who are new to our school. You truly are at a wonderful school with fantastic teachers, administrators, student leaders and numerous opportunities for your student to get involved! The Es-peranza PTSA welcomes you to another year filled with many enriching events for both you and your students. Our year started off with a bang, organizing “Taking Care of Business” week, our chair Kristina Peterson and PTSA student Emily Deiters did a wonderful job. We were delighted to meet Freshman parents at our early morning get together on August 18th and hopefully were able to answer many questions in regards to their students new life in high school. In addition we welcomed back our teachers with a Back to School luncheon. Thank you to our hospitality chair Tina Cruz and PTSA student Magan Tran for hosting this event! They worked tirelessly to make sure that appreciation was shown to our faculty members and staff. In addition many thanks to all PTSA students who made themselves available to help out at this event. We are excited about several other upcoming PTSA sponsored events and activities that include:

Aztec University This is a series of parent education evenings, each with a different topic, that help parents navigate the road from high school to college. Chair Lisa Howard has worked very diligently with our EHS administration staff and counselors to bring these valuable evenings/programs to our Aztec families. Information about our series can be found on the Esperanza website! Our first program is an informational meeting about Financial Aid on November 2nd. With the partnership of Princeton University, a mock SAT/ACT was offered on September 24 in the EHS library. The results from this test will be made available at in an informative evening on October 12. Additional mock SAT/ACT test will be offered on February 11 and all students are invite to take the test for a nominal fee of $25.

PTSA Student of the Month Program: Heather Pawlak is the chair for this wonderful program that recognizes exemplary behavior and/or other positive contribution in student’s classes. Each month, our EHS teachers select students they want to honor. The teacher then distributes a certificate and a letter from Dr. Fox to the nominated student in class. What a great and positive way to recognize students that are succeeding at our school! We thank all of you who have supported PTSA by becoming members. The PTSA is the only parent group on cam-pus who works for the benefit of ALL students at Esperanza. If you have not already joined the PTSA, please consider doing so. Our membership dues of $16.00 are our primary fundraiser and enable us to provide activities like those listed above as well as many others that help our total student body. Last year the PTSA paid for schol-arships, leadership training, staff appreciation events, academic awards night, creative awards nights and many other events. If you would like to join, please contact our membership chair Kristina Peterson at [email protected] or stop by the front office for a membership envelope. Finally we have several fundraisers organized for the upcoming month and we are looking for the support of all students and their families: Wednesday September 28th : We had a successful dine out night at Panera Bread in Anaheim Hills from 4:00pm to 8:00pm… Organized by PTSA students Carissa Stewart and Lauren Kittredge Saturday October 8th: Rummage sales … we are looking for donations! Please contact Nadine Miller at [email protected] if you have anything that you are looking to give away… we can pick up if necessary! Looking forward to a great year! Esperanza High School, principal, Dr. Fox, and his administration designed the Distinguished Scholar Program, a one-of-a kind program in the district founded at Esperanza. This program-rich in AP rigor-is designed for the most academic student-meant to challenge the best students and to prepare them for the university. Scholars in grades 9-12 are treated to a luncheon and combine with the Distinguished Aztecs Academic Recognition program to be recognized for their work and dedication. Seniors wear distinct colored gowns at graduation to draw attention to this great feat. The Distinguished Aztecs Academic Recognition (DAAR), sponsored by the Esperanza PTSA is a ceremony to honor students carrying a 4.0 or better. The Distinguished Aztecs Academic Recognition is a program that was established by the PTSA of Esperanza to recognize the top scholars of the year. Each spring, the administration submits names of honorees to the PTSA. The criteria used for selection is based on a 4.0 or better grade point average or weighted 4.0 grade point average for those involved in honors or AP (Advanced Placement) classes. Seniors were celebrated based on their cumulative grade point average for their three and a half years at Esperanza. It is very exciting to hear about the accomplishments of the seniors and the universities and colleges that they have chosen. California Scholastic Federation-The purpose of the California Scholarship Federation is to foster high standards of scholarship, service, and citizenship on the part of the students of Esperanza High School and to promote appropriate activities among its members. To qualify, students must earn 10 points from a variety of college prep classes. Students must participate in 100 service hours to wear a stole at graduation. Sealbearers are CSF members for four semesters based on grades earned in the tenth through twelfth grades. Students can apply first semester of their freshmen year. Collegiate Scholars (a distr ict honor)-The purpose of the Collegiate Scholar Program is to prepare academically talented and motivated students for admission to a four-year university program. Enrollment in the program is based upon criteria which include scores among the top 15% of students in the nation on the STAR Tests, an overall, unweighted, cumulative (9-12), academic GPA of 3.50 and to have completed at least 8 honors/AP courses. This group represents the top 7% of the students in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District. Students can apply in September of their freshmen year based upon 8th grade GPA. National Honor Society-The function of the National Honor Society is to develop character, scholarship, service, and leadership in students to promote lifelong learning and community involvement. Enrollment in the program is based upon maintaining a 3.50 unweighted GPA and completion of 32 hours of designated community service. Students can apply their freshmen year. Student of the Month-All students are eligible to be selected by each teacher each month for outstanding academic work, outstanding behavior, or outstanding contributions to the classroom. Community Events for October

PTSA STUDENTS PTSA is off to a great start so far this year. The students are working hard to

increase student membership and to make an impact in the school and community.

Over the summer, PTSA chairmen helped get the school ready for the upcom-

ing school year. Chairmen helped clean classrooms for teachers and help at the

Staff Luncheon. They also helped build their leadership skills at Leadership Acade-

my at Chapman University and at Leadership Day.

Over the last month, the students have been preparing for the general meet-

ing on October 3rd after school in the little theater. At lunch this past week, students

advertised PTSA and were able to gain many more signups for the club. The first

restaurant night was also this week at Panera Bread and it was a success!
