How the ESP-SMT System Works 2 Key Concepts:
1. Evapotranspiration – Plant Water Need Based on Changing Weather Conditions
2. Maximum Allowed Depletion (MAD) – Proven Method of Irrigation Scheduling

Evaporation

Transpiration is the process by which plants return water to the atmosphere. After absorbing water from the ground, plants release water through their leaves. Transpiration helps plants stay cool, in the same way perspiration keeps humans and animals cool.
Plant Transpiration

Loss of water from vegetation though the combined processes of soil evaporation and plant transpiration

Maximum % of Plant Available Water (PAW) taken out of soil before irrigating– % removed; NOT % remaining
MAD provides a safety buffer– Broken mains– Controller downtime– Weather variations
Varies by soil type – MAD Ranges from 35% to 50%

How the System Works…
Rain Bird ESP-SMT Smart Modular Control System
Step 1. User sets CURRENT DATE & TIME to serve as a reference point
Rain Bird ESP-SMT Smart Modular Control System
Step 2a - User enters site location information (by zip code or custom entry)
– Zip code Identifies the latitude & elevation of the site – used to estimate
solar radiation
– Extracts zip code specific monthly historical humidity and monthly wind speed values stored in the ESP-SMT controller memory

Step 2b - User enters allowed water days and times (water windows) to meet local water restrictions (if any)
Set allowed water days Set allowed water windows
– Up to 2 separate water windows for weather–based scheduling
– “Grow-in” water window

Step 3 - User enters zone - specific parameters for “active” zones» 3 methods to enter zone-specific information

Step 3a - User enters Sprinkler Type per zone (or) enters “Custom values” (sprinkler precipitation rate and efficiency)
