This remarkable initiative, the result of the passion and professionalism of a Chilean family and its love for the hors-es, the countryside and its customs has enabled thousands of Chileans and foreigners to become better acquainted with the nobility and beauty of our traditions and values, those deeply rooted in the soul of our nation.

In each of its elegant and innovative appearances, this group of highly skilled “huasos”, riders and dancers delight us with beautiful dances and allegories. They have become

Esta hermosa iniciativa, que es fruto de la pasión y profesionalismo de una familia chilena y su amor por los caballos, el campo y sus costumbres, ha permitido a miles de chilenos y extranjeros conocer un poco más la nobleza y belleza de nuestras tradiciones y valores, aquellas que se encuentran enraizadas en lo profundo del alma nacional.

Los caballos llegaron a América en el segundo via-je de Cristóbal Colón, arribando a la isla La Española en 1493. Desde allí se difundirán con gran vitalidad por todo el continente americano y participarán en incontables ex-pediciones y hazañas de aquel período histórico.

A Chile llegó el caballo en 1540, cuando don Pedro de Valdivia trajo consigo 75 ejemplares entre potros y yeguas desde el Perú. Menos de una década después la masa ca-ballar alcanzaba ya los 500 animales, reforzados con 42 reproductores seleccionados, propiedad del gobernador García Hurtado de Mendoza. Tal fue la base originaria del caballo chileno.

La afición por los equinos se difundió en el suelo nacional y todos, fueran españoles, indios o mestizos, le tomaron gusto a los juegos de destreza. El citado go-bernador Hurtado de Mendoza ordenó reunir el ganado santiaguino en la Plaza de Armas cada 24 y 25 de Julio, para su marca y selección. Este rodeo se hizo obligatorio, exigiéndose que el traslado de los rebaños a los corrales se efectuara con caballos especialmente adiestrados, sin más ayuda, lo que daba ocasión a los jinetes para demos-trar su habilidad. En el siglo XVII este rodeo comenzó a reglamentarse, modificándose los escenarios hasta que finalmente quedó establecida la “medialuna”, en 1860. En 1927 se dictó la ley para regir las “corridas en vaca”, y por fin en 1962 el Rodeo fue declarado el deporte nacional.

Hoy día existen en Chile más de 7 mil criaderos de ca-ballos chilenos de la más variada envergadura, lo que sigue demostrando el cariño por esta noble raza, conservada in-tacta por más de cuatro siglos gracias a la dedicación, la lucidez y el esmero de los criadores, entre ellos el Criadero Palmas de Peñaflor.

Horses were brought to America by Christopher Co-lumbus in his second voyage, when he disembarked in the island he named La Española (Hispaniola). From there they spread with great vitality all over the Americas, where they took part in countless expeditions and feats of that period of history.

The horse was introduced to Chile in 1540, when Pedro de Valdivia brought 75 specimens with him from Peru, in-cluding stallions and mares. Less than a decade later, the equine stock amounted to 500 heads strengthened by 42 selected animals property of Governor García Hurtado de Mendoza: the Chilean horse was born.

Interest in horses spread quickly all over the country and many, whether Spaniard, native or of mixed race be-came keen on games of skill. Governor Hurtado de Mendo-za ordered the rounding up of Santiago’s livestock in the Plaza de Armas, every 24th and 25th of July, for its branding and selection. Eventually this “rodeo” became compulsory, requiring in addition that the rounding up to the corrals be done with specially trained horses, with no extra help, which gave the riders the opportunity to prove their skill. Regulations for the rodeo were introduced In the 17th cen-tury while the arenas underwent changes until 1860, when the “media luna” (a round arena specially designed) was established. In 1927 a law was passed to regulate the so called “cow round-ups” and, finally, in 1962 the Rodeo was declared the national sport.

There are today in Chile more than seven thousands stud farms of Chilean horses, of all sizes, proving the wide-spread fondness for this noble race kept intact for more than four centuries thanks to the devotion, clarity and care of the breeders, amongst them, Palmas de Peñaflor Stud Farm.

Caballos que le bailan a Chile

La habilidad y docilidad de nuestros caballos produ-cen una amplia sensación de armonía, como puede verse en la página anterior. El debido adiestramiento de estas cualidades obtiene de las monturas una superior catego-ría, donde la fuerza se equilibra con la delicadeza y origi-nan juntas la elegancia. Así bailan los caballos.

El Criadero Palmas de Peñaflor ha creado un espectá-culo coreográfico inspirado en las tradiciones y danzas de nuestra tierra, en el cual la habilidad de potros y jinetes desempeña un gran rol. Grupos de bailarines ataviados con trajes típicos o alegóricos recrean diversas escenas significativas de nuestra historia y tradiciones, y en ese despliegue las cabalgaduras exhiben toda su gracia y ga-llardía, acompañando los movimientos e interviniendo en la danza misma.

Bajo un sabio y dedicado entrenamiento, perfeccio-nado durante generaciones, el caballo pasa del simple galope a una galería de movimientos que construyen un baile. Así, las capacidades inherentes a cada animal salen a relucir, contribuyendo a un espectáculo conjunto que admira a quien pueda contemplarlo con detenimiento.

El baile que más nos identifica, la cueca, cobra nueva dimensión cuando son dos jinetes quienes realizan los gi-ros y ondean los pañuelos, trayendo a escena la aureola legendaria del mundo ecuestre.

Horses that dance to Chile

As can be seen in the photographs on the previous page, our horses’ ability and docile nature combine in harmony. The proper training of these qualities enable the horses to reach another level, where strength balances with delicacy and turns into elegance. This is how the horses dance.

The Palmas de Peñaflor Stud Farm has created a cho-reographed show inspired by the traditions and dances of our land, in which the skill of both horse and rider plays a brilliant role. Groups of dancers dressed in traditional or al-legorical costumes recreate different typical scenes of our history and traditions. In this display, the horses exhibit all their grace and gallantry, accompanying the movements and taking part in the dance.

With a expert and dedicated training, perfected over generations, the horse goes from a simple gallop to a myri-ad of movements that make up a dance. The natural talents of each animal are shown off in order to enhance the show and captivate the audience.

The dance that most identifies us, the “cueca”, reach-es a new dimension when two riders, executing the turns while waving their handkerchiefs, do so on horseback.

La cueca

La cultura del español y la del indígena se hermanan suscitando un colorido abanico de tradiciones a través del tiempo. Estrechamente unida a la figura del huaso, la cueca es un símbolo inconfundible de nuestra identidad, que nos une de norte a sur. En las presentaciones de la Escuadra Ecuestre Palmas de Peñaflor la danza nacional siempre está presente.

Over time the Spanish and indigenous cultures have intertwined to create a colourful array of traditions. Close-ly linked to the figure of the “huaso”, our traditional coun-tryside horseman, the “cueca” is the unmistakable sym-bol of our identity which unites us from north to south. Our national dance is always a part of Palmas de Peñaflor Equestrian Squad performances.

La Isla de Pascua, descubierta en 1722 y anexada a Chile en 1888, ha sido reconocida como una de las gran-des maravillas de la Humanidad. Está llena de ricas expre-siones culturales como la danza tradicional Cai-Cai, que también bailan nuestros caballos.

Easter Island, discovered in 1722 and part of Chile since 1888, has been acknowledged as one of the greatest won-ders of mankind. It is full of rich cultural expressions such as the traditional dance Cai-Cai, that our horses also dance.

La Tirana, fe que florece en el desierto

A fines del siglo XIX y principios del XX, las fronteras de los países latinoamericanos terminan de definirse y Chile incorpora el desierto nortino, configurando el país tal como hoy lo conocemos. La mayor expresión de las costumbres religiosas altiplánicas, entre el desierto y al-tas cordilleras, se da en la fiesta religiosa de “La Tirana”, en la Región de Tarapacá, con sus bailes en homenaje a la Virgen.

La Tirana, faith that blooms in the desert

By the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century the borders of the Latin American coun-tries were finally settled and Chile incorporated the north-ern desert, thus shaping the country as we know it today. The religious festival “La Tirana” in the northern Tarapacá region highlights the religious customs of the Andean pla-teau. The participants pay homage to the Virgin by way of dance.

A unos 200 kilómetros de Santiago, en el corazón de la zona huasa, a orillas del río Claro en la región del Maule, una de las 15 regiones en las que Chile se divide, inmerso en la historia y rodeado de diversidad geográfica aluci-nante, se encuentra el Criadero Palmas de Peñaflor.

La comuna de Molina, ubicada entre el Océano Pa-cífico y la cordillera de los Andes, rodeada de viñas que producen algunos de los mejores vinos del país, es testi-go sereno de la crianza de un noble animal que primero conquistó y luego libertó a todo el continente americano.

La zona central es la zona del huaso por excelencia, cuya estampa se reconoce en todos los rincones agrí-colas del país. Mezcla de la vestimenta andaluza con los ponchos indígenas tamizados por el tiempo, los chaman-tos flamean al viento con sus vivos colores, resaltando al caballero y el caballo chileno en una armoniosa e impo-nente imagen.

Crianza, selección y entrenamiento de excelencia ha-cen posible caballos dóciles, veloces y valientes, lo cual junto a su calidad morfológica, componen el sello del Criadero Palmas de Peñaflor, que desde su fundación vie-ne dedicando sus mejores esfuerzos a la selección riguro-sa de las yeguas de crías y reproductores de excepción.

Rapidez y exactitud son la respuesta de nuestros ca-ballos a los requerimientos del jinete, ya sea en el depor-te, los bailes o las pruebas de destreza.

A partir del esfuerzo intenso y abnegado de prepa-radores expertos, Palmas de Peñaflor y sus jinetes dieron vida a una Escuadra Ecuestre que ha venido recreando con gran éxito la historia y tradiciones de Chile, llevándo-las a tierras nacionales y extranjeras.

The Palmas de Peñaflor Stud Farm lays some 120 miles south of Santiago, in the heart of the “huaso” zone, on the banks of the Rio Claro in the Maule region, one of the 15 regions in which Chile is divided. The farm is immersed in history and surrounded by an amazing geographic di-versity.

The district of Molina, located between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountains, surrounded by vine-yards where some of Chile’s best wines are produced, is a serene testimony of the breeding of a noble animal that first conquered and later liberated all America.

This central part of Chile is the “huaso” area par ex-cellence, whose figure can be seen in every corner of our countryside. A combination of Andalusian clothes and na-tive “ponchos” coloured over time, the “chamantos” flut-ter in the wind with their bright colours, highlighting the gallantry of the rider and his Chilean horse.

Breeding, selection and training of excellence result in docile, swift and brave horses. These features, together with their morphological quality, constitute the hallmark of Palmas de Peñaflor Stud Farm, which has been devot-ed since its foundation to the most strict selection of its mares and breeding stallions.

Speed and accuracy are the response of our horses to the requirements of the rider in sports, dances or skill tests.

Based on the intense and dedicated labor of highly skilled trainers, Palmas de Peñaflor and its riders give life to an Equestrian Squad which has been showcasing suc-cessfully the history and traditions of Chile, at home and abroad.

Criadero Palmas de Peñaflor, un día común. Cae la tarde y en tanto crece la penumbra, el sol se tiñe de dorado. Cerca de las caballerizas un grupo de personas intercambia impresiones en amena conversación. Los reflejos del ocaso parecen entretenerse también al en-contrar los colores de los chamantos. Los sombreros evocan su ancestro hispánico, pero aquí forman parte de una realidad nueva, desarrollada pacientemente a través de generaciones hasta alcanzar un nivel de exce-lencia, fundado en la originalidad, en el amor a la tierra, en la tradición que incluye a grandes y pequeños en una sola identidad nacional.

A typical day at Palmas de Peñaflor Stud Farm. The afternoon slowly fades into a golden hue, while casting its first shadows over the countryside. Near the stables, a few people are chatting amicably over the day’s events while the sunset lights play with the colors of their “cha-mantos”, the typical short colourful embroidered poncho. Their hats cannot hide their hispanic ancestry, but here they are part of a new reality, slowly acquired over genera-tions. Through this process they have achieved their own level of excellence, based on originality and love for the land, in a tradition that includes adults and children in one national identity.

El caballo pasta a lo lejos, formando una escena que parece salida de la imaginación de un artista. El campo chileno es la apacible cuna de riquezas innumerables del alma nacional.

Para los criterios actuales resulta difícil admitir que semejante tranquilidad sea tan fecunda y expresiva, pero justamente en esa serenidad, que sabe de abnegaciones y no de amarguras, reside la fuerza profunda de la cual brota nuestra forma de ser.

As if from an artist’s easel, a horse grazes in the dis-tance. It is the Chilean countryside, gentle cradle of count-less riches of the national soul.

In today’s world, it is difficult to admit that such quiet-ness can be so fruitful. However it is precisely from within this serenity that the profound strenght of our national identity springs.

La Escuadra Ecuestre Palmas de Peñaflor, más que un equipo, parece una sola alma en varios cuerpos. La reconocible impronta del campo chileno que emana des-de su primera presentación en las canchas nos remonta fácilmente a un concepto más amplio e inclusivo, que a todos nos alcanza de una u otra manera: el Alma de Chile. Hay algo inconfundiblemente chileno, atemporal y pro-fundamente chileno en estos jinetes.

The Palmas de Peñaflor Equestrian Squad is more than a team, it is one spirit embodied in several riders. This rec-ognizable stamp of the Chilean countryside, which was pre-sent from their first performances, brings to mind a broad-er and more inclusive concept and one which reaches us all one way or another – the Soul of Chile. There is something unmistakably Chilean, timelessly and profoundly Chilean in this group of riders.

El sol cae sobre la galería de las pesebreras, ennobleciendo la rusticidad de los materiales. Tras esas puertas están los caballos que han sido aplaudidos en innumerables certámenes, como también los potros más jóvenes que han ido ganando su espacio en el corazón de la Escuadra. Cada uno de ellos tiene su nombre, y lo reconoce cuando el encargado de alimentarlos visita cada pesebrera, saludándoles y obsequiándoles alguna caricia.

The sun shines over the stables, enhancing the quality of the natural materials. Behind these doors rest the horses that have been applauded in countless competitions, as well as the younger animals that are starting to earn a place in the heart of the Squad. Each one of them has a name, which they recognize when the stableboy comes to feed them, greeting and patting them affectionately.

El criadero Palmas de Peñaflor rinde homenaje a un es-tilo de vida, una forma de ser arraigada en nuestro campo. Esparcida en las diferentes faenas del día, discretamente presente detrás de cada detalle en lo profundo de los va-lles, esa forma de ser adquiere un súbito poder de convo-catoria en la figura del huaso, con sus aperos y traje típico.

La Escuadra Ecuestra Palmas de Peñaflor obtiene de esta raíz campesina lo mejor de su atractivo, y hasta el vir-tuosismo con que sus hombres manejan las riendas en la cancha no agrada tanto como verlos aparecer juntos, ofre-ciendo una estampa que reúne el pasado con el futuro.

The Palmas de Peñaflor Stud Farm pays tribute to a lifestyle rooted in our countryside. Scattered throughout the everyday chores and discreetly present in every detail within the valleys, this way of life culminates in the power-ful form of the “huaso” in his traditional riding outfit.

The Palmas de Peñaflor Equestrian Squad takes the most appealing aspects of its rural origins and by doing so presents an image which combines the past and the future.

Escenas cotidianas rumbo a lo extraordinario

“Es cierto que la noble calidad de los caballos justifi-ca la demasiada afición que les tienen los naturales. Son admirables en la celeridad de la carrera, en el aguante del trabajo, en el brío de acometer en los riesgos, en el garbo del movimiento, en el coraje, en la docilidad y obediencia, y en la hermosura de la forma”.

Estas palabras fueron escritas hace más de quinientos años por el Padre Miguel de Olivares, historiador jesuita, dando cuenta del apego de los criollos –el mestizaje entre españoles e indios– a los juegos ecuestres y su gusto por destacar la calidad y la hermosura de sus caballos.

Con don Pedro de Valdivia llegó al país un fraile domi-nico llamado Rodrigo González Marmolejo, quien sería el primero en establecer un criadero en los sectores de Meli-pilla y Quillota para la raza equina traída por los conquista-dores. Desde entonces se mantuvo la costumbre de dirigir personalmente cada hacendado la reproducción de sus animales. Esta forma de crianza permitió que las caracte-rísticas distintivas del caballo perduraran intactas por más de 400 años, a diferencia de lo ocurrido en otras latitudes.

Así nuestro caballo, que llegó conquistador, como con-quistador se ha quedado. Asomémonos a la vida de este compañero fiel de nuestra historia, en Palmas de Peñaflor.

These words were written more than 500 years ago by Father Miguel de Olivares, a Jesuit historian, describing the attachment of the “criollos” (native Americans) to eques-trian games and their pleasure in praising the quality and beauty of their horses.

The Dominican friar Rodrigo González Marmolejo, who arrived in the country with Don Pedro de Valdivia, was the first to establish a stud farm in the areas of Melipilla and Quillota for the horses brought by the “conquistado-res”. Since then, each landowner has kept up the custom of personally managing the breeding. In contrast to what happened in other places, this manner of breeding made it possible, for over 400 years, to keep intact the distinctive characteristics of the horse.

Thus our horse, which arrived as a conqueror, has re-mained a conqueror. Let us take a look at the life of this faithful companion in our history, in Palmas de Peñaflor.

On this page and the preceding ones, the foals come into the world and, shortly after, begin to trot, unknowingly renewing a lineage of docile and firm, intelligent and marvellous “corraleros”–the name given to the Chilean horse trained for the rodeo–, which is also the oldest certified equine race in America (Register of the Chilean Horse, 1893).

La estampida gira en torno al adiestrador como un remolino de cascos y crines, mientras el lazo traza sus cír-culos esperando el gesto que lo lanzará hasta el potrillo elegido entre los demás.

A medida que el joven animal vaya creciendo, atravesa-rá distintas etapas hasta familiarizarse con su jinete, con los aperos, aprender los movimientos que requiere la medialu-na, y desarrollar las cualidades que lo harán admirable.

Poco a poco el jinete va habituando al animal a su presencia, a los aperos y a su propio peso. Poco a poco también se desarrolla el proceso de domesticación y aprendizaje, que a su manera tiene mucho de ritual. De la mutua confianza entre el hombre y el animal va a de-pender el grado de habilidad que puedan conseguir en las rigurosas pruebas del rodeo o de las exhibiciones a que más adelante se verán sometidos.

La silla de montar chilena, con su forma y elementos característicos, es acomodada en los firmes lomos del ca-ballo para volverse una parte más de su cuerpo.

The stampede spins around the trainer in a whirl of hooves and manes, while the lasso makes its own loops, waiting for the movement that will cast it at the chosen colt.

As the young animal grows, it will go through different training stages to get to know its rider, to learn the move-ments required by the “medialuna”, until it develops the qualities that will make it admirable.

Little by little the rider gets the animal used to his presence, the tack and his weight. The same applies for the taming and training process, which is much like a ritual. The level of skill achieved in the rigorous tests of the rodeo or of the exhibitions which they will eventually face, will depend on the mutual trust between man and horse.

The Chilean saddle, with its characteristic elements and shape, is adjusted on the horse’s strong back, and be-comes part of his body.

If Chilean identity could assume a physical form, it would certainly be that of a man on horseback. Very few other typical icons of our country, if any, have such deep down history, so much vitality and so much projection as the world that pivots around this emblematic figure.

Poco a poco el caballo aprende nuevas formas de trote, de galope, cambios de ritmo, cruces de patas, giros, galopes o frenadas súbitas, al mismo tiempo que crece la conexión entre el jinete y su cabalgadura. Presenciar las prácticas es un verdadero regalo para quien se sienta a admirarlas.

Gradually, the horse learns new ways of trotting, galloping, changes in rhythm, crossing hooves, turns, fast gallops and sudden stops. During this process the connection between the rider and his horse continues to grow. Witnessing these practices is a real treat to those who have the opportunity to see them.

El Rodeo, el deporte nacional chileno, es una ver-sión más elaborada y competitiva del antiguo “corraleo”, cuando el ganado era llevado de los pastos a los corrales por expertos jinetes, que no se valían de otra ayuda más que su habilidad para esta faena. Como dijimos anterior-mente, en tiempos coloniales existía la ordenanza de reu-nir el ganado de Santiago en la Plaza de Armas para su marca y selección, momentos en que se lucía el adiestra-miento de los caballos.

Durante los siglos siguientes esta actividad comenzó a reglamentarse. La pista donde se separaba el ganado tomó forma rectangular, y en ella los jinetes debían apar-tar su ganado y conducirlo, ganando grandes honores los que sabían hacerlo mejor.

A mediados del siglo XIX, el corral adoptó la forma de circunferencia, con un apiñadero en su interior desde donde se sacaba el ganado, y después aparecieron las quinchas para las atajadas.

Hoy el Rodeo Chileno es un deporte federado, sien-do uno de los que gozan de más convocatoria y el que concentra todo un mundo de tradiciones. Los colores, los movimientos, los aromas del campo, el ambiente mismo están impregnados con siglos de historia que resaltan su autenticidad.

The Rodeo, the Chilean national sport, is a more elabo-rate and competitive version of the old “corraleo,” when livestock was rounded up from the grazing pastures to the corrals by expert riders who needed no other help than their skill for the task. As mentioned earlier, there was an ordinance in colonial times to round up Santiago’s livestock in the Plaza de Armas for marking and selection, at the time when the training of horses could be showcased.

Over the next centuries this activity began to be regu-lated. The arena where the cattle were separated took on a rectangular shape. In it, the riders had to separate and drive their livestock, and those who did it best were distin-guished with great honors.

In the mid-19th century the corral took the shape of a circle. The cattle were taken from the “apiñadero” (hud-dle) that was placed in its interior. Later on, the “quinchas” (two reed and adobe walls) were attached to its fences for the riders to stop the bulls against them in the “atajada”.

Today, the Chilean Rodeo is a federated sport, which draws large crowds and which best brings together a world of tradition, where the aromas, colours, movements and atmosphere are filled with centuries of history, that high-light its true origins.

El concepto de la Escuadra Ecuestre está profunda-mente enraizado en los valores de nuestra tierra, sin duda, pero no por eso queda confinada a nuestros límites geo-gráficos. Por el contrario, la Escuadra se ha convertido en un embajador cultural que muestra Chile al mundo y a quienes nos visitan.

Los pabellones llevados por los jinetes traen a la me-moria las gestas de antaño, cuando en cada país hubo hé-roes montados que se sacrificaron por esas mismas ban-deras, y dieron a cada nación motivos de legítimo orgullo. Tales evocaciones de un pasado admirable reviven con lozanía y vitalidad al galope de las cabalgaduras, conven-ciéndonos del promisorio futuro existente en los caminos de la Identidad, es decir, de la fidelidad de cada pueblo a sus rasgos propios.

Ese es el trasfondo de las ocasiones en que el Cria-dero Palmas de Peñaflor se ha convertido en “embajada informal” de nuestro país y en excelente anfitrión para recibir a quienes nos visitan.

Undoubtedly, the vision that inspires the Equestrian Squad is deeply rooted in the values of our own land, al-though it does not confine itself to the geographic limits of Chile. Instead, the Squad has become a cultural ambassador that shows Chile to the world and to our country’s visitors.

As the flags held up by the riders flutter, heroic feats from past times come to mind when mounted heroes sacri-ficed themselves for their flag, and gave their nation reasons to be genuinely proud. Those recollections of an admirable past come back to life with youthful vigour, as the horses gal-lop and convince us of our promising future and, namely, the loyalty of each nation to its own characteristics.

This is the background of the occasions when Palmas de Peñaflor has been an “unofficial embassy” of our coun-try and an excellent host to welcome those who visit us.

Entre las delegaciones que han acompañado las pre-sentaciones de la Escuadra, la que viene del Perú siempre fascina por la armoniosa riqueza de sus expresiones cul-turales típicas, como son sus trajes y, muy particularmen-te, sus extraordinarios Caballos Peruanos de Paso, raza que comparte su origen con el caballo chileno. Si nuestro equino se caracteriza por su vigor y disposición a las duras faenas del campo –temple heredado de su ancestro gue-rrero–, el caballo peruano desarrolló a través del tiempo un grado superlativo de gracia en sus desplazamientos, dando a su trote un innato equilibrio que diluye en el jine-te toda sensación de sacudida.

Among the delegations that have shared the stage with the Squad, the Peruvian one always dazzles us with a rich blend of its cultural expression, whether with its cos-tumes or its extraordinary Caballos de Paso, a breed which comes from the same origin as our own Chilean horse.

If our horse is characterized by its vigour and aptitude for heavy farmwork (courage inherited from its warrior ancestor), the Peruvian horse has, over time, developed a superlative sense of gracefulness, giving its trot a natural balance which reduces the sensation of being shaken for the rider.

The Argentine Rural Fair is one of main events in the Latin American agriculture world, a true celebration of the living traditions linked to the land. It takes place in the dis-trict of Palermo, in the imposing fairgrounds of Buenos Aires, and brings together the finest exponents of live-stock, agriculture, handicraft and industry.

In July, during two weeks, thousands of people visit the Fair, which has been going for more than 100 years.

In this scenario, Palmas de Peñaflor showed the tradi-tions of our land, our typical dances, the spirit of our horses and the gallantry of their riders.

La Exposición Rural Argentina es uno de los grandes eventos del agro latinoamericano, una auténtica cele-bración de las tradiciones vivas asociadas a la tierra en la región. Realizada en el barrio de Palermo, dentro del im-ponente Predio Ferial de Buenos Aires, la muestra reúne a los mejores exponentes de la ganadería, agricultura, ar-tesanía e industria.

En Julio, durante dos semanas, miles de personas vi-sitan este evento, que tiene tras de sí una tradición cente-naria. En este escenario, la Escuadra Ecuestre Palmas de Pe-ñaflor, hizo lucir las tradiciones de nuestra tierra, sus bailes típicos, el brío de sus monturas y la gallardía de sus jinetes.

La tierra parece de pronto la superficie de un tam-bor redoblando: se aproxima una carga de jinetes con los pabellones de Chile y Colombia al viento, en honor a don Álvaro Uribe, presidente de Colombia. Venido de una tra-dicional familia ligada al campo, el mandatario supo apre-ciar las múltiples bellezas –y los valores que presuponen– de la Escuadra, de sus elementos humanos y materiales, y del modo de ser y de vivir que está en sus raíces.

Suddenly the earth trembles like a drumroll: a charge of riders approaches waving the flags of Chile and Colom-bia, in honour of Don Alvaro Uribe, President of Colombia. As a member of a traditional family with ties to the coun-tryside, the President was able to fully appreciate the many beauties –and the values implied– of the Squad, of its hu-man and material elements, and of its way of being and liv-ing which lies at its roots.

En Julio de 2010, Su Alteza Real Princesa Haya Bint Al Hussein, hija del rey Hussein de Jordania y Presidenta de la Federación Ecuestre Internacional, visitó nuestro país. Fue agasajada con un espectáculo de destrezas del caballo chile-no, con bailes y música, a cargo de la Escuadra del Criadero Palmas de Peñaflor. La presentación, especialmente cuida-da en todos sus aspectos, fue seguida con sumo interés por la noble visita.

Así, desfilaron frente a ella los recios jinetes en sus es-pléndidas monturas; la elegancia femenina en su traje par-ticular, demostrando ellas también un admirable dominio de su cabalgadura; los bailes de diversas zonas del país; los coches tradicionales, evocando escenas históricas, etc.

In July 2010, Her Royal Highness Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, daughter of King Hussein of Jordan and President of the International Equestrian Federation, visited our coun-try. She was the guest of honour at a show of prowess of the Chilean horse, with dances and music performed by the Palmas de Peñaflor Squad. The show, which was carefully prepared in every detail, was followed with great interest by the royal visitor.

In front of her paraded the robust riders on their splen-did mounts; the female riders in their elegant outfits, also showing an extraordinary control of their horses; dancers performing dances from different regions of the country; tra-ditional carriages reminiscent of historical scenes, and more.

The riders of the Eques-trian Squad unfurl the national flag while carrying out beautiful alignment changes at full gallop. They are accom-panied by the “Indian squad”, that has joined the Squad for some years now.

Con este elocuen-te momento se da inicio otra Semana de la Chilenidad, para dar a las tradiciones vivas de nuestro país un espacio donde manifestarse ante el público de la ciudad.

Es que el alma de Chile está ligada al campo, a sus tradiciones, a sus colores y aromas, a sus sabores y so-nidos, a sus leyendas y sus formas de ser, de pensar y de creer. En medio de las prisas de nuestro mundo globaliza-do, la Semana de la Chilenidad es un acto de fe en otros estilos, más adecuados a nuestra índole, y en las virtudes que nos identifican.

Expressing the spirit of a whole nation

The Chilean Equestrian Squad escorts the image of the Virgen del Carmen, carried on a platform by soldiers of the Army of which she is the patron saint. This eloquent moment marks the beginning of another “Semana de la Chilenidad” (Week of Chilean Identity), which brings our countryside tra-ditions to the city.

Chile’s soul is linked to the countryside, to its tradi-tions, colours, aromas, flavours, sounds, legends and its way of being, thinking and believing. Amidst the bustle of our globalized world, the Week of the Chilean Identity is an act of faith to other ways of living and to the virtues with which we can identify.

Durante esta semana se constituye una amalgama que entrega una visión completa de la nación, de su tra-dición que siempre se renueva y de su fascinante diversi-dad. Durante esos días es posible ver la obra de los artesa-nos, la destreza de los jinetes, la pujanza de los criadores, el mundo militar entrelazado con el mundo civil, el clima familiar y la amenidad que contagia el ambiente.

En este clima donde Chile es como el viento que hace flamear las banderas, la Escuadra Ecuestre Palmas de Pe-ñaflor encuentra las condiciones ideales para manifestar todo aquello que es su propia razón de ser: la Identidad nacional, el hombre a caballo que nos representa a todos y la habilidad sabia y pacientemente adquirida.

During this week many aspects are combined to deliver a complete vision of the nation, of its constant-ly renewed tradition and of its fascinating diversity. During these days it is possible to see the work of the craftsmen, the skills of the riders, the passion of the breeders, the military world interlaced with the civil world, the family atmosphere, and the friendship that engulfs us all.

In this atmosphere, where Chile is like the wind that flutters the flags, Palmas de Peñaflor Equestrian Squad finds the ideal conditions to show all of its own raison d’être: the national identity, the man on horseback who represents us all, and the skill aquired through patient perseverance.

La Semana de la Chilenidad pone en contacto al hombre común con los valores más arraigados del alma nacional. Valores que no se limitan a una palabra simpli-ficadora, sino que impregnan mil detalles característicos de nuestras tradiciones históricas, y que alimentan en cada chileno la noción de pertenencia a un lugar, a una forma de ser, a un estilo nacional.

Quizá ese sea uno de los grandes aportes de la Es-cuadra: dar forma visible a esas nociones que todos los chilenos llevan en su interior. Ver a los jinetes portando las banderas equivale a una afirmación de nuestro propio ser, elocuente como no podría serlo un mero texto.

The Week of the Chilean Identity puts in touch the common man with the most deep-rooted values of the na-tional soul. Values that go beyond a simple word and can be found in thousands of details that are characteristic of our historical traditions and which foster in every Chilean the notion of belonging to a place, to a way of being, to a national style.

This is perhaps one of the greatest contributions of the Equestrian Squad: to give a visible expression to these no-tions we carry within ourselves. To see the riders holding up the flags is like a categorical statement of our own being – so eloquent a gesture that words cannot explain.
