OverviewThe Macss 2014 start of year guide should hopefully hit campus during Academic Advice Day and O Week. It’s designed as a guide for fellow students (especially first years) on media education, university life and the wider media world.

The guide will contain a range of pieces. It might include everything from subject reviews to long academic rants to fun parody articles and artwork.

As mentioned previously, this content list contains some pieces we’d like to see in the guide but don’t have yet. If you’d like to do one of these pieces, just send us an email.

We're also taking pitches for writing and art. If you've got an idea for something you want to write or draw that isn’t on this list, send us an email – as soon as you can.

We can help you with your submission, proofread it and provide whatever support you need.

GuidelinesThere's no word limit for the guide – it's whatever you feel comfortable with. The article writers on committee are aiming for around 700 words. However, it's up to whatever suits you – anything from 50 words to 1500 words could work well.

Absolutely no experience is needed and you don't even have to be studying media.

We have flagged New Year's Day in the email as our target deadline. If that is not possible, we can personally try to see how far our deadline will go with the printer.

Guidelines – subject reviewsThere are lots of different ways you can approach a subject review – it’s up to you how you do it. However, there are two key features we recommend including.

The key (often overlooked) thing we'd recommend mentioning is what type of people might/might not like the subject (if you know). One of us did a subject this semester that they found was very focussed on practical skills and IT; it fitted them really well and they would give it glowing reviews. However, some others who really like media theory absolutely hated it. If we did have that kind of information for a subject, we'd note that in my review.

We'd also note the kind of assessment you received in the subject – did you feel that it was clear and easy to understand what you had to do to do well?
