What to expect on a Historic Houses tour in the UKA friendly Tour Manager will meet you at the hotel on the first day and will host a welcome drinks reception, giving you the opportunity to meet the rest of the group. The Tour Manager’s role is to make sure your visits run smoothly and that you enjoy your break. If you have any queries or experience any issues during your stay, please talk to your Tour Manager who will be happy to assist you, ensuring your enjoyment of the break is not compromised.

You will be travelling with a group of like-minded people and you are likely to find them interesting and congenial company. Therefore, dinners at the hotel will be arranged on a group basis and you will be asked to be seated in the restaurant at a specific time each evening. Tables will be set out in 4s, 6s or 8s so you may share the day’s experiences together. Menus will be set but with a minimum of three choices for each of the three courses. Some restaurants may feature buffet-style service.

You will also be able to enjoy a fascinating after-dinner talk by an expert in their field that promises to be both informative and engaging. Taking inspiration from the theme of our tours, you’ll be able to gain a valuable insight into an aspect of the history, architecture or collections of the area that you are visiting.

All the hotels that we use have been carefully selected following inspection visits. They are conveniently located for our touring itinerary and we are confident that they deliver a good level of service and comfort in line with their 4-star rating.

Please note that the Historic Houses properties that we visit are sometimes located in remote countryside areas which do involve travelling some distance to reach by coach. We try not to make any single leg of your journey longer than an hour and a half when you are travelling on excursion days.

You will also need a reasonable degree of mobility to keep with the pace of the tour. As a general guideline, we recommend that you are comfortable to stroll for 20-30 minutes at a time.

These tours are carefully planned (sometimes over a year in advance) to deliver a unique insight into many of the properties we visit. Our aim is to provide you with a faultless service from your booking experience to your return home.

Afterwards we visit the charming Suffolk seaside town of Southwold. Almost an island, being bounded by the sea to the east and rivers to the south and north, Southwold has its own unique character and history. During our visit we enjoy a tour of the working Southwold Lighthouse. Commissioned in 1890 and electrified in 1938, the lighthouse provides a waymark for vessels navigating the coast, and guides vessels into Southwold Harbour.

Wednesday: Glemham Hall & Helmingham Hall Gardens Glemham Hall is a charming manor house, built around 1560 by the de Glemham family. On our guided tour led by the owner, we explore the depths of the cellars up to the servants quarters in the attic, an area largely untouched by restoration where we can get a real sense of life ‘below stairs’. Our tour also uncovers art, historical events and the lives of some of the hall’s previous occupants.

Natural Beauty & Architectural Splendours of Suffolk

Sunday: ArrivalWe check in to the Novotel Ipswich Centre in the afternoon. Later, we enjoy a welcome drinks reception hosted by our tour manager.

Monday: Kentwell Hall & SudburyOur first visit takes us to Kentwell Hall, a romantic, moated, mellow red brick Tudor mansion in a tranquil parkland setting. Once neglected, the Hall has been lovingly restored by the current owner, Patrick Phillips, slowly returning it to its former glory. We enjoy an exclusive guided tour of this much-loved family home and have time to explore the beautiful gardens before enjoying lunch here.

We continue to the historic market town of Sudbury, located on the River Stour, where we

enjoy a guided walking tour. The town is known for its links to Thomas Gainsborough, England’s renowned 18th-century portrait painter, who was born here and was inspired by the glorious surrounding countryside.

After dinner this evening, we enjoy an interesting themed talk from a guest speaker.

Tuesday: Somerleyton Hall & Southwold We spend the morning at Somerleyton Hall, one of the finest Victorian stately homes in the country. The original Jacobean manor house was lavishly rebuilt in the Italianate style by Sir Morton Peto and architect John Thomas. Now home to Lord and Lady Somerleyton, the inside of the house is a pastiche of styles from high Victorian splendour in the chintz ballroom to the dark Jacobean Oak Parlour. The house also contains many fine portraits of the Crossley family, tapestries and two stuffed Polar bears – souvenirs of Lord Somerleyton's 1897 excursion to the Arctic. Our guided tour brings this fabulous house to life.

Inspiring Malvern & Worcestershire Houses & Gardens The Malvern Hills are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that has long inspired writers and composers. Their craggy outline dominates the surrounding countryside where fascinating castles, houses and beautiful gardens are dotted throughout the unspoilt, picturesque landscape. Offering an eclectic mix of architectural influences, interior styles and glorious gardens, we visit some of the area’s highlights including magnificent Eastnor Castle.

Sunday: ArrivalWe check in to the Jurys Inn Cheltenham in the afternoon. Later, we enjoy a welcome drinks reception hosted by our tour manager.

We then enjoy a little free time in the city where you will be able to purchase lunch.

We then travel to Kiftsgate Court Gardens, set on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment with lovely views towards the Malvern Hills. Tuesday: Eastnor Castle & Bromesberrow PlaceOur day begins at Eastnor Castle, lying at the foot of the Malvern Hills and surrounded by a beautiful deer park, arboretum and lake. On arrival, we enjoy morning coffee before our private guided tour. This 19th-century revival castle was built by the 2nd Baron (Lord) Somers and continues to be inhabited by his descendants, the Hervey-Bathurst family. The richly decorated interiors feature an eclectic mix of styles including Gothic Revival and Renaissance and the magnificent State Rooms are home to collections of medieval armour, fine art and tapestries.

Next we visit Bromesberrow Place where we enjoy lunch, a private guided tour and a talk about the history of the house. This Regency Greek Revival house has a fascinating social history as it was owned by David Ricardo and boasts a special collection of English Sporting Art. The house was originally set within 100 acres of parkland however in 1993 this was extended by a further 100 acres.

Wednesday: Ragley Hall & Spetchley Park GardensRagley Hall is one of England’s earliest and finest Palladian mansions. Built for the 1st Earl of Conway in 1680, the Hall is the ancestral family home of the 9th Marquess of Hertford. The State Rooms are adorned with impressive art, ceramics and furniture and other features include the elaborately plastered Great Hall and stunning 20th-century mural The Temptation, all of which we discover on our guided tour. Outside are well-maintained formal gardens within beautiful ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped parkland. After our tour, we enjoy mid-morning tea and biscuits.

In the afternoon, we visit Spetchley Park Gardens. The legacy of the Berkeley family, these 30 acres of beautiful Victorian gardens, surrounded by ancient parkland and lakes, have remained largely unaltered in the last century and boast an enviable collection of plants from across the globe. The gardens offer a wonderful contrast; from formal to informal and quintessentially English to unmistakably Mediterranean, which we learn about on our guided tour.

Castles & Churches of Northumberland & the BordersThe rugged county of Northumberland is steeped in history, with a host of ancient castles, ruined abbeys and picturesque stately homes dotting the scenic countryside. We learn more about the intriguing stories behind the powerful castles that dominate the landscape, including Naworth Castle, still the private ancestral home of the Howard family, and admire the beautiful architecture of churches and monastic buildings. From impressive medieval estates to fine examples of Gothic exteriors and Palladian designs, we experience the vast history of the area.

Monday: ArrivalWe check in to the Slaley Hall Hotel in the afternoon. Later, we enjoy a welcome drinks reception hosted by our tour manager.

Tuesday: Naworth Castle & Lanercost PrioryThis morning we visit Naworth Castle, the private ancestral home of the Howard family. We enjoy an exclusive private guided tour by the current owner, Philip Howard, followed by lunch. A border stronghold dating back to 1335, the castle was remodelled in the 16th and 17th centuries. Almost destroyed by a devastating fire in 1844, restoration began in 1850 but the interiors were the work of the 9th Earl of Carlisle who counted many of the eminent Pre Raphaelites, including William Morris, among his friends.

Nearby stands the Augustinian Lanercost Priory, founded in 1166. The tranquil setting of the priory belies an often troubled history. Standing close to Hadrian’s Wall, it suffered frequent attacks during the long Anglo-Scottish wars. Although the chancel and transepts are in ruins, the cloisters are beautifully preserved. We are also able to visit the beautiful priory church nearby.

Wednesday: Raby Castle, Brancepeth Castle & St Brandon’s ChurchWe make our way to Raby Castle, where we enjoy refreshments followed by a special VIP tour. King Cnut owned the estate in the early 11th century but it was the Nevilles, one of the major powers in the North, who built the 14th-century castle we see today. with the sumptuous interiors which span Medieval, Regency and Victorian periods and provide a magnificent backdrop for the stunning art collection.

Our next stop is Brancepeth Castle, once the stronghold of the Neville family in medieval times. The current castle is a combination of the Neville’s medieval towers and the grand country house created for the wealthy Russell family in the Regency period. The castle is once again a private home and we enjoy an exclusive guided tour of the main rooms and medieval cellars. Afterwards, we make a short visit to St Brandon’s Church opposite the castle in Brancepeth village.

Thursday: Durham Cathedral & Rokeby Park or Ushaw We start the day with a visit to Durham Cathedral, a World Heritage Site, sitting on a rocky promontory high above the River Wear. Originally built in 1093 as a monastic cathedral for a community of Benedictine monks, the cathedral boasts some of the most intact surviving monastic buildings in England.

If you join us in June, we then head to Rokeby Park where we enjoy a guided tour by the

current owner and refreshments. Completed in 1735 by its owner, Sir Thomas Robinson, this architectural treasure represents the heyday of the Palladian-style country house. A unique collection of 18th-century needlework pictures by Anne Morritt are on display here as well as a very rare surviving print room.

Alternatively, if you join us in September, we then head to Ushaw founded over 200 years ago to educate students for the Catholic priesthood. The vast estate contains buildings designed by Augustus Pugin and his followers and boasts significant examples of Victorian Gothic architecture. We discover some of the main buildings and chapel on our guided tour.

After dinner this evening, we enjoy an interesting themed talk from a guest speaker.

We visit Longleat House, one of the finest examples of Elizabethan architecture in Britain, as well as the Grade-1 listed Italianate Peto Garden, which boasts impressive views of the Frome River valley. This is combined with time in iconic Bath, where we learn more of this unique city’s Georgian connections, and a memorable trip to the theatre in one of England’s most vibrant cities, Bristol.

Sunday: ArrivalWe check in to the Aztec Hotel and Spa in the afternoon. Later, we enjoy a welcome drinks reception hosted by our tour manager.

Monday: Longleat House, Wells & Bishop's Palace and Gardens We begin the day with a visit to Longleat House which is widely regarded as one of the best examples of high Elizabethan architecture in Britain. Substantially completed by 1580 and now home to the 7th Marquess of Bath, Longleat House is set within 900 acres of stunning ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped parkland. We take a guided tour around the house before enjoying an included lunch.

Our final stop is Van Buuren House. Once a private house built for banker and art collector David van Buuren and his wife Alice in the 1920s, the property is now a museum. Admire rare furniture, stained-glass windows and international masterpieces.

Sunday: St Bavo’s Cathedral & Ghent Today we head to St Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent for an audio guided tour. The cathedral stands on the site of a 10th-century church and a 12th-century Romanesque church. Due to the city’s power in the Middle Ages, the church was converted during the 15th and 16th centuries into the impressive Gothic cathedral we see today.

We then have free time to explore Ghent. No other city in Belgium has as many classified buildings, so make sure to admire the medieval and classical architecture.

Monday: Bruges & BéguinageOur day begins in the lovely city of Bruges with a guided tour. Known as ‘the Venice of northern Europe’, Bruges is a beautifully-preserved medieval city of picturesque canals, impressive squares and cobbled lanes. We explore the historic centre and see the famous medieval bell tower.

Afterwards, we visit the Béguinage with its white-coloured house fronts and tranquil covent garden, founded in 1245. Once home to the Béguines, women who dedicated their lives to God, today the Béguinage is inhabited by the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict.

Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner together.

Wednesday: ArrivalWe fly to Nice and transfer to our hotel in the heart of the city. Later, we enjoy dinner together in a local restaurant.

Thursday: Villa Ephrussi de RothschildThe Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is a chic early 20th-century villa built by Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild on the St-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula. This morning we enjoy a guided tour of the villa, evocative of an Italian palazzo and home to nine separately themed gardens overlooking the Mediterranean.

The rest of the day is left free to explore Nice, an opportunity perhaps to wander along the Promenade des Anglais or visit Castle Hill, where

the ruins of the former Château de Nice and other landmarks of historical importance can be found. The hill is also a beautiful park which offers magnificent views over the Baie des Anges, Old Nice and the port.

Friday: Prince’s Palace of Monaco & Exotic Garden of Monaco We make our way to the tiny principality of Monaco, ruled by the Grimaldis since 1346. Its wealth came from the famous Casino, founded by Charles III in 1848. We visit the State Apartments of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco, the official residence of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco. Built at the end of the 12th century as a Genoese fortress, the palace was captured by the Grimaldi dynasty in 1297 and has remained in the family ever since.

Afterwards we head to the Exotic Garden of Monaco, an outstanding open-air botanical garden that opened to the public in 1933. With its stunning location along the edge of a cliff

Villas & Gardens on the French RivieraThe French Riviera is one of the world's most famous coastlines. What began as a winter health resort for the British upper class at the end of the 18th century also became the inspiration for many well-known artists, attracted by the region’s mild climate, vivid colours and clear light. As well as its rich artistic legacy, we also discover wonderful gardens in stunning locations, beautiful villas, picturesque resorts and the famous Principality of Monaco.

Saturday: Day at leisure in Nice

Sunday: Cagnes-sur-Mer, Grimaldi Castle Museum & Renoir MuseumWe spend the day in the picturesque seaside resort of Cagnes-sur-Mer, perfectly nestled between Nice and Cannes. The resort offers a long pebble beach and a charming fishing port, all overlooked by the medieval quarter of Haut-de-Cagnes with its narrow lanes full of artists’ studios and galleries and stunning views of the Mediterranean.

Perched on a hilltop in the heart of Haut-de-Cagnes is the Grimaldi Castle Museum, a 14th-century stronghold that was subsequently transformed into a palatial home. One of its most striking features is the painted ceiling in the great hall which depicts the Fall of Phaëton. Today, it features several collections of contemporary and modern art.

Over the years, many famous artists have made Cagnes-sur-Mer their home and our last visit of the day is to the exquisite Renoir Museum, the family home and studio of Impressionist painter Auguste Renoir. It is a wonderfully evocative museum with many personal photographs and paintings, with the beautiful olive and citrus groves in the garden as much an attraction as the museum itself.

Monday: Cannes & AntibesWe head first to Cannes, renowned for its Film Festival, where we spend a few hours at leisure. Enjoy the waterfront avenue, Promenade de la Croisette, lined with palm trees, picturesque beaches, restaurants, cafés and upmarket boutiques and visit Le Suquet, Cannes’ old quarter, with its medieval buildings, winding, cobbled streets and panoramic views of Cannes.

From here we continue to the picturesque resort of Antibes where we have free time to explore. The historic old town within the ancient ramparts has retained much of its original character with quaint cobbled streets lined with pretty houses, boutiques and cafés. Port Vauban, the largest marina in Europe, is home to huge superyachts while the magnificent Fort Carré stands watch on the far side.

This evening, we enjoy a farewell dinner together in a local restaurant.

Tuesday: DepartureWe check out of our hotel and transfer to Nice airport for our flight home.

Please note: on this tour a reasonable amount of walking is required as vehicular access is not always possible close to the sites of our visits. Often steep inclines and steps lead the way to certain properties. Therefore, we do not consider this tour suitable for persons of reduced mobility or those unable to walk unaided.
