Escaping the Muggers Choke

Remember to practices only with a qualified instructor and only if you can do so safely.

Let’s say you were caught by surprise. The attacker comes from behind and grabs you around the throat. The danger of this is to make sure there is not a knife to your throat. If a knife were in play, you would NOT use this technique

Q. Where would a choke across the throat fall on the DT4EMS Assault Response Guidelines?

As with most of our defense moves, immediately get your hands up and open. Tuck your chin!

Grab the attacker’s arm that is around your throat and “Pin” it to your chest using your BP2BM principle. At the same time you lower your center by widening your feet and bending both knees. Keep your head up straight for now.

While keeping the attacker “pinned” to you, drop to one knee. Usually drop to the same side knee of the arm that is around your throat. Keep your chin tucked. This has to be quick to not alert the attacker how you are going to escape.

The moment your knee hits the ground…… Pretend you are trying to put your shoulder (the side you are taking them over) on the ground while trying to stay in a kneeling position.

The Muggers Choke Defense is something that you should take serious. It is a “common attack” for a person to grab someone from behind and around the throat. Remember to practice slowly and safely. AHCK/DT4EMS believes in training for self-defense. We do not teach techniques for NHB competition or acts of aggression. Training in self-defense works in two ways:

1) It keeps people from reverting to cave-man style techniques when faced with a violent encounter and

2) Keeps trained people from acting out to prove themselves due to a lack of self-esteem.

There are numerous techniques on the DT4EMS DVD. Kip will also travel and teach seminars on self-defense to EMS providers. More techniques can be viewed for free at www.dt4ems.net . Your agency can host a DT4EMS seminar. It is good for 16 CEU’s in Missouri. We will apply for CEU’s in your State. Email Kip : [email protected]

Once the attacker is off of you, you will have to make the decision to strike or not. If you chose to strike a “Palm Heel” is recommended here. Use your Target Seeking for appropriate targets. Loud Verbal Commands as well as fleeing at the first moment you could safely do so is highly recommended.
