Breakthrough To Nursing
Breakthrough to Nursing (BTN)
• The primary goal of NSNA’s Breakthrough to Nursing Project is to increase the number of qualified students enrolled in and graduated from nursing schools.
• The BTN Project was started in 1965 to address NSNA’s concerns regarding national issues which remain relevant today:
• Recruitment and retention
• Minority recruitment
• Men in the profession
• Young students
• Non-traditional students
• Mentoring and support of all enrolled in professional nursing programs

2015 Resolutions that were passed
• Increased awareness and education regarding interpreter use for limited English proficiency patients
• Interprofessional education advancement
• Mentoring programs to improve nursing students overall wellness

• The adequacy of health care services for minorities.
• The need to increase the number of minority health care providers.
• The need to provide opportunities for minority nursing students to develop leadership skills.
• The need for the nursing education system to be more responsive to the needs of minority students.

“The biggest problem I am currently facing as the state level BTN director is a lack of guidance or mentorship.”
• Jennie Nguyen (Kansas – BTN Director):
“In Kansas it has been a challenge to get responses from schools that we have reached out to. Locally, it has been a challenge to encourage participation from students and support from faculty because the benefits of being active weren't clear in the past.”
• Daniel Duron (California – BTN Committee Member):
"Obstacles: this is at a local level but the lack of volunteers make hard for BTN Projects to follow through."
Goals For 2015 - 2016
• Enhance membership awareness of BTN mission and goals.
• Promote mentorship for leadership activities. This is to promote cultural awareness, diversity, and competence.
• Identify evidence based practice mentorship programs or surveys for leadership in nursing organization and schools.
• Exhibit 4 to 6 BTN success stories on the NSNA website.
