A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTOR

ESA is today one of the main players in higher education in Lebanon. Born in 1996, thanks to favorable international circumstances, a political desire stated at the highest levels, and the men and women who were able to convince, construct, and then support this newly created institution.

These different factors, essential to the success of the original idea, were regrouped under the banner of innovation and change. This was the desire of its founders when establishing a prestigious Business School in Lebanon, and they had a clear mission: to train the Lebanese elite into the leaders of tomorrow.

Today, it is the flying faculty, and the students from the country or the region, who drive this hub for privileged exchanges between Lebanon and France, and between Europe and the Middle East. From these exchanges is born a mutual enrichment that is unique. In an era of globalization, our challenge is to educate citizens, accountable leaders, and actors of change. Without relinquishing their culture, and while preserving their values and convictions, these graduates of ESA develop an original and efficient leadership style, highly valued by businesses.

Many among them today have assumed important responsibilities in their country, or elsewhere in the world. Graduates now number over 3000, representing all the communities and regions of Lebanon, and are always ready to take action for their School. Each in their own way are an inspiration for Lebanon, France or wherever they may find themselves, and as the years go by, none have forgotten their time spent on the campus of Rue Clemenceau.

This exceptional location is an integral part of, and a witness to, their success. Dotted around this green isle spared from urban development, are buildings recalling centuries gone by, evoking the history of Lebanon, such as the old German Hospital, which became a French Military Hospital, before being transformed into a diplomatic French Chancellery. Henceforth dedicated to being an innovative, forward-looking, academic institution, Clemenceau will always be devoted to public service.

Following its birth and maturity, a new phase of development is now underway. The founders of ESA and its initial strategic partners have decided to endow the School with new means. Major works have begun on campus to renovate the Villa Rose. As such a witness to Lebanon’s prestigious past will tomorrow become one of the tools with which its future is built when it welcomes a large, regional financial training centre of excellence, supported by the Central Bank of Lebanon, to help form the leaders of the region.

Born under the banner of innovation, it will be thanks to even more innovation that ESA will continue to grow, and better contribute in helping return Lebanon to its preeminent role in the region.

L’ESA est aujourd’hui l’un des acteurs privilégiés de l’éducation au Liban, fondée en 1996, grâce à un contexte international favorable, une volonté politique affirmée au plus haut niveau, des hommes et des femmes qui ont su convaincre, construire, puis accompagner la nouvelle institution fraîchement créée…

Ces différents facteurs, indispensables à la réussite de l’idée d’origine, ont été réunis sous le signe de l’innovation et du changement. C’est ce qu’ont voulu ses fondateurs en créant une Grande École de management pour le Liban, avec une mission claire : former les élites du Liban pour devenir les leaders de demain.

Aujourd’hui ce sont les professeurs et experts internationaux, les étudiants du pays ou de la région, qui animent cette plate-forme d’échanges privilégiés entre le Liban et la France, entre l’Europe et le Moyen-Orient. De ces échanges naît un enrichissement réciproque unique en son genre. À l’heure de la mondialisation, l’enjeu est de former des citoyens, des leaders responsables, des acteurs du changement. Sans renoncer à leur culture, en préservant leurs valeurs et leurs convictions, les diplômés de l’ESA développent un style de leadership original, efficace et très apprécié des entreprises.

Nombre d’entre eux exercent aujourd’hui d’importantes responsabilités, dans leur pays ou ailleurs dans le monde. Ils sont ainsi plus de 3000 diplômés, représentant toutes les communautés et toutes les régions du Liban et toujours prêts à se mobiliser pour leur École. Chacun à sa façon est un relais d’influence pour le Liban, pour la France et où qu’il (ou elle) se trouve, aucun n’a oublié ces années à part passées sur le campus de la rue Clemenceau.

Ce site exceptionnel est un acteur et un témoin de leur réussite. Parsemant cet îlot de verdure épargné par l’expansion urbaine, des bâtiments des siècles passés évoquent l’histoire du Liban : l’ancien hôpital allemand devenu hôpital militaire français, transformé ensuite en chancellerie diplomatique française. Désormais dédié à une institution académique innovante, tournée vers l’avenir, c’est toujours à une mission de service public que Clemenceau est voué.

Après la naissance et la maturité, une nouvelle phase de développement est en cours : les fondateurs de l’ESA, ses partenaires stratégiques depuis l’origine, ont décidé de doter l’École de nouveaux moyens. Des travaux de grande envergure ont démarré sur le campus, pour rénover la Villa Rose, témoin prestigieux du passé du Liban; demain, elle sera l’un des outils de la construction de son avenir, en accueillant un grand centre de formation régional et d’excellence en finance appuyé par la Banque du Liban ainsi qu’un dispositif de développement pour les dirigeants de la région.

Née sous le signe de l’innovation, c’est en innovant toujours plus que l’ESA continuera à grandir, pour encore mieux contribuer à rendre au Liban son rôle prééminent dans la région.

L’HISTOIREDE L’ESAL’idée de créer à Beyrouth une Grande École de commerce a été initiée et promue, en particulier auprès de la Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris, par le professeur Fayek Abillama, qui fut également Président de l’Association des Anciens élèves de HEC au Liban. À ce moment-là, M. Jean-Pierre Lafon, alors Ambassadeur de France au Liban, convaincu de la nécessité de renforcer la coopération franco-libanaise en matière de formation, adopta l’idée de créer un établissement d’enseignement supérieur de gestion proche des préoccupations des milieux professionnels.

HISTORY OF ESA

The idea behind creating an important Business School in Beirut came from, and was promoted—in particular toward the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry—by Professor Fayek Abillama, who was also the President of the HEC Alumni Association in Lebanon.

At the same time, Mr. Jean-Pierre Lafon—Ambassador of France to Lebanon—convinced of the necessity of increasing Franco-Lebanese cooperation in matters of education, adopted the idea of creating a Business School to address the needs of the business community.

In May 1995, he approached the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry to set his plan in motion, in close collaboration with The Central Bank of Lebanon and its Governor, Mr. Riad Salamé.

A partnership was thereafter established between the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Central Bank of Lebanon, and the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

ESA was officially established on April 5, 1996, in the presence of President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, through an intergovernmental agreement signed between France and Lebanon, and an institutional agreement signed between The Central Bank of Lebanon and the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

En mai 1995, il sollicita la Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris pour mettre en œuvre le projet, en étroite liaison avec la Banque du Liban et son gouverneur, M. Riad Salamé.

Un partenariat fut alors mis en place entre le Ministère Français des Affaires Étrangères, la Banque du Liban et la Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris.

L’ESA a été officiellement créée le 5 avril 1996, en présence des présidents Jacques Chirac et Rafic Hariri, dans le cadre d’un accord intergouvernemental signé entre la France et le Liban et d’une convention entre la Banque du Liban et la Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris.

Le Bachelor in Business Administration, en partenariat avec l’ESSEC Business School, est un programme de 1er

cycle, qui vise à former de jeunes managers dynamiques qui sauront s’intégrer rapidement sur le marché du travail.Les candidats ont le choix entre deux parcours : le parcours 3 ans pour obtenir le BBA de l’ESA ou le parcours 4 ans pour obtenir deux diplômes : l’ESSEC Global BBA et l’ESA Global BBA.

Le Master en Management - Programme Grande École est destiné aux étudiants de niveau bac+3 (Bachelor). Les candidats ont le choix entre deux parcours (Liban ou France). Ce programme en 2 ans (M1 et M2) permet de se préparer à exercer de fortes responsabilités dans un environnement économique mondialisé, en perpétuelle mutation.

Le Master in Business Administration (MBA) est un programme international en management pour des jeunes professionnels (minimum 3 ans d’expérience). Il apporte une vision concrète du monde de l’entreprise et de solides connaissances en management de l’entreprise. Ce programme est accrédité AMBA.

L’Executive MBA est une formation à temps partiel, de très haut niveau, destinée aux cadres et dirigeants ayant au minimum 5 ans d’expérience managériale. Le Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) est un parcours de recherche de haut niveau encadré par des professeurs-chercheurs internationaux. Il s’adresse à des cadres et dirigeants d’entreprise voulant contribuer au développement des théories et pratiques managériales. Ce programme est rattaché au Centre de Recherche, d’Étude et de Développement (CRED) de l’ESA en partenariat avec l’Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne.

Les trois Mastères de Spécialisation sont des programmes à temps partiel adaptés aux contraintes de professionnels en activité permettant un approfondissement des connaissances dans des domaines spécifiques :

• Executive Masters in Financial Management, formation de 18 mois, en partenariat avec SDA Bocconi School of Management, intégralement dispensée en anglais.

• Mastère de Spécialisation en Marketing et Communication, formation de 14 mois, en partenariat avec ESCP Europe, qui permet une maîtrise approfondie des concepts de marketing.

CURRICULUMS DESIGNED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE REGIONAL MARKET

The Bachelor in Business Administration, in partnership with ESSEC Business School, is a first cycle program, which aims to train young dynamic managers into quickly integrating the working world.Candidates have the choice between two paths: the 3-year path for obtaining the BBA ESA diploma or the 4-year path to obtain two diplomas: BBA ESSEC Global and ESA Global BBA.

The Masters in Management, Grande École Program is geared at Bachelor students. Applicants have the choice between two paths: either Lebanon or France. This 2-year program (M1 and M2) allows them to prepare for the constantly changing, high-level responsibilities to be found in a globalized economy.

The Masters in Business Administration (MBA) is an international general business program for young professionals with a minimum of three years work experience. It provides a solid vision of the business world and lays sound foundations in business management. This program is AMBA accredited.

The Executive MBA is a part-time, very high-level course, geared toward executives and managers with a minimum of five years experience in a managerial role. Delivered entirely in English, adapted to specific timetables, and including four international seminars—Turkey, United States, China or India—this course gives students the possibility of putting their leadership skills into practice, allowing them to face the problematic issues of today’s business world. This program is AMBA accredited.

The Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) is a course of high-level research supervised by international professors and researchers. It is aimed at managers and business leaders who wish to contribute to the development of management theories and practices. This program is linked with ESA’s Centre for Graduate Study, Research and Development (CRED), in partnership with the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne.

The three Specialized Masters are part-time courses adapted to the constraints of working professionals, which offer in-depth knowledge learning within specific domains:

• The Executive Masters in Financial Management (EMFM) An eighteen-month course in association with the SDA

L’Association of MBAs (AMBA) est un organisme international basé à Londres, qui accrédite les programmes Master of Business Administration (MBA) et les Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA). L’accréditation AMBA repose sur des standards internationaux exigeants et attribue un label de qualité aux meilleures Écoles de Management et Universités. Plus de 100 critères qualitatifs sont examinés. L’accréditation n’est décernée que les si les programmes répondent à l’intégralité de ces critères.

Seules 210 Business Schools ou universités la détiennent dans 52 pays dans le monde, parmi lesquelles ESCP Europe, HEC Paris, l’INSEAD ou RSM (Rotterdam School of Management). L’ESA est la première institution à l’obtenir au Liban et la deuxième dans la région. Le Liban peut donc désormais être fier de figurer parmi les pays proposant des programmes MBA et EMBA disposant de cette reconnaissance internationale.

Il s’agit là d’une étape très importante pour l’ESA dans son objectif stratégique de devenir la meilleure Business School de la région, en proposant des programmes très proches des réalités des entreprises et toujours plus innovants.

The AMBA accreditation is granted based on strict international standards and assigns a quality label to the best Business Schools and Universities. Over 100 quality criteria are examined; accreditation is only awarded to the programs, which meet all these criteria.

Only 210 business schools and universities in 52 countries hold such accreditation, including ESCP Europe, HEC Paris, INSEAD and the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM). ESA Business School is the first institution in Lebanon and the second in the region to receive such a distinction. Formations autour du secteur bancaire et financier

HISTOIRE Du CAmpuS

À partir de 1860, des missions allemandes s’implantent dans la région du Levant. L’une des importantes réalisations de ces œuvres protestantes allemandes est l’hôpital Saint Jean de Beyrouth qui est dirigé par l’ordre des Johannites de Kaiserswerth.

À la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale, la France se voit confier un mandat sur cette partie de l’Empire Ottoman qui regroupe le Liban et la Syrie actuels.

C’est ainsi que la France “hérite” de l’hôpital Saint Jean ‘’au titre des dommages de guerre’’. Celui-ci est alors transformé en hôpital militaire français. Cet hôpital est aujourd’hui le bâtiment principal de l’ESA.

Lorsque les troupes militaires françaises quittent le Liban, à l’indépendance, en 1943, le site change définitivement d’orientation pour accueillir la chancellerie diplomatique française et l’ensemble de ses services jusqu’en 1983. À cette date, les services diplomatiques français sont déplacés à Mar Takla (banlieue de Beyrouth).

En 1995, les gouvernements libanais et français décident de créer un important dispositif de formation destiné aux cadres du Liban et de la région et le site de Clemenceau est choisi pour accueillir l’ESA.

THE CAMPUS HISTORY

As of 1860, German missions were established in the Levant region. One of the important achievements of these German Protestant missions was that of the Saint Jean de Beyrouth Hospital, managed by the Order of St. John of Kaiserswerth.

At the end of the First World War, France saw itself afforded a mandate over the part of the Ottoman Empire that today regroups Lebanon and Syria. Thus, France “inherited” the Saint Jean Hospital, under the auspices of “damages of war.” It was then converted into a French Military Hospital.

This hospital today is the main building of ESA.

When the French military troops left Lebanon, upon the advent of Independence in 1943, the location changed definitively, to house the French Chancellery and the entirety of its services until 1983, at which point the French diplomatic services were moved to Mar Takla, a suburb of Beirut.

In 1995, the Lebanese and French governments decided to establish an important training and education centre, aimed at executives in Lebanon and the region, and the Clemenceau site was chosen to house ESA.

LE CAmpuS DE L’ESA AuJOuRD’HuI

Un campus de 35 000 m², un parc boisé unique au cœur de Beyrouth.

6 bâtiments équipés dans le but de recevoir les étudiants et cadres en formation dans les meilleures conditions pour la réflexion, la recherche et le réseau.

(A) Bâtiment principal comprenant les bureaux de l’administration, des salles de travail et les amphithéâtres de cours. Au rez-de-chaussée se trouve l’auditorium Fattal, d’une capacité de 150 personnes, qui accueille souvent des manifestations telles que des conférences ou tables rondes.

(B) Le Centre de Documentation Internationale en Management (CEDIM) se trouve dans le bâtiment situé au nord du campus en rentrant par le portail principal. Le CEDIM peut accueillir jusqu’à 65 lecteurs sur une superficie de 240 m².

La salle de sport se trouve au rez-de-chaussée de ce même bâtiment.

(C) L’IMEF, l’Institut Monétaire et Financier est le lieu de formation qui permet aux étudiants, ainsi qu’aux opérateurs libanais et régionaux, d’acquérir des connaissances de haut niveau en finance.Ce centre est doté d’une salle des marchés équipée pour former les étudiants du domaine financier et bancaire aux marchés boursiers. Cette salle a été réalisée dans le cadre du partenariat ESA - Thomson Reuters.

(D) La Villa du Pasteur est réservée aux invités, intervenants et professeurs de l’ESA.

(E) La Villa Rose accueille l’Institut pour la Finance et la Gouvernance créé en partenariat avec la Banque du Liban.

(F) L’ancien Consulat est aujourd’hui en cours de restauration.

THE ESA CAMPUS TODAY

A 35,000 square meter campus; a wooded park unique to the heart of Beirut.

Six buildings equipped to welcome students and executives undergoing training, in the best possible conditions for reflection, research and networking.

(A) The main building housing the administration offices, work spaces and the lecture halls. The Fattal auditorium is located on the ground floor, with a capacity of one-hundred and fifty people, and often hosts events such as conferences or round-table discussions.

(B) The International Centre for Management Documentation (CEDIM) is located in the building to the north of the campus, when entering via the main gate. The CEDIM can welcome up to sixty-five readers over an area of 240 square meters. The gym is located on the ground floor of the same building.

(C) The IMEF, the Monetary and Financial Institute, is a training centre which affords both students, and Lebanese and regional operatives, the possibility of acquiring high-level financial knowledge. This centre includes a fully-equipped trading room to train finance and banking students on the operations of the stock market. This trading room was established under the framework of the ESA-Thomson Reuters partnership.

(D) The Villa du Pasteur is reserved purely for guests, speakers, and professors invited by ESA.

(E) The Villa Rose welcomes the Institute for Finance and Governance created in partnership with the Central Bank of Lebanon.

(F) The Consulat is currently undergoing restoration.

Ce bâtiment récemment rénové accueille l’IFG, l’Institut pour la Finance et la Gouvernance.

Ce concept unique, fortement appuyé par la Banque du Liban, a été développé pour devenir un lieu de réflexion et de prospective sur le rôle des banques centrales dans la région. Il a aussi pour vocation de professionnaliser et d’apporter le soutien nécessaire aux domaines de la finance et du management tant par l’éducation que par l’organisation de rencontres, conférences et tables rondes sur des thématiques spécifiques.

2/ L’auditorium Georges W. Audi

L’auditorium est adjacent à la Villa Rose. Équipé grâce au soutien de la Banque Audi, il consiste en un auditorium de 400 places bénéficiant des meilleurs équipements technologiques, aménagé en sous-sol et totalement intégré dans le paysage, ainsi que d’une salle polyvalente de 170m2.

Cet espace est dédié à l’organisation de conférences animées par des intervenants de renommée mondiale et des dirigeants de grandes institutions bancaires et financières.

1. The Villa Rose

This buiding newly renovated hosts the IFG, the Institute for Finance and Governance.

This unique concept, which was strongly supported by the Central Bank of Lebanon, has been developed to become a place of thinking and foresight on the role of central banks in the region. It is also intended to professionalize and provide the necessary support to the fields of finance and management through education and by organizing meetings, conferences and round tables on specific topics.

2. The Georges W. Audi Auditorium

The auditorium is adjacent to the Villa Rose. Equipped with the support of Bank Audi, the location comprises of an auditorium of 400 seats, enjoying the best technological equipment, and is located on the basement level, completely integrated to the landscape. In addition, it houses a multi-purpose hall of 170 sqm.

This space is dedicated to regional and international conferences, led by world renowned speakers and the leaders of large banking and finance institutions.

L’ESA ET L’ARTDepuis son origine, l’ESA s’est fortement impliquée dans la promotion de l’art et de la culture au Liban.

Cet engagement traduit à la fois une volonté institutionnelle et une culture d’entreprise.

Au fil des années, le campus de l’ESA est devenu un lieu d’exposition artistique, au sein duquel les étudiants croisent les sculptures de Nadim Karam, les toiles de Jean-Marc Dallanegra, les œuvres de Saër Karam, Ayman Baalbacki ou de Leila Kazma et tant d’autres. Ces manifestations ont pour vocation de promouvoir la vision de l’ESA : “former des leaders responsables, ouverts sur le monde et innovants”.

Son ambition est en effet de sensibiliser ses étudiants à de nouvelles formes d’expression, à l’innovation, à la création, qui est l’un des ressorts de l’entrepreneuriat.

L’ESA a également pour vocation d’être une plate-forme d’échanges, une fenêtre d’ouverture sur le monde contemporain. Le monde artistique et le monde de l’entreprise convergent résolument vers des intérêts complémentaires : création pour les uns, stratégie pour communiquer différemment et contribuer à la société pour les autres. L’art est toujours une source d’enrichissement réciproque.

De plus, chaque année, l’ESA organise un grand nombre de manifestations artistiques ou culturelles pour adresser un signal de soutien et d’encouragement pour ce domaine au Liban afin de contribuer à faire de Beyrouth un foyer de création et de diffusion, un symbole de liberté et de diversité.

ESA AND ART

Since its creation, ESA has been heavily involved in the promotion of arts and culture in Lebanon.

This commitment reflects both a desire of the institute, and a corporate culture.

Over the years the ESA campus has become a setting for art exhibitions, where students can come across Nadim Karam’s sculptures, Jean-Marc Dallanegra’s paintings, as well as works from Saër Karam, Ayman Baalbacki or Leila Kazma, among many others. These exhibitions are intended to promote ESA’s vision: “To train leaders who are accountable, innovative and open to the world.”

Our ambition is, in effect, to open our students up to new forms of expression, to innovation, and to creation; one of the mainstays of entrepreneurship.

ESA also strives to be a meeting place, opening a window onto the contemporary world. The world of art and the world of business converge resolutely towards complementary interests: creation for the first, strategies for a different style of communication and contribution to society for the second. Art is always a source of mutual enrichment.

Furthermore, each year ESA organizes a big number of artistic or cultural exhibitions to send a message of support and encouragement to this domain in Lebanon, helping uphold Beirut as a hub of creation and dissemination, and a symbol of freedom and diversity.
