Earth Explorers App Contest

Terms and conditions

General information

The European Space Agency (ESA) has dedicated a large part of its activities to observing the Earth from Space.

The ESA’s Living Planet Programme is an initiative aiming to address scientific questions that have a direct

relevance with societal issues that humankind will face in the coming decades. The science and research

element includes the Earth Explorers missions and the Earth Watch component, designated to facilitate the

delivery of Earth Observation data for usage in operational services. The Earth Explorers missions are designed

to address key scientific challenges highlighted by the scientific community and to demonstrate breakthrough

technology in observing techniques.

The Earth Explorers missions proceed, expand and complement the current observational capabilities of the

Copernicus missions. In total 5 satellites have been launched, and have either concluded or are currently

operational:

• Gravity field and steady-ocean Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) (2009-2013);

• Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) (2009- present);

• CryoSat (2010 – present);

• SWARM (2013- present);

• Aeolus (2018- present);

The following missions will be added to the programme in the coming years:

• Earth Cloud, Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE) ;

• Biomass;

• Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX);

• Sea-surface Kinematics Multiscale (SKIM) or Far-infrared Outgoing Radiation Understanding and

Monitoring (FORUM);

Other candidate missions are being planned in the following years.

In line with the programme’s objectives, the Earth Explorers App Contest has been launched. The objective is

to harness ideas related to the development of a digital application for the dissemination of information related

to the Earth Explorer missions. The principal purpose is to facilitate the interaction with the users and the

public, in a visual, structured and easily comprehensible manner, while taking advantage of the latest

technological developments.

The development of the application is not limited to one specific Earth Explorer mission or dataset. The data

products are feely accessible to all users for GOCE, SMOS, CryoSat and SWARM. Aeolus was launched on 22

August 2018 and is still in its early exploitation phase. Public data access is expected later this year. This App

contest should therefore rely on freely accessible data.

Participation rules

The Earth Explorer App Contest is open to any student currently enrolled in an University programme at an

undergraduate or postgraduate level. If selected, students will be requested to provide proof of enrolment.

Students must organise themselves in teams of maximum 3-5 members.

Each team is entitled to submit only ONE idea. In case of multiple submissions, only the first idea will be

considered valid.

The submission must comprise of a document (DOCX, ODT, PDF) containing the following information:

- Name of the team;

- Team members names, affiliation, study programme (undergraduate/postgraduate), short

description;

- Idea (300-500 words);

- Short technical description;

The submission must be sent to the email address: [email protected]. The intent of participating to the Earth Explorers Missions App Contest must to be specified in the Subject of

the e-mail.

The submission must demonstrate originality and vision.

The submission must be technically feasible for quick implementation.

The submission must take into account that the developed application should run on current broadly available

OS systems (iOS, Android) and meet the requirements for the latest distributions of these systems.

While participating in the Earth Explorers App Contest you will get the possibility to visit ESRIN, the ESA

center for Earth Observation, to meet space mission specialists, to interact with students throughout Europe

and to get support for your project. You will need to cover your travel and accommodation expenses.

If you have any questions regarding general information or about the submission of the application, do not

hesitate to contact us ([email protected]). The Earth Explorer App Contest organisation committee is looking

forward to your applications.
