    FEA Assignment

    Submission date:

18th January 2016 (FT MSc Students + REMS CDT)

1st February 2016 (PT MSc Students)

    Assignment Description:

    Perform a 3-dimensional (3D) elastic finite element analysis on a C(T) specimen

geometry with the width of W = 50mm, thickness of B = 25mm and initial crack

length of a0 = 25mm. The total applied load is 1000N and the material elastic

properties are E =140 GPa and v = 0.3. Compare the predicted stress distributions

( and ) from the 3D model with those of obtained from 2D plane stress, 2D

plane strain and analytical solutions from advanced FEA tutorial 1.

The students need to write a technical report explaining the model set up, loading &

boundary conditions, mesh sensitivity analysis, results and discussions. The report

must be written in Arial 12 pt and should not exceed 20 pages in total.

Note 1: Choose an appropriate method to apply the given load on the 3D geometry.

    Note 2: Validate 2D and 3D FE predictions for = 0 and r/a 0.1, where is the

crack tip angle, r is the radial distance ahead of the crack tip and a is the crack

    length.

All students should provide electronically their Abaqus files and report for a valid

    submission.

Students should submit their assignment in a printed copy in a flat-file and not just

    stapled.
