    ALearningCommunity

Educaon is one field that has a language and vernacular all

of its own. At mes, this can prove to be puzzling for the

families as you bear the onslaught of phraseology coming at

you, parcularly if English is not your first language, as is the

case for over two thirds of our community. One of these o

heard phrases is a learning community what does this

actually mean? Well, over the past week we feel that on anumber of levels, ISM has been true to this concept. Last

Tuesday, we held a successful Open House evening where a

large proporon of our parent community was able to get an

insight into their childs learning at ISM. On Thursday, Friday

and Saturday, the Elementary School then hosted a group of

25 vising teachers and leaders from three other established

Internaonal School in Asia Western Academy Beijing, China

(WAB), New Internaonal School Thailand, (NIST) and

Yokohama Internaonal School, Japan (YIS). This is the third

symposium which has been held by the four schools, with a

purpose of bringing together teachers and leaders in similarinquirybased schools to open up discussions and

collaboraon based upon classroom pracce and

pedagogy. A key element of the symposium rests upon the

fact that students are actually in school at the me, such that

classroom observaons can take place and elements of co

planning and coteaching can occur. Eleven praconers

from ISM parcipated in this collaborave project, with the

premise of moving from theory to pracce.

On Sunday, ISM hosted Michael Thompson, author and

educaonal psychologist. He spent three days with our

community, where he had the opportunity to meet with ourleadership team, teachers, parents, counselors and

students. The depth of discourse was inspiring and powerful

as all our key stakeholders were involved in the discussions.

Three separate events all held at ISM over the past week,

supporng the learning of our enre community students,

parents and faculty. Does this make us a learning

    community?

    Homework

It is amazing how one simple word can evoke so many

emoons in so many of us. Ask a Middle or High Schooler

and their eyes may roll. Ask any adult their opinion on

homework and you will get a broad range of responses, mainly stemming from their own experiences with

homework and how this has now influenced their thinking.

On Tuesday next week at our Elementary Parent Coffee

session, we will be looking at the topic of

homework. Some of the ideas we will be thinking about

    are:

What should learning at home look like?

Upon which principles of learning is this based?

What are the homework guidelines in the Elementary

    School at ISM?

Please join us at 7:30 am next Tuesday, 16th September in

the Lile Theater for an interacve session.

THE UNIFORM SHOP WILL OPEN EVERY

    TUESDAY & FRIDAY FROM 7:00AM TO 4:00PM

    THANK YOU

    Message from te Clinic:

The Common Cold or Sipon is an infecon of the nasal mucosa, including the sinuses, the throat

and or bronchi. It is caused primarily by viruses of different species, like Rhino, Entero, Corona,

Adenoor Paramyxoviruses, and there are more than 200 strains known to cause a common cold.

Colds are the most common infecon of mankind.

While adults catch a cold in average two to three mes a year, children are affected up to thirteen

    mes more oen.

In the past few days there have been arcles about respiratory complicaons, caused by Enterovirus

(EV) D68 in children in some states of USA, as well as in some Asian countries, including the Philip

    pines.

Enteroviruses form a quite large family of viruses, and cause 10 15 million infecons in the US yearly. Generally they tend to have

a summer/fall season that oen peaks in September, and can be easily spread when you have close contact with an infected per

son. You can also get infected by touching objects or surfaces that have the virus on them then touching your mouth, nose or eyes,

the CDC (the US based Center for Disease Control and Prevenon) says.

EV D68 however is a rare virus. A peak has been noted in the past weeks in some hospitals in several states of the US, where EV

D68 caused a large percentage of respiratory complicaons in children, 6 weeks to 16 years of age, with symptoms of common

cold. Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of CDCs Naonal Center for Immunizaon and Respiratory Diseases said it was too early to say

whether the virus would spread to other states and how long the outbreak might last.

The CDC stated last Monday that none of the cases so far this year were fatal, nor did any result in paralysis, as far as the CDC

    knows.

Health officials note that there are no vaccines specifically formulated to prevent Enterovirus D68 or anviral drugs to treat it.

Affected children were receiving asthma medicaons, oxygen and intravenous fluids as needed, the Kansas City Star reported.

Schuchat stressed that one warning sign parents should look for in their children is difficulty breathing, which should prompt par

ents to seek immediate medical aenon.

It seems to produce illness with a more severe component (such as) difficulty breathing, Dr. William Schaffner, an infecous dis

eases expert at Vanderbilt University, told NBC News in a Monday report. But the vast majority of these kids will get beer.
