ERS Scientific Activities 2015/2016
FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMMES
The main objectives of the fellowship programmes are to:
support research training projects in respiratory medicine in Europe;
encourage the publication of scientific results in the ERJ or other suitable respiratory
journals (these articles would have to be reviewed and compete with other publications
and are subject to acceptance);
contribute to the development of new techniques in Europe, through research training;
encourage the exchange of knowledge between institutions;
raise the profile of the ERS in the international community.
The ERS rules and activities established around these fellowship programmes aim to:
provide a reasonable salary adapted to the fellow situation and to the host country;
ensure high quality of the work supported;
give priority to supervisors and fellows who are ERS Members;
highlight the work of fellows through the Association of ERS Fellows and the annual
Fellows’ Get Together event at Congress.
Programmes and deadlines:
Short-Term Research Training Fellowships: 1 April & 1 October
Long-Term Research Fellowships: 31 January
And many other fellowship programmes
More information on the fellowships programmes: http://www.ersnet.org/ers-funding/fellowships.html
Get involved: You can promote the ERS Fellowship Programmes in your workplace and encourage
young investigators to apply for a fellowship.
TASK FORCES AND GUIDELINES
Task Forces are ad hoc groups set up to address a specific issue in respiratory medicine. All ERS
members are eligible to apply for funding to set up an ERS Task Force. Any ERS Member may
propose a subject for a joint Task Force with one of the ERS Sister Societies.
Annual deadlines:
1 February (response in May of the same year)
1 June (response in October of the same year)
1 October (response in February of the following year)
More information for online application form: http://taskforces.ersnet.org/

Get involved: You can promote and spread the use of the ERS Guidelines and encourage your peers
to submit applications for Task Forces.
CLINICAL RESEARCH COLLABORATION
The European Respiratory Society (ERS) contributes to the coordination of activities in respiratory
medicine across Europe, by encouraging new initiatives, producing guidelines for European clinicians,
ERS Scientific Activities 2015/2016
supporting and disseminating information from industry-independent multi-centre clinical research
collaboration, developing joint documents with other major associations and/or international scientific
societies, and other research activities.
The ERS may support the work of a Clinical Research Collaboration (CRC) in areas of respiratory
medicine where a pan-European multi-centre network of principal investigators aims to advance
science and clinical research within a specific disease area. An ERS CRC offers an umbrella for a
network of researchers in a specific disease area, and may also integrate non-ERS members,
representing different scientific disciplines which complement the network with multidisciplinary and
multifunctional know-how and expertise.
Proposals for a CRC must be made by a group of members from one ERS assembly, or a group of
ERS members from several assemblies.
An original application form should be sent to the attention of the Chair of the Science Council and the
ERS scientific department ([email protected]). After reviewing, the proposals (and the budget, if a
financial request is made) will be considered at the next meeting of the Science Council. The CRC will
be approved once the Executive Committee has endorsed the recommendations of the Science
Council. The time taken for the approval procedure may vary, depending on the possible changes
requested by the Science Council.
Annual application deadline: 15 October (in 2015, the deadline is 30 October)
More information for online application form & guidelines: http://www.ersnet.org/ers-funding/clinical-
research-collaboration.html
The selected CRCs are:
International Collaboration to Improve Respiratory Health in Children (INCIRCLE)
European Multicentre Bronchiesctasis audit and Research Collaboration (EMBARC)
The European Network for ICU-related respiratory infections (ENIRRIs)
Tuberculosis Network European Trialsgroup (TBNET)
European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA)
LUNG SCIENCE CONFERENCE
The Lung Science Conference is a showcase for cutting-edge research and its translation into clinical
solutions. Its originality and success are based on facilitating dialogue between young scientists and
established investigators. The aims of the Conference are to:
Present the very best of international lung science research
Highlight new discoveries likely to have an impact on the future of respiratory medicine
Focus on key mechanisms in the pathogenesis of respiratory pathology
Encourage debate and interaction between young post-doctoral scientists and established
investigators through mentorship
Reward young scientists for excellence
Mentorship: Unique to the ERS Lung Science Conference, each applicant who receives a bursary is
appointed a mentor, a faculty or a member of the LSC Science Council with whom they can discuss
both scientific and career questions during a dedicated mentorship lunch on the first day of the
Conference, as well as during the numerous events, aiming to facilitate discussion and interaction
between the participants.

MEMBERS’ MEETINGS
Assemblies are at the heart of the ERS: they comprise international members with similar interests
within the broad field of respiratory medicine. It is through collecting, interpreting and disseminating
information that ERS Assemblies improve communication among their members. Assemblies are key
in the planning of the ERS International Congress and play a major role in creating and updating ERS
guidelines and statements.
During the Congress, ERS Members are strongly encouraged to attend the Members’ Meeting of their
chosen Group and/or Assembly. These meetings are an opportunity to learn about the subjects
currently under discussion in the field and how delegates can play an active role within the ERS.
Assembly Members’ Meeting
Assembly-related topics can be discussed. The agenda of the meeting is decided and chaired by the
respective Assembly Head and Assembly Secretary. The Assembly Head is expected to report back at
the Science Council meeting.
