Deborah MC Andrew, JCI Mayo President says, “We hope local ladies will get involved and show their support for their female counterparts around the world. There are thousands of unwanted bras that women have outgrown or got bored of, and we want to put them to good use.” She adds, “By donating old bras, people can help communities across the world in many practical ways and know that after the important support the bra has given them, it can go on to help someone else.” The ‘Bra Bank’ scheme is run by the Flamingo Foundation and each year around 20,000 bras are distributed. This includes to a community of ladies in Kisumu, Kenya – many of who are widowed having lost their husbands to HIV. Most work the land and care for their families without any physical support, so owning their own bra, or having the opportunity to set up a market stall using the bras as stock, is extremely welcome.Monica Keale explains, “The bras have given me the chance to stand on my own two feet. I have started my business and it helps me feed my family. The bras sell very well.”Rehema Keino “It’s so nice to think of another woman thousands of miles away supporting me!” JCI will be

collecting bras from 26th Sept – 28th Nov. Venus Beauty Clinic Belmullet 097 20923

"NORTH WEST SPCA Erris Branch. Hi folks, last april we were delighted to have a vet come to Belmullet every Monday and Thursday between the hours of 11.30 am and 2.30 pm. He has set up within the pet shop on American Street. Unfortunately, the pet shop closed down and moved on a few weeks ago, but Conal Finnerty of Skeldale veterinary clinic is still there, and you can reach him on 087 918 5350. He is a welcome service to the Erris area, and we, the Erris branch of North West SPCA use his services on a weekly basis. Skeldale also supply doses, and other medical products for cattle and sheep at very competitive prices. If you need help or advice with your pets, dogs cats or any animal, just give Conal a ring. Our aim is to rescue stray dogs and cats and unwanted pets, and we will do our best to help anyone who needs it. All enquiries can be made to 085 166 7171. We will return callls as soon as possible. Spaying and neutering is the best way to try and solve the problem of so many strays. Remember if we can help we will, but we must be told, and we emphasise, we are just volunteers. We don't get wages or expenses, and most of us are only able to help outside of our working hours. We are always on the lookout for anyone willing to volunteer and donations would be greatly appreciated, as the money goes to help local animals and pay the vets bill."

TEAM HOPE CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX APPEALIt is time once again for the Christmas shoebox appeal. For those who have never heard of it and would like to know. It is an opportunity to give a present for Christmas, in the way of a little shoebox full of gifts, to a child in another country.Children who are living on the margins of society, victims of war, disease or poverty, in some of the worlds most underdeveloped countries. For families living on less than 1 a day. Christmas is just like any other day, with not much hope for tomorrow. When you send a Team Hope Christmas Shoebox, you bring a little hope, some of Gods love and a lot of joy, smiles and laughter. It wont change everything, but it will do far more than we could ever imagine, by sharing Christmas with children who have never experienced anything like it before! If the local leader requests it, after the children receive their shoeboxes, Team Hope also gives a Christmas card explaining where their box has come from, they tell them about Ireland and the significance of the Christmas message (this can be read on the Team Hope website). For those who would like to take part, get a shoe box and wrap it in Christmas paper (wrap the lid separately). Choose whether youd like a boy or a girl to receive your box and what age. There are 3 age groups 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14years old. 10-14 boys boxes are always in short supply.Fill your box with gifts. You can enclose items like pens, pencils copybooks, colouring pencils and colouring books, erasers and sharpeners.Hygiene items - toothbrush and paste, soap, facecloth, hair brush or comb.Small clothing items like a hat, scarf, gloves, socks, underwear, or a t shirtA treat - toys, sunglasses, a game, small Irish gift, a photo of yourself, sweets (must be in date boiled sweets are best as chocolate may melt if it is going to a hot country), small musical instrument, a doll or cuddly toy, a car, skipping rope, or yo-yo.Please do not include any liquids as they can spill, anything breakable, scary things like haloween stuff, war related items (many of those children may be displaced due to war), books with words. To enable your box to be delivered, please enclose 4 for each box, put it into the enclosed envelope which is part of the shoe box leaflet. Place the envelope on top of the gifts in the box. Close your box with an elastic band, please do not seal it with tape, as it will be checked before it is sent. Finally stick the boy/girl sticker to the top of your box remembering to mark the appropriate age group, (the sticker is part of the leaflet). For the local drop off point for your box, or for a leaflet or further information please contact Agnes Togher at (097) 82319 or 0873252015.By participating in this project you could make a child very happy this Christmas.

Halloween TraditionsBlind Date: Blindfolded local girls would go out into the fields and pull up the first cabbage they could find. If their cabbage had a

substantial amount of earth attached to the roots then there future loved one would have money. Eating the cabbage would reveal the nature of their future husband - bitter or sweet! Another way of finding your future spouse is to peel an apple in one go. If done successfully the single apple peel could be dropped on the floor to reveal the initials of the future-intended. Anti-Fairy Measures: Fairies and goblins try to collect as many souls as they can at Halloween but if they met a person who threw the dust from under their feet at the Fairy then they would be obliged to release any souls that they held captive. Holy water was sometimes anointed on farm animals to keep them safe during the night. If the animals were showing signs of ill health on All Hallows Eve then they would be spat on to try to ward off any evil spirits.

IRISH HALLOWEEN TRADITIONS The Celts celebrated Halloween as Samhain, 'All Hallowtide' - the 'Feast of the Dead', when the dead revisited the mortal world. The celebration marked the end of Summer and the start of the Winter months.

During the eighth century the Catholic Church designated the first day of November as 'All Saints Day ('All Hallows') - a day of commemoration for those Saints that did not have a specific day of remembrance. The night before was known as 'All Hallows Eve' which, over time, became known as Halloween.

Here are the most notable Irish Halloween Traditions: Colcannon for Dinner: Boiled Potato, Curly Kale (a cabbage) and raw Onions are provided as the traditional Irish Halloween dinner. Clean coins are wrapped in baking paper and placed in the potato for children to find and keep. The Barnbrack Cake: The traditional Halloween cake in Ireland is the barnbrack which is a fruit bread. Each member of the family gets a slice. Great interest is taken in the outcome as there is a piece of rag, a coin and a ring in each cake. If you get the rag then your financial future is doubtful. If you get the coin then you can look forward to a prosperous year. Getting the ring is a

sure sign of impending romance or continued happiness. The Ivy Leaf: Each member of the family places a perfect ivy leaf into a cup of water and it is then left undisturbed overnight. If, in the morning, a leaf is still perfect and has not

developed any spots then the person who placed the leaf in the cup can be sure of 12 months health until the following Halloween. If not..... The Pumpkin: Carving Pumpkins dates back to the eighteenth century and to an Irish blacksmith named Jack who colluded with the Devil and was denied entry to Heaven. He was condemned to wander the earth but asked the Devil for some light. He was given a burning coal ember which he placed inside a turnip that he had gouged out. The tradition of Jack O'Lanterns was born - the bearer being the wandering blacksmith - a damned soul. Villagers in Ireland hoped that the lantern in their window would keep the wanderer away. When the Irish emigrated in millions to America there was not a great supply of turnips so pumpkins were used instead. Halloween Costumes: On Halloween night children would dress up in scary costumes and go house to house. 'Help the Halloween Party' and 'Trick or Treat' were the cries to be heard at each door. This tradition of wearing costumes also dates back to Celtic times. On the special night when the living and the dead were at their closest the Celtic Druids would dress up in elaborate costumes to disguise themselves as spirits and devils in case they encountered other devils and spirits during the night. By disguising they hoped that they would be able to avoid being carried away at the end of the night. This explains why witches, goblins and ghosts remain the most popular choices for the costumes. Snap Apple: After the visits to the neighbours the Halloween games begin, the most popular of which is Snap Apple. An apple is suspended from a string and children are blindfolded. The first child to get a decent bite of the apple gets to keep their prize. The same game can be played by placing apples in a basin of water and trying to get a grip on the apple without too much mess! The Bonfire: The Halloween bonfire is a tradition to encourage dreams of who your future husband or wife is going to be. The idea was to drop a cutting of your hair into the burning embers and then dream of you future loved one. Halloween was one of the Celt 'fire' celebrations.

Don't dismiss that one pound weight loss every week. Fourteen of them add up to one stone. Only 10 weeks until Christmas and you could be almost a stone lighter by losing that simple pound! One of them a week for one year would amount up to 3st 7lb.So don't delay any longer get to your Unislim class this week. We had a loss of 11st 11lb in our class last week so all those pounds do

count! Contact Maureen on 086 3132340 Class over Co-Op Wednesday 6.45 pm.

Spot the Turnstones! Can you see the turnstones? The turnstone is a bird that is often found along our rocky shoreline at Shore Road, Belmullet. They are mainly winter visitors and they are about the same size as starlings. Due to their appearance - dark brown upperparts, white underside and black breast crescent - they are very difficult to see amongst seaweed and rocks! But you will often hear them turning over the stones with their beaks. They usually occur in small flocks, moving with their heads down, constantly flicking over seaweed fronds, pebbles and beach debris, in search of sand hoppers and other invertebrates. Can you spot them in this photo taken on Shore Road? (There are two of them in this photo, but there are usually a lot more of them together.) see page 2 for answer,

Litter League Latest NewsBelmullet did not, unfortunately, reach the semi-final stage of the Mayo Co. Co. Litter Action League this year. We were in the league since April, and other towns in our category were: Crossmolina, Ballyhaunis, Newport, Foxford, Ballinrobe, Kiltimagh and Charlestown. Overall, we partook in seven matches – we won two of them and we lost five. It is unfortunate, but in relation to our Bin Your Butt campaign, there appears to be good news: in April’s judging, the amount of litter that contained cigarette butts was 83%; in May it was 64%; in June it was 75%; in July – 70%; in August – 73%; in the first half of September – 50%; and in the second half of September – 26%. It looks like cigarette-related litter may very well be decreasing! Or perhaps less people have been smoking outside, as the weather gets colder? Who knows? We hope it’s the former rather than the latter! Did you know that Belmullet won the Litter Action League in 2004 and 2005? Let’s aspire to do well in the next Litter Action League. Perhaps 2014 will be our year – if Mayo can aim for Sam again, surely we can do our best too!

Weather or Not! On a wet Friday evening, the 3 yard Slane Turf Cutting Competition took place in Kennedy’s bog, Seanvagroomeen at 5 o’clock. David Lennon had arrived the evening before to take the scraw off the bog in preparation. It was lashing rain and miserable. It seemed that all the work preparing for the 20th Anniversary of Crinnish Challenge weekend would be ruined by the bad weather. There was debate as to whether or not the turf cutting should be postponed to Sunday, but there was 2 GAA matches on Sunday and so Michael Gallagher, determined that the evening would not pass without some turf being cut hopped out of the jeep, grabbed his slane and went to work. A slane is a spade shaped to allow a sod of turf to be cut. Not that long ago all turf would have been cut by hand; nowadays very few people cut their turf with a slane although there are a few around Erris that still do it this way. The judges Peter Carey and Noel McLoughlin Sr. were in situ and a number of spectators stayed to watch this old skill in practice. Photographer Pete

Dexter captured the sods being flung over Michael’s shoulder. Judges would be looking for a clean, nicely shaped sod of turf, they would be inspecting the bog as to the condition it is left in as well. Michael Gallagher was named the champion slane turf cutter for 2013.

Be Safe…Be Secure…. The Importance of Life Cover In today’s challenging times being financially prepared for what’s around the corner is more important than ever before. Most of us know that we need to protect ourselves and our families against the financial hardship that could be caused due to an illness or death in a family. The main purpose of financial protection is to make sure that if a misfortune like an accident or illness happens in your family, you won't have any money problems. Basically, all protection policies are designed to replace lost income and provide a money benefit when it is needed most. This is most important when a death occurs in a family. It is good to know that your family won’t have to worry about money issues as well as deal with the stress and heartache that a death brings to a family. “We want to provide our clients with the best options available in the market at any time” says Tom Connolly, director. “Most of us shop around for the best deal on our house and car insurance, but don’t realise we can shop around for the best life or serious illness quotation also”. Established in 2003, M&C Financial Services have gone from strength to strength, offering a wide range of services, including Life Assurance, Pensions, Savings, Investments as well as all types of Insurance. The cost of Life cover has fallen over the last few years, so you may find that you are currently paying too much for your current cover. Perhaps your mortgage has reduced significantly which means your mortgage protection policy could also be reduced or you may have given up smoking and therefore may now qualify for non smoker rates………so instead of simply accepting the renewal quote from your existing insurer, we can show you ways of saving on your premiums. Hence it is advisable to shop around for life cover and to review your existing policies on a regular basis. If you already have cover and want to know if you are paying too much, then it’s easy to switch and save, just give us a call today for a quotation on 094-9020677. Céad Míle Fáilte i Maigh Eo Mayo is set to extend a Céad Míle Fáilte to members of Gaeltacht Thuaisceart an Oileáin Úir – The North American Gaeltacht. Organised to mark the Gathering and Bliain na Gaeilge, almost 30 American and Canadian Gaeilgeoirs will arrive on October 20th for an action packed five days, filled with with language, music and dance workshops, as well as offering them a chance to soak up the phenomonal scenery Mayo has to offer. Tóstal Mhaigh Eo is organised by Conradh na Gaeilge and Comhaltas Mhaigh Eo in conjunction with Mayo County Council. The Tóstal will take them from Tuar Mhic Éadaigh to Achill Island, and from Ceathrú Thaidhg to Eachléim. The Gathering will commence in Halla Thuar Mhic Éadaigh on Sun, 20th Oct at 4.00 p. m with an Éigse Drámaíochta with Aisteoirí Chorr na Móna and Máirtín Mac Donnacha. Aindrias de Staic agus Na Latchikos will present “Fear Feasa Mhoogaga”, a new show about a reclusive ceolán whose music helps his local club break the curse and win the cup at 8.00 p. m in Máire Luke’s, followed by music and song with Ceol na Locha. The following morning there will be a guided tour of Drimbawn House Gardens after which the visitors will set out for Achill. Óstán Gielty is the venue that night for music, song, dance, and storytelling featuring Scoil Acla. Tues, 22nd Oct will see muintir Cheanada partake in a workshop on Achill Irish facilitated by Seán Mhaidhcí Ó Gallachóir. After the workshop Seán will take them on a tour of the Deserted Village, at the foot of Sliabh Mór which was abandoned in the 19th Century. This will be followed by a visit to Ballycroy National Park. The day’s events will conclude with a session of music, song and dance featuring the cream of Erris talent in Teach Chonghóile, Ceathrú na gCloch. Eachléim, on the Mullet peninsula, takes centre stage on Wednesday, 23rd Oct. There will be a visit to Turas Siar, An Chartúr, followed by a visit to Ionad Deirbhile and a guided tour of Deirbhile’s Loop. Clann Lir Comhaltas Branch will provide the entertainment that night at 7.00 p. m, in Teach Úna in Blacksod. Uinsíonn Mac Graith will deliver a presentation and guided walk focussing on the placenamesof Dún Chaocháin on Thursday morning. Mayo County Council will host a Civic Reception in Áras an Chontae in Castlebar that evening in honour of the North American Gaeltacht. The day’s events will conclude with an evening of music, song and dance featuring some of Mayo’s finest artists. Guest of Honour for the evening will be Senator Labhrás Ó Murchú, Ard-Stiúrthóir, Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. The Gathering will conclude on Friday, 25th Oct with a visit to the national Museum of Ireland in Turlough and then on to Ballina to visit the Jackie Clarke Museum which boasts over 100,000 items spanning 400 yrs of Irish History including the Douglas Hyde Collection. All of the events are open to the public and everybody is invited to come along and join Tóstal Mhaigh Eo. There is no charge for any of the events. This is an opportunity for those with the cúpla focal, or no Gaeilge at all, to come along and join the fun. Conradh na Gaeilge and the Mayo branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, in conjunction with Mayo County Council, are leaving no sod unturned in an effort to ensure that Tóstal Mhaigh Eo will be an unforgettable event.
