Almost half of Erko apartments have now joined the food scraps trial Last week, City of Sydney Council collected 2.78 tonnes of food scraps from participating apartments and houses. The facility that processes our food scraps is an anaerobic digestion facility and it produces bio gas and organic sludge from our scraps. The gas is converted to green electricity and the sludge becomes fertiliser for gardens and farms. The name of the facility is EarthPower If there are any Erko residents who would still like to join the program, register at cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/foodscraps. There is a limit of one caddy per household/apartment and duplicate orders will not be fulfilled. But having achieved this, why not go one step further and swap the plastic bags that your garbage goes in, to biodegradable and compostable bags. Bin liners, kitty litter, car crap are all areas where many households use plastic that could be switched to biodegradable. Anywhere we can stop putting plastic into landfill has got to be a win for the planet. Erko from above

Strata Committee Secretary Lindy shot this photo from the window of her Boeing as she flew back into Sydney recently. In evidence opposite Erskineville Oval are the twin tower cranes of Sydney Park as construction of the Cascade building has now emerged from the ground. Also very much in evidence are the two large sheds in the south-east corner of the site. By 2025, we’re told that the Ashmore Precinct will be home to 6,000 residents.

Erskineville History Talk

Join local historian Craig Wilcox, author Matt Murphy, local blogger Michael Halloran and Sean Macken as they discuss how Erskineville became the place it is today. From the earliest days of white settlement to the present, they explore how people once lived, loved, suffered and thrived in the place we now call home.

11.00am, Lucy Woodcroft Hall, Erko School, Saturday 31st August.

This is free community event organised by the Erskineville Branch of the ALP.

What Will You Borrow?

The long-awaited Gather Library of Things gathers pace with work nearly complete on the software which will allow access to the library. The way it will work is that you will select the item you want to borrow: a pressure cleaner, a pressure cooker etc, and “book” it using the app. The app will then send you a code so that you can unlock the library and borrow the item. Returning it will work in the same way. We’re just waiting now for the Owners Corporation to approve the expenditure on the storage cage and for Gather to iron a couple of last-minute bugs from the software.
