DETAILS OF UNPUBLISHED WORK AND CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS Unpublished book manuscripts: 3 Erika Simpson, Nuclear Insecurity OR Nuclear weapons and NATO 1995-2015: Is it safer to deter or to disarm? (sole-authored book in progress so research is done & writing is in progress): The manuscript of a 350-page book Nuclear weapons and NATO 1995-2015: Is it safer to deter or to disarm? is nearly complete. The book will contribute theoretically and empirically to our understanding of North American and European defence policy between 1995 and 2015. Empirically, the book addresses gaps in the literature about NATO’s nuclear policy. It describes NATO’s continued emphasis in the Strategic Concept upon retaining nuclear weapons as sacrosanct. And it explains the role of prominent individuals, NGOs and groups of like-minded states in failing to change longstanding nuclear policy. Therefore the book will be useful for contributing to debates and mobilizing knowledge about negotiations between 2015-20 culminating in NATO’s 70th anniversary in 2019 and the UN’s 2020 NPT Review Conference. Due to organizing, chairing and participating in many policy discussions between 1995 and 2015, the book will help explain NATO’s reasons for retaining its emphasis on nuclear weapons and the different efforts of various regional coalitions, states and individuals to transform traditional nuclear strategy. research project promises to inform and advance theory, methods and research agendas concerning NATO’s and the NPT’s nuclear policies between 1995 and 2015. As the final product of many interviews of policy-makers and research trips, the book includes research and interviews conducted in Berlin (2011), Brussels at NATO Headquarters (1991, 2002, 2006, 2011); Ottawa (2009, 2010, 2014); Toronto (2010); Vienna and New York City at the NPT PrepComs (2012, 2014) and New York City during the NPT Review Conferences (2010, 2015). The manuscript should be ready for publication in time for the NPT’s preparatory committee meetings between 2017-2020, NATO’s 70th anniversary in 2019 and the NPT Review Conference in 2020. Erika Simpson, NATO at 70:1949-2019 (sole-authored book so research is done and writing is not done): This book analyses defence decision-making over the last seventy years using a perspective embedded in peace research, particularly critical security studies. It analyses defence policy within NATO circles, beginning with NATO’s inception in 1949 and ending with its 70th birthday in 2019. It uses many documents that were accessed utilizing Canada’s thirty- and twenty-year rules and interviews of Canadian and NATO decision- makers as well as restricted documents. NATO celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2019 so the book should be complete in 2020. Erika Simpson, Canada in an Insecure World (sole authored book, final book manuscript is nearly done, it will be approx 350 pp.) This book will explain many Canadian security-related issues between 1945-2017 including how Canada takes a liberal internationalist perspective in global negotiations concerning North American security policy. It asks whether realist, liberal internationalist or critical perspectives are useful in terms of understanding past decisions and crises – and it suggests a variety of different policy options relevant to academics, diplomats and global citizens.
