Erik Erickson’s 2nd Psychosocial Stage

1
Erik Erickson’s 2 nd psychosocial stage, autonomy v. shame and doubt, is one that occurs during the early stages of childhood. Its main focus is children developing a greater more stable sense of personal control. At this specific point in a child’s life they’re starting to have the ability to perform basic actions on their own and acquire a sense of independence. Success in this area of life with support from a caregiver can give a child a sense of autonomy while those who are not successful are left with a sense of inadequacy and shame and doubt. An example of this and one of the earliest actions that display independence and require help from a caretaker to be successful is potty training.
