A system for s izing
and/or concentrating
minerals in slurry
form having variouspart icle size and
density distributions.
High Capacity Classifier
NEWOnly from Erie
Eriez CrossFlow Separator is a highlyefficient hydraulic classifier for the
separation of finely sized materialbased on particle size and/or density.
The hinderedbed concentration method
used in the CrossFlow Separator
provides an economical and efficient
means of sizing material such as sand
and phosphate. Additionally, ores
containing a mixture of high and low
density components can be readily
upgraded based on the difference in
specific gravity. Examples include iron
ore and heavy mineral sands with silica
contamination and runofmine coalcontaining various ashforming
components such as rock and pyrite.
BENEFITS
High capacity (3-9 tph/ft2)
Precise, efficient classification
CrossFlow design eliminates efficiency
losses due to feed water
Easy, online cutpoint control
Fullyautomated discharge controlsystem

PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
The Eriez CrossFlow Separator uses a
unique tangential feed system to
introduce a mineral slurry that contains
particles of various size and density
into the top of the separation chamber. This novel approach provides capaci-
ties up to three times that of a conven-
tional hydraulic classifier and elimi-
nates errors associated with the
introduction of excess feed water.
Feed particles descend against a rising
flow of teeter water established by a
uniform system of water injection pipes
located in the base of the main separa-
tion housing. Based on the water
addition rate, a fluidized bed of solids
is established in the separator. Par-ticles with a low settling velocity are
carried over the top of the separator
with the fluidizing water. Likewise,
particles that have a density lower than
the teetering bed of solids cannot
penetrate the bed and will also report to
the overflow. High settling rate
particles pass through the teeter bed
into the dewatering cone and are
eventually discharged through the
underflow valve.
Particle size and/or density cutpoint
is controlled by adjustment of the
water flow rate and the level of the
teeter bed. The teeter water addition
and level control systems are fully
instrumented. The underflow dis-
charge rate is regulated using an
automated electronic control system
consisting of a pressure gauge, PID
loop controller and pneumatically
actuated control valve.
CrossFlow Separator
The Eriez CrossFlow Separator consists
of a tangential feed system, main housing
(separation zone and dewatering cone),
product collection launder, water injection
system and process control system.
