Interview Information

• Q: Have you earned any licenses or certifications such as Professional Engineer, Black Belt, etc.?

• A: No, but I am considering taking the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE).

• Q: Did you pursue a master’s degree after graduation?

• A: I will begin my graduate studies this summer with Dr. Burtner. If you intend to advance beyond a mid-level management position, a master’s degree is essential.

• Q: What is your routine on a normal work day?

• A: I sign in at 8am and first deal with all correspondence (email, phone calls). Then I take a walk outside for exercise before it gets too hot, head to lunch, and spend the rest of the work day going to meetings, conference calls, and visiting local contractors. I usually go home by 4:30pm everyday.

• Q: What skills would you say are essential to your job?

• A: Writing is the most important part. Technical and Legal writing are very important, as well as being able to use Microsoft Office products. Having patience and a solid mechanical inclination is also required.

• Q: How often do you interact with people outside of the engineering world?

• A: Very often. I consider myself a conduit between the engineering world and reality. I provide a means for the two to communicate.

• Q: Do you usually work in groups or alone?

• A: Mostly alone, but I am part of a small group that shares proof reading duties for one another. Sometimes we have lunch together, and I’ve tried to get them to join me on my walk routine, but they are kind of a lazy bunch.

• Q: What is a stressful aspect of your job and what is a satisfying aspect of your job?

• A: It is stressful getting into technically obscure arguments with management, but it is also satisfying winning technically obscure arguments with management.

• Q: What made you choose your specialty in the engineering field?

• A: I love machines, and I love people. I think that there is a right and a wrong way for the two to be together.

• Q: Which classes that you took in college have proven most helpful on your job?

• A: My minor in philosophy has proven to be invaluable. In those classes I learned to write and to construct an argument. It is a skill set slowly disappearing in our society.

• Q: Which classes were least helpful?

• A: “Principles of Art. I was cutting strips of white paper and gluing them onto a sheet of black paper when it suddenly occurred to me that I didn’t care. I dropped it…”
