MARCH 2013 COTSWOLD STYLE 76 COTSWOLD STYLE MARCH 2013
Clouds are wonderful things. Unless ofcourse one of them lets go with the oldh2o and you’re bereft of an umbrella orin the nude. William Wordsworth in1804 had a few poignant, wandering, lonely scribbles on that very subject. Notthe nudity… the clouds! I’m stilllandlocked in the blissful ignorance of acloudless World. Not so the IT gurus oftoday’s business milieu. Computers nowfeel like the norm in the workplace. Itmakes us wonder what we did beforecomputers. It feels natural to work at acomputer because it blends into the
business lifestyle. A scrap of paper and abiro isn’t going to cut it. When was thelast time you watched somebody writinga letter with a pen? The invoices, letters, confidential documents, receipts andmore can be done in less time thandoing it manually. It’s true to say we livein an immediate World.
In the damp, soggy fog that canenvelope any companies’ IT strategythere is always a ray of sunshine, hopeand help to burst the clouds ofconfusion that still shroud somecompanies IT planning and spend.
Roger White and his team of cloud-busters at SSL (Severnside SoftwareLimited) are keen to point out that withsome forward planning and the right
approach it’s not all doom and gloomand you can easily avoid problemsbefore the ‘bugs bite’ or you irrevocablywatch your company grinding to an IT-led gridlock. Roger White says,‘companies need to keep their ITstrategy and planning up to date andmore importantly plan for the futureexpansion of their operation’. Never atruer word said. Talk to any entrepreneurand they’ll openly admit to wanting theirown business embryo to be becomebigger, stronger, increasingly efficientand more profitable. Its common senseto want growth and IT plays a huge partto not only the forward planning, but thesmooth day - to - day running of anycompany. Just think of your emails
Starker’s in the rain?Not likely…
going into meltdown or all your salesrecords or invoices disappearing into toa deep, awful void never to be seenagain. Roger goes on to further say,’ it’scrucial that companies get a handle ontheir IT strategy and likely needs in boththe medium and long-term. At SSLproviding the key advice on this veryarea of 24/7 IT support is one of ourreal strengths. We don’t want companiesto be out in the proverbial rain withoutany cover or support’.
Computers have indeed transformedthe workplace and workplace mobilitywill be the next revolution to impactcorporate Britain as emergingtechnologies continue to enable andpower our daily work lives.
Roger White comments, ‘the growthand emergence of the Cloud andnetworking are now becomingindispensable to more and morecompanies and individuals alike’.Another important growth sector withinthe computing world will be thecontinuing rise of Big Data. Accordingto analysts, there will be countlessopportunities for the creation of newbusinesses to crunch the massive amountof information being generated everyday by companies which is simply too bigto store and analyse in house. Againthat’s where Roger White and the ‘cloudbusters’ come in at SSL; giving straighthonest easy to understand advice thathelps crystallise your way forward. It’s ascary reality that if you don’t keep upwith this stuff then your company couldbe affected and you could easily founderon the shoals of indifference.
Roger White is very emphatic when hesays, ‘I don’t want any of our existing orpotentially new customers to get boggeddown in the IT maelstroms that caneasily develop through either acceptingthe status quo or indeed being illinformed’. There’s and old adage thatsays people get bored, people getheadaches…computers don’t. Companieslike SSL are at the technological coalfacewhen it comes to identifying not onlyproblems but solutions.
Like the ‘march of the penguins,’ thegrowth of office based technology isbecoming inevitable and ever - morecrucial to the every day operation of
even the smallest companies. When man went to the moon the
Apollo spacecraft computer only had 1kof memory. It is now predicted thatwithin the next forty year span one£1,000 computer will be more intelligentthan the entire human race. That’sbonkers. Within fifteen years, one singlecomputer will be smarter than theaverage human being, or somebody fromsome god forsaken mid – American in-bred backwater. Within five years, onecomputer will have the brainpower of amouse (of the animal variety) andArtificial Intelligence will have officiallyoutsmarted all of humanity. The stellarmoment in time at which computers‘outsmart’ humanity is known as the‘singularity.’ Computers are alreadyacquiring the ability to learn from pastevents and mistakes, and after thesingularity, they will be better at doing so
than any human being on earth. Thiscoming paradigm shift leads us down oneof two paths: One embracingtechnological progress and one rejectingit. Scary stuff. Roger White finallycomments with a sage of friendly advice,‘as a company don’t get left behind withany of these advances and certainly don’tbe left naked or exposed.with your ITplanning or current needs’.
Roger White and the SSL team arealways on hand to help with strategy, planning and support. It’s soothing toknow they’re just a call away and canadminister the complete 24/7 supportand planning package that could justmake the difference. Remember evenpoets use computers, starker’s or not!
