BACK SUPPORT

Good posture is essential. Use a back & foot supportwhile seated to achieve the best working position.

Know your ergonomic working zonesYou can reduce your risk of musculoskeletal injury simply by arranging the equipment on your desk into zones.

Secondary working zoneThe secondary working zone is the area on your desk

that you can reach with your back still in contact with the back rest and your arms extended.

Non-working zoneAnything positioned on your desk outside of the primary

and secondary zones can encourage leaning and reaching, which can increase the risk of repetitive awkward

movements that may lead to discomfort. Either bring that item closer, or stand up and move to it to retrieve it.

Primary working zoneThe primary working zone is the area on your desk that you can comfortably reach when sitting fully back in your chair with your elbows relaxed by your sides.

Support your wrists and forearms, keep them flatand ensure your elbows are level with the surface of your desk.

Reaching forward or to the sideWhenever you reach forward or to the side, you increase work in the muscles

around the shoulder and neck, which can lead to fatigue and pain.

It’s important to work with your upper arms relaxed and close to your body. Make sure your forearm isn’t jutting out at an angle to move your mouse

around, as this will rotate the humerus outwards in the shoulder joint, creating tension and imbalance if this becomes habitual.

Try this…Use a compact keyboard

to allow more space to position

your mouse

For correct posture and comfortable viewing, ensure the top of your monitor is at eye-level.

Incorrect laptop useYou should not use a laptop on its own (without ergonomic equipment) for

prolonged periods, especially if you are inputting. The low position of a laptop can encourage you to bend your neck forwards and hunch your shoulders. Use of the

touchpad can also create awkward movements, and is not very efficient.

Using an adjustable laptop/tablet stand

Using a detachable mouse and

keyboard

Repetitive or awkward head movements

Glancing repetitively between your screen and documents laid out on your desk can lead to aches and pains. Avoid placing documents in front of the

keyboard, as this will cause you to reach to type, creating tension in the shoulders, upper back and neck.

Using multiple monitors also increases the risk of head movements as you may find yourself turning your head repetitively to view data between the screens.

Try this…

An adjustable document holder positioned close to the monitor

to reduce head movements.

If one screen is used more, place this in front of you with a reference screen as close as possible and in line with it.

Clamping phone between ear and shoulderA very bad habit commonly seen in offices as people attempt to

multitask while on the phone. It causes pain and tension in the neck and shoulders and should be avoided.

Try this…

• Invest in a headset so you can talk hands-free

• Better yet, invest in a wireless headset so you can move around

Page 14: ERGONOMICS CATALOGUE · 4.12.2019  · Good posture is essential. Use a back & foot support while seated to achieve the best working position. Know your ergonomic working zones You

Not moving enoughRegardless of how suitable your workstation is, remember to get up, walk

around and try some neck and shoulder stretches frequently throughout the day.

Try this…

Neck tilt

• Drop head slowly to one side, taking ear towards shoulder until stretch is felt

• Hold for slow count of 10

• Repeat 3-5 times

Shoulder stretch

• Raise shoulders towards ears until slight tension felt across tops of shoulders

• Hold for slow count of 10

• Repeat 3-5 times

Shoulder roll

• Sit with back supported

• Slowly roll shoulders up and backwards in circular motion

• Repeat 10 times

Tech neck andhow to avoid it

How much do we use our phoneson average each day?

What is this doing to our bodies?Phones and tablets are handheld. This means that we often need to hang our heads forward

to see the screens. The further forward the head hangs, the greater the pressure on the spine.

This position puts a large amount of strain on joints, discs and muscles in the neck and back. If maintained for long periods of time, it can lead to:

Upper back acheSharp, severe upper back muscle spasms

Shoulder painTightness

Cervical nerve pinching pain Neurological symptoms radiating down arms and into hands

How can we reduce the risk of tech neck?By changing our habits

Short of throwing your phone into the sea andrenouncing technology forever, try this:

Ban phone or tablet

at certain times i.e. before bed

Use an adjustable phone or tablet

holder/stand to bring to eye height

Make calls instead of

texting

Avoid lengthy input periods

Use laptop or desktop

computer for processing tasks

Neck twist• Sit or stand

upright• Without lifting chin,

twist head to look over your shoulder

• Hold for slow count of 10

• Repeat 3-5 times

Teens and young adults (aged 15-24)

4 hours(240 minutes)

Adults

3 hours 49 minutes (229 minutes)

In 1 year, a young adult will spend 60 full days looking at their phone or tablet. An adult will spend 58.

Personal stories

Back pain can make you feel old at 21 Back pain during pregnancy

Except now I couldn’t move. Even lifting my arm or turning my head slightly would send intense, nauseating pain from the top of my sciatic nerve (the biggest nerve in the body). I imagined that I’d spend a few days housebound hobbling about feeling sorry for myself.

In fact it stayed for twelve months. I spent my entire twenty-first year of life - an iconic year, a coming-of-age-year, the first step into the exciting world of adulthood - in constant, silent, lonely agony.

Being immobile

The excitement of moving out, starting my first job and making a life in a brand new place was blighted by constant pain. I was fresh and ambitious.I still believe it was the exercise that healed me (or was it the fear of long needles?).I'm more careful with exercise - I focus on cardio and core strength, and keep my routine variedI am lucky enough to work for a company that understands the impact of pain. We have sit-stand desks, walking meetings and great advice sheets. We also have DSE assessments on tap and the best ergonomic equipment money can buy.

I was lucky. Millions of Brits are still in pain every single day, struggling through work or unable even to make it to work. Maybe you’re one of them?

It’s our job to encourage employers to not just fulfill their duties under DSE regs but to go above and beyond to protect their employees. Not only does a good health, safety and wellbeing strategy keep employees happy, healthy and productive at work, but it also fosters greater loyalty and effort.

It all began with a sneeze

It happened when I sneezed in bed whilst reaching to turn my alarm off for work one morning.

Sadly, I was unable to lie correctly to see scans of my baby due to the pain. so pain really does affect people mentally as well as physically.

Working for Posturite is the first job that has fully catered to my needs for my back and that I am very grateful for."

When an employee suffers back pain at work, it's important to make reasonable adjustments to help them get on with their tasks as comfortably as possible.
