From throwing punchesat a dusty gym in an ob-scure village in Harya-na, Vijender Kumar

achieved something so re-markable that he sometimesblinks twice before the enor-

mity of an Olympic bronze sinks in.Since the late 1990s, Indian boxing had taken an upward

swing and players like Dingko Singh and Ali Quamar did thecountry proud by winning medals at the Asian Games and Com-monwealth and other international meets. But an Olympic med-al was always elusive.

Vijenders first tryst at the Summer Games in Athens in 2004was disappointing as he was knocked out in the first round. And

although his form before the Games in Beijing held much prom-ise, there was still doubt as Indians are always known to havechocked at the biggest stage. The boxers were no different.

With fellow boxers Akhil Kumar and Jitender Kumar falling flatat the quarterfinals level, it was left to Vijender to break themyth.

All of us expected Akhil to win; he was at his peak. It was a bigdisappointment and there was pressure on me. But we were veryunited as a team and all were egging me to go out and give mybest. So there was also some added pressure, Vijender recalls.

However, taking on Carlos Gongora of Ecuador in the lasteight, the Indian boxer had a perfect bout downing his opponent9-4. I had a chat with myself just before entering the ring and Ifelt a lot more confident. I told my coach Dont worry. I will pullthis one. We had already discussed a plan and I knew I just hadto stick to it, he recalls.

Vijender was right on top from the word go and took the firstround 2-0 and the second 2-1. The first two rounds had set thematch as I had the lead. Carlos was left with no option but to

come after me, Vijender says. I just had to keep my composureand continue evading. I just tried to stay away from his punchesin the last round and the bout was won.
