Engineering Research and Development for Technology

Research and Development

• A consortium of 8 universities offering mature engineering programs

• Funding from DOST

ERDT Components

ERDT

HRD

Addresses the need to produce

well-trained engineering researchers

through advanced training

R&D

Addresses the lack of quantity and

quality of research in engineering

INFRASTRUCTURE

Creates an environment to

stimulate & support multi-

disciplinary academic and

research pursuits

Research & Development (R&D)

• Is a consortium-wide activity where multidisciplinary research programs that have immediate impact are prioritized

• Multidisciplinary research encourages collaborative effort among researchers from different disciplines in engineering, the sciences, and social sciences

• Is a vehicle established to advance engineering research in the country where R&D projects are aligned with the national research agenda

R&D

• Provides opportunities to ERDT scholars to participate and work on high-impact projects related to their theses and dissertations

• Promotes research works of students to be aligned to the National Science and Technology Plan and the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan ensuring that the research conducted are relevant and transferrable for the country’s benefit

Brief History (R&D)

OCTOBER 2007

• Prior to the submission of proposals, a roundtable discussion with participants from the academe, government and industry was conducted

2008

• As a result of the discussion, the ERDT consortium was able to submit 153 research proposals

• The total cost of the proposed research projects was roughly P637 Million

• Of the 153 submitted proposals, only 41 were approved for funding in the amount of P 175.34 Million

2009

• A number of proposals returned to proponents were revised and resubmitted in 2009

• 50 research proposals were submitted but only 2 were approved with a budget of P 26.86 million

Brief History (R&D)

2010

• 24 research proposals have been submitted of which 2 have already been approved with funding totalling P 30.6 Million

9 APRIL 2010

• PAC decided to adopt new guidelines in the submission of capsule and full proposals

• The significant difference from the previous guidelines is the empowering of R&D tracks in evaluating capsule proposals from proponents

• If the proposals pass the R&D criteria set by the tracks, a full blown proposal can be submitted to DOST for final approval

2011 to Present

• Proposals are submitted directly to DOST (e.g. PCIEERD, PCHRD, PCAARRD)

• No dedicated funding for ERDT. Proposals for ERDT compete with other proposals submitted to DOST.

The Challenge to ERDT R&D

To enable:

• efficient and effective delivery of services

• production of competitive, differentiated products, processes and systems

through research & development of technology

Some ERDT Success stories

RxBox: built-in medical sensors (BP,

blood O2, contraction strengths, electrocardiogram, fetal heart monitor for

remote consultations with specialists

Cyanide- and mercury-free gold extraction: to

serve more than 400k artisanal & small-scale miners.

Pectin from mango peels: Import substitution for the food industry, waste utilization

We would like to see more success stories…
