DTC-APRV-045 , DETONATING CORD 1 . 4S
Submitted by : Owen Oil Tools LP
P . O. Box 40 150
Fort Worth, TX 76140-0150
For : Classification .
At the request of Owen Oil Tools LP , the Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory tested four samples of packaged detonating cord at CANMET Bells Corners Complex, Nepean, Ontario and CFB Petawawa , Ontario. The samples were received in good condition on September 27 and April 25 , 2003. The tests detailed in the attached Reports of Properties were carried out between January 7 and June 20 , 2003 . The samples tested were :
Detonating cord HMX 80 gnlft DET-0 412-007 Detonating cord RDX 80 gnlft DET-0325 - 001 Detonating cord RDX 25 gn/ft DET-0325 - 007 Detonating cord RDX 80 gnlft DET-0325-0 01A
Tests from Series 6 fr om the " UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods - Manual of Tests and Criteria , " were performed on the packaged detonating cord . Based on the results of the tests , the DTC-APRV-045 , DETONATING CORD 1 .4 S " family " (including RDX , HMX and less sensitive explosives , 25 to 80 gn/ft) of cords is recommended for transport with the classification given in this report when packaged in the special packagings .
The results in this report relate onl y to the samples supplied. This report shall not be reproduced except in full , without the written approval of the Manager of the Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory .

External Fire Test - UN6(c):
Test configuration: Three packages (volume 0.35 m3) were placed on a steel grate 1 m high. Wood pallets were stacked below the packages to a height of 1 m and extending outwards from the packages to a distance of at least 1 m in all directions. The pallets were covered with wood shavings and doused with 32 L of kerosene. Witness panels (2 mm thick Al 1100-0, >2 m by >2 m) were placed in each of 3 quadrants 4 m from the packages. The fire was remotely ignited with 2 igniters (electric igniter with igniter cord) placed at two separate positions in the wood. The reaction was observed and recorded on video.
Number of packages: 3 Vol per pkg (m3): 0.11 7 Total vol of packages (m3): 0.351
Mass of energetic mat per pkg: Total mass (kg):
Sample preparation: As received. Boxes placed on ends side by side.
Narrative description: The fire was ignited at 11:40. After 60 seconds, the sample was engulfed in flames. The maximum intensity of the fire (from visual observation) was approximately 5 min after ignition. After 15 min, the fire was low but the sample was still burning. Fire was out after 25 min. No explosions, jets of flame, balls of fire or projections were noted from the video or the inspection of the site after completion of the test.
Observations relative to 1.1 criteria:
Observation of blast: None
Measurement of blast: N/A
Observations relative to 1.2 criteria:
Perforation of witness panels: None
Metallic projections - >20J or >25 g thrown None > 50 m or >150 g thrown >15 m:
Observations relative to 1.3 criteria

Fiery projections >15m:

Observations relative to 1.4 criteria

Indentations of witness panel with depth > None 4 mm:

Result: No mass explosion, no hazardous projections, no hazardous thermal effects.
Series 6 assessment: Division 1.4, other than Compatibility Group 5
Comments and It was difficult to determint the start and stop of the buring of the deviations: cord, since the flames of the fire obscured the flame from the cord, but
is concluded that the burning time was longer than the extrapolated 1.45 criterion for 7.7 kg of explosives (86 s).

Disposal:
The tests on samples X001781, X001882, X001784 and X001962 were carried out as part of the test plan recommend a classification on a family of detonating cords in special packagings designed to "cut-off" a detonation in the case of an accidental initiation during transport.
The results of the UN Series 6 tests and an unconfined package test were consistent with assignment to Division 1.4, Compatibility Group S.
The Stack Tests were waived on the basis of the Single Package Test results. Tests from Series 4 were not conducted since the products have already been approved or authorized for transport.
Recommended classification:
Shipping name: Identification number: Division/Compatibility Group: Packing group: Packing instruction:
Articles, explosive, n.o.s. UN 0349 1. 4S II 101
Specific requirement for inclusion in approval by Competent Authority:
Outer packaging: Intermediate packaging: Inner packaging:
Other:
CIE 10331 to 10334
Fibreboard box, UN 4G Fibreboard pads Styrofoam trays, six per outer packaging, slotted to allow up to 500 feet continuous length of detonating cord to be laced into the slots of the trays. A reel is included in the package so that the recipient can spool the cord on receipt.
