PART IProject Title: Erase E-waste: A Sustainable Electronic Waste Recycling Project

Project Description:Erase E-waste is a two phase project. Phase I will include an orientation to be attended by the student body of the College of Science within the entire second month of the next semester to ensure all classes will be part of the orientation. The orientation will include an overview of the project mechanism; a talk on proper management of electronic waste, and the importance of our role as students in the task of preserving our beautiful land. The introduction will be given by the project proponents of Erase E-waste, and the talk itself will be given by a speaker from DENR c/o by our partner, the Envirocycle Philippines, Inc. Phase II will come after the completion of the orientation. Every student of the College of Science is now expected to be aware of the importance of this project and the role they have to partake. With the help of the local student council of Science, a bin designed particularly for electronic waste, divided into: batteries, wires, laptops and PCs, and others (such as non-ferrous metals) will be set in the third floor of the Main building of UST. Students can now drop their electronic waste into the designated division. Collection by Envirocycle Philippines, Inc. will be done every two months, or as soon as the bin has reached maximum capacity.

Project Rationale:Electronic waste is increasing two to three times faster than any other waste material. In Metro Manila, it is recorded that an average of three cellular phone units, two television sets, one refrigerator is found in every household. Cellphones and computers, instead of discarding them, people tend to hang on to them thinking it is still valuable. They end up stored and forgotten in homes. And when people do discard them, they treat it as regular waste. This should not be the case because e-wastes are non-traditional waste and need special handlingOur goal is to assure no potentially polluting electronic equipment is deposited into landfill. We believe it should be re-used or recycled through fully licensed and accredited channels. Our partner, the Envirocycle Inc. established in Laguna, is the only full-service environmental processor of electronic waste in the Philippines being equipped to handle virtually all types of electronic waste streams. They are accredited by the DENR as a Treatment, Storage and Disposal (TSD) Facility capable of handling not just e-waste but a variety of other hazardous waste i.e. CRTs, busted fluorescent lamps (BFLs), used lead-acid batteries (ULABs), ink toners and cartridges, used oil, contaminated containers, solder dross, solder paste, and more. Personnel involved in transporting hazardous waste undergo training with the DENR and are duly accredited. Transport vehicles are likewise registered with the DENR.Envirocycle is more than just willing to help out students of the College of Science to discard their e-waste properly. According to them, they would provide us with speakers from DENR and collect our e-waste straight from UST and bring them to Laguna to ensure proper waste management of our electronic waste. Not only will they collect, they will also pay for our e-waste! *All income will go straight to the CSSC
