EMERALD RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL

Building Champions First

COMMITMENT TO EMERALD RIDGE FOOTBALL

“The rewards of commitment do not come instantaneously, but the rewards come after a lot of sacrifice, effort, disappointment, and heartache; however, the real rewards for commitment will last a lifetime.”

For the next several months, you will be required to put your scholastic work and football above social activities. Success in both of these areas will require a lot of time, effort, and great sacrifice.

You are here at Emerald Ridge High School to get an education first. School must come first, and we will encourage our student-athletes to be purposeful. Those who are not ready to work in the classroom should not come out for football. Your education is our priority.

Emerald Ridge football players must conduct themselves with integrity at all times. We must exhibit extraordinary sportsmanship on the field and extraordinary citizenship off the field. Every action of a team member reflects their coaches, teammates, school, and community. Choose the right friends. Bad company will corrupt good character.

Respect your teammates, coaches, and teachers. This is a must in order for us to develop respectful relationships. We must pull together as a team and school if we are going to have any success as a program.

Respect yourself. Stay in good health by eating the right foods. Avoid fast foods and sweets. Do not take any substance that is considered a drug unless prescribed by a doctor or can be taken over-the -counter. Do not take steroids or any other artificial means to enhance your performance. Do not drink alcohol, smoke, or chew tobacco. There is no room in our program for those who abuse their bodies and minds with drugs. Violations will result in disciplinary action according to the school handbook and district policy.

Be a servant warrior. Welcome opportunities to serve your school and community. Having a heart to serve others without expectations will demonstrate uncommon leadership. We want to be recognized as ordinary men who expect extraordinary results. Remember who you are and what you represent.

THE GREATEST STRENGTH OF A JAGUAR IS THE WARRIOR STANDING NEXT TO HIM.

Emerald Ridge High School Football “A team with character needs no motivation.” Tom Landry

“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence, regardless of his chosen field of endeavor.” Vince Lombardi

PENTAGON OF SUCCESS - CORE VALUES Attitude - As You Think, You Become Character Requires Commitment and Perseverance Attitude is choosing the right attitude in any given situation, on the field and in everyday life. The game of football has so many different turning points, some good and some bad. Just like in life, when you get a curve ball thrown your way, you can choose a positive attitude, or you can let circumstances get you down and have a negative attitude. As a part of the Emerald Ridge football team, as coaches and players, we will choose to have a great attitude in everything that we do realizing that we get the opportunity to be a part of something special.

Humility - Serve First, No Recognition Character Requires True Humility A humble heart is a teachable heart Be teachable by starting out each day with an "Empty Cup.” No one reaches their full potential without the help of others. Be thankful and be eager to put others before you.

Sacrifice - Others Before Self Character Requires Selflessness As an Emerald Ridge football player or coach, I will sacrifice for the betterment of my team. My purpose on this team is to put my teammates before myself, and let go of all personal pride or ego that may consume me. On or off the gridiron, I will sacrifice for my teammate to grant them the glory. In the end, my sacrifice will make my jaguar brother a better man. Character Requires Selflessness

Compete - Never Surrender Character Requires A Courageous Heart Champions LOVE competition. The challenge is becoming more disciplined, more intense, more prepared. Competition brings out the best in us. The harder the battle, the greater the adversity, the stronger we become. Competing is giving it our best in everything we do, the classroom, our relationship, and on the field. As an Emerald Ridge football player and coach, we will strive to compete in everything we do.

Team - Honor Each Other Character Requires a Servant-Minded Optimist Relationships define the character of the person. They influence our decisions, they encourage personal excellence, and they give you courage to fight for excellence. Relationships will prosper when they are united under a commonality of truth, loyalty, and love.

Excellence Character Requires Sense of Purpose It's not a destination, it's a state of your heart. We are in constant pursuit of it. We expect it. We believe success is a by-product of excellence in everything we do. We believe the best way to help a teammate, a team, or a coaching staff achieve excellence is to specifically focus our challenges on our "Best Shot.” The effort needed to achieve excellence is non-negotiable.

The football staff and players are committed to live out these principals with pride, respect, and passion. We firmly believe these core values define us as coaches and players. We will strive for team excellence through personal responsibility, hard work, and service.

THE ROLE OF PARENTS AND COACHES First, we value you as a parent and respect you for giving us the opportunity to coach your student-athlete. Parents and coaches have extremely difficult jobs. Coaches and parents both want athletes to have a positive experience. When your child becomes involved in athletics, you should understand what expectations are placed on them and the role you play in their success as a student athlete. You and the coach have the best interest of your athlete at heart.

To be successful, communication is vital and requires involvement, dedication, sacrifice, and commitment from all parties. Listed below are some guidelines for open communication between parents and coaches:

Communication Parents Should Expect from Coaches 1) Coaches and program’s philosophy 2) Individual and team expectations 3) Location and times of all practices, special equipment, off-season conditioning 4) Team requirements (i.e. special equipment, off-season conditioning) 5) Discipline or behavior that may result in the denial of your child’s participation on the team.

Communication Coaches Expect from Parents 1) Concerns expressed directly to coach 2) Notification of schedule conflicts well in advance 3) Support for the program and a commitment to be involved when the appropriate opportunity arises

Appropriate Concerns to Discuss with Coaches 1) The treatment of your child, mentally, and physically 2) Ways to help your child improve and develop in a sport 3) Concerns about your child’s behavior

Issues not appropriate to Discuss with Coaches 1) Playing Time 2) Play Calling 3) Team Strategy 4) Other student-athletes

Discussions with Coaches 1) Call to set up an appointment 2) Face to face conversations are more beneficial than a text, email, or telephone conversations. 3) Please do not confront a coach before, after or during a practice or game. These can be emotional times

for the parent, student, and coach.

Philosophy of Football in Education It is our belief that football is an integral part of the school curriculum, an extension of the school day to pass on life-long skills. Our coaching staff is dedicated to helping each athlete secure the finest education possible. Student-athletes must learn that dedication, sacrifice, and hard work are necessary for academic excellence to be achieved. We expect a commitment to excellence and to winning, not only in football, but in every endeavor in life they consider worthwhile and meaningful.

Expectations for the Academic Game 1) Always get to your class on time. This cannot be overemphasized. Nothing causes a teacher to turn off to

a student faster than a late arrival. 2) Remember that in any classroom the teacher is the absolute authority. Follow his/her rules and

expectations and show respect at all times. Be a leader in the classroom. 3) Before the class starts, make sure you have all your materials. Once class begins, be careful of talking at

inappropriate times, unless you are asking or answering a question, or are taking part in a teacher-led discussion or activity.

4) Keep your grades up. If you are on academic probation, it will very likely affect playing-time when you return.

PLAYER EXPECTATIONS, TEAM GUIDELINES, LETTERING CRITERIA, & APPEARANCE FOOTBALL TEAM IMAGES AND PERCEPTIONS

We should always put our best foot forward and act with respect and dignity. In this way we leave no questions as to what we are about and what we stand for. There are no superstars on this team, just Jaguars. Be small in our own eyes.

On Field Expectations: 1) Practice like a winner. Games are won and lost on the practice field.2) We expect great attitudes regardless of circumstances. Enjoy your team’s company; however, know when

to be serious and when to relax.3) Practices are a time to do and learn. Pay attention to your coaches when they are teaching; “EYES UP” to

what is being taught. ONE VOICE.4) When a coach is talking to an individual who plays your position, pay attention; get to a position where you

can hear. He is speaking to you as well.5) Know the drills.6) Never sit down on the football field. Rest on one knee. Don’t let water interfere with the drill.7) Know the practice schedule.8) Always know the tempo of the drill you are doing - Tag Hips, Thud, Full Speed.9) The key to your individual success and our team’s success is the total preparation we achieve in practice.

There are NO limits to HUSTLE. (Sprint everywhere we go!!!!)10) Be consistent. Anyone can have a great day or game. It takes DETERMINATION and CHARACTER to

perform over a long period of time.11) Speed, reaction, agility, and great conditioning are critical. We place a high premium on the ability to move

and run for four quarters.12) Know and accept your role on this team unconditionally. Not everyone can be a starter on a football team,

but we will value everyone on this team.13) Have FUN.14) Leave the field with NO REGRETS.

Off the Field Guidelines 1) Think about being successful. Spend time off the field thinking about your assignments. Picture yourself

executing your skills and technique perfectly.2) Between practices is the best time to communicate (ask questions) with your coach.3) Never leave practice with a negative attitude or complaint. Talk things out with your position coach.4) Have a great attitude. Don’t complain or talk negatively to or about your teammates, coaches, or program.

It only causes morale problems and dissension. See your coach if you have concerns.5) There will be no horseplay in the locker room. You must have permission to enter the locker room without a

coach’s approval.6) Absolutely no hazing. This includes activities that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers, regardless

of the person’s willingness to participate. This will be strictly enforced.

Lettering Criteria: 1) Players must remain in good standing with the team. This includes academics, team rules, district policies,

and state regulations.2) Players are to show appropriate respect toward coaches, school officials, and game officials.3) Players need to play in at least 5 quarters during the course of the season in order to be eligible for a

players letter.4) The coaches reserve the right to award letter to any player who they feel has been an important part of the

team’s success, but does not meet the above lettering standards.

Appearance: We will wear our hair in a neat manner. Long hair does not help with your helmet fit. Hair dye will break down the material in the padding of your helmet. We recommend no long hair or hair dye during the season. We also do not wear clothing that would advertise in the favor of any product or belief that is against our athletic code. Jewelry will not be allowed on the football field. Please wear green, black, silver, white attire to practice. Shoes need to be of the same color unless they are used specifically for kicking. Eye black can only be worn one inch under the eye. Not to be used as warrior paint. We only will wear pink as a team if we support a specific cause/ event/person that supports our community and families. Out of complete respect for cancer victims and survivors, we will not wear pink as individuals.
