HOLIDAY DETECTOR HD 93 FEATURES The ISOLTEST HD 93 Holiday Detector is a portable quality control inspection instrument used to electrically locate defects pinhole in protective coatings applied to metallic structures. The detector converts low voltage direct current (rechargeable batteries) into regulated high voltage pulses. Output voltage is selectable from 2,5 to 30 Kvolts in 7 settings and wave form frequency are calibrated on compliance on applicable international standard. This adaptable unit can be used on both large and small diameter pipe as well as flat surfaces when such surfaces are coated with a high electrical resistant material and the surface beneath the coating is electrically conductive; is the right tool for the detection of imperfections on protective coatings applied to pipelines, tanks, pilings or any similar structures; each unit is supplied with a calibration report and CE compliance certificate. The ISOLTEST HD 93 Holiday Detector is versatile, durable construction for all field conditions, light weight, easy battery access .

ASTM D 5162 Pinhole & Porosity Detection - High Voltage Method

ASTM G 62-B Holiday detection in pipeline coatings Method B. Pinholes, voids & thin spots in pipeline coatings. Holiday detector. Use. Thickness less than 1.016mm, V = 3294 x SQR(T mm) Thickness more than 1.041mm, V = 7843 x SQR(T mm)

BS 1344-11 Pinhole & Porosity AS 3894.1 Site testing of protective coatings. Method 1:

Non-conductive coatings - Continuity testing - High voltage (brush) method

Testing coatings above 150 mic at voltages above 500V. Section 7 describes the apparatus. Appendix D gives voltages for testing specified film thicknesses of various coating products: V = 250 x SQR(microns) / Factor

ISO 2746 Vitreous and porcelain enamels - Enameled articles for service under highly corrosive conditions - High voltage test

Discussion document. High voltage test method.

NACE RP0274 High Voltage Electrical Inspection of Pipeline Coatings Prior to Installation

DC or Pulsed kit. Volts = 1250 x SQR(mils).

NACE RP0490-2001 Holiday Detection of Fusion-Bonded Epoxy External Pipeline Coatings of 10 to 30 Mils (0.25 to 0.76 mm)

Use DC system in dry conditions or Pulsed type in damp conditions. Calculate V = 525 x SQR(T mils). Trailing ground lead of 9m is allowed provided pipe is connected to 2-3ft earth spike and soil is not dry. Otherwise, connect both earths.

HOLIDAY DETECTOR HD 93 - USE INSTRUCTIONS 1) SCREW DOWN LINEAR INSPECTION ELECTRODE ON HIGH-VOLTAGE PROBE HANDLE (OR USE WITH EXTENSION PIECE) 2) CONNECT THE CABLE ON HIGH-VOLTAGE PROBE HANDLE TO THE DETECTOR BY MEAN OF THE REALEASE CONNECTOR “H” 3) CONNECT THE EARTH LEAD TO THE FEMALE TAP PLACED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DETECTOR ”I” (should such connection not be made ,the detector will not operate) 4) CONNECT THE PIPE LINE TO BE INSPECTED TO GROUND OR PIPE LINE DIRECTLY WITH EARTH LEAD WITH CLAMP IF PIPELINE WAS PLACE ON HIGH ELECTRICAL RESISTIVITY GROUND (example on concrete place) 5) SET THE " Kv " COMMUTATOR “E” ON THE VALUE BASED ON “CALIBRATION OF THE ACUSTIC – VISUAL INDICATOR "ALARM" “ AND TEST VOLTAGE “TAB. A” 6) SET THE "POWER" SWITCH ON POSITION ON “A” 7) MAKE THE INSPECTION ELECTRODE RUNNING ALONG THE SURFACE TO BE INSPECTED 8) IF ACUSTIC INDICATOR "ALARM" IS REQUIRED,SET ON POSITION "ON" THE RELEVANT SWITCH. TURN COLCKWISE THE KNOB "SENS" “B” TO RAISE THE SENSITIVITY OF THE ACUSTIC INDICATOR “C” and “D” (VISUAL AND ACUSTIC D – F, SIGNAL A FAULT CONDITION COATING INSULATION) 9) WHEN THE SIGNAL "BATT" LIGHTS,SWITCH OFF THE MAIN SWITCH,TAKE OFF THE ACCUMULATOR AND MAKE IT RECHARGING G

ATTENTION! WHEN THE DETECTOR IS OPERATING,DO NOT BRING THE INSPECTION ELECTRODE NEAR TO PEOPLE OR TO THE DETECTOR ITSELF! INTRUCTIONS FOR CALIBRATION OF THE ACUSTIC – VISUAL INDICATOR "ALARM" FIRST METHOD - (AMERICAN SYSTEM) Make the inspection electrode running along the surface to be checked at the fixed speed (about 30 cm/sec. = 18 m/min. = 1,2 Km./h.). Regulate the value of minimum voltage necessary to obtain a spark trough a little hole made on the coating of pipe. The coating on the point chosen for testing must be double, with overlapping both for the protective and the outer tape. Now calibrate the sensitivity to the minimum value (counterclockwise direction) to hear the acoustic signal "ALARM". SECOND METHOD - (DIN 30670 - 30672) Set up the test voltage resulting from thickness of insulating coating. Apply the inspection electrode to the black pipe, regulating the sensitivity to the minimum value (counterclockwise direction) to hear the acoustic signal "ALARM".
