The First tel' in fertilization, until w h veknowledge of P and K, is to apply traight nitro-gen in a non-leaching, long-lasting form. s "OOnas possible this spring apply to tee nd fair-ways 4 lbs. of N in one application. If you vereto usc one of the 380/0 • T materials, for t' -

ample, it would require 450 lbs. to the acre (orabout 1° lbs, of material to 1,000 sq. ft. Thitreatment will be the tart of a longtime pro-gram and is basic to anything you intend to doin the line of seeding or sprigging.

In the absence of a sound, g 'neTOU Ie dinprogram, annual aerifying may help to k epweeds and we .dy grasses active. Ther i noneed to think about ch -mical weed control untilyou plant the right grass and f .ed it adequately.

Your course is known to me. 0 is th othercourse which plans Bermuda fain ay . Your inot considered a proper candidate for Bermudafairways. It is not bccau .e the Bermuda wouldcrowd out your greens but because there i an-other grass that will he much more economicalin every way. I refer to zoysia.

You could grow Merion - Ky 31 Fairways andMerion tees but in your area the maintenancecosts would be much higher than for zoy ia.

Ierion demands at least twice as much fertiliza-tion.

Here is a plan for your fairways. Fertilizsoon this spring, as suggested immediately afterspring aerifying. Secure zoysia japonica eed 0

that you call plant the selected areas at 20 lb .to the acre soon alter aerifying. Mix 20 lb . otzoysia seed with 100 lbs, of the same nitrogenfertilizer that you will have used previously.Broadcast uniformly over fairway area. Youwill not need to mulch the seeding nor will youneed to change your mowing schedule, You illnot .ce much Zoysia turf the first year - onlysmall seedlings. You will see real improvementduring the second year. irtually all ummerweeds gradually will 1)(' choked. It ignifi-cant that goose grass will not grow in zoy iaturf. "TO chemical weed control will b n ce _sary, 0 irrigation will he required, Bluegra s,fescue and poa annua will crowd in and pro-vide much green color during winter and earlyspring. During June, July and Augu t. you willhave outstanding turf - hut no better than dur-ing the other 9 months.

Either zoysia or Bermuda will try to cro db mt greens. Don't lct them in! Weekly poweredging keeps the greens Ire from invasion.

Your present greens can be invaded mu hmore easily than greens of P nncros b nt, forexample. Penncros is your b nt. ieed it afterthorough spiking (sow at ~ lb. to 1,000 q. ft.mixed with 5 lbs. of granular, non-burning nitro-gen fertilizcr). This bent is economical and willgradually replace the weak bent which you nowhave. Also, it will help to k 'ep out weedy gra

If you decide in favor of zoy .ia fairway, 'Ourfeeding program will be on application a yearto upply betwe n 175 and 220 lbs, of p r acrper year.

There are two ways in which you can ap-proach the weed problem in your gre n • Fir tet up and follow a PMA (mercurial) eh dule
