Message from the Exec. Director

Women Rock the 19th Amendment

It is an honor and a pleasure to be writing my first message as Executive Director of the Alice Paul Institute. After eighteen years with this organization, I am very proud to work with our staff, board, and volunteers to lead API into our fourth decade. Despite the ongoing challenges that small non-profit organizations face, API continues to deliver meaningful programs and services to new and returning audiences.

There were no lazy days of summer at Paulsdale this year. The season started with a very successful wine tasting on June 4th. It is always invigorating to have the Girlblazers camp here in June, but this year’s group was especially fun and interested in “all things Alice.” At the final session several girls proudly sang songs and recited poems they composed in her honor. At the end of June we said goodbye to Dana Dabek, the Leadership Program Director who was instrumental in taking API pro-grams to many new schools and venues in the past five years. Dana took a new development position in Pennsylvania, and we wish her well in this new chapter of her life. We capped the summer with a rally in Washington and a concert at Paulsdale for Women’s Equality Day, and now we head into the fall with a full calendar of events and programs. I hope that you can join us for the groundbreaking documentary about women in the media, Miss Representation, on October 25th and for the “Night of Terror” observance on November 15th. As always, thank you for your interest and your support. We hope to see you at Paulsdale soon!

Paulsdale’s porch was transformed into a stage and the lawn was a perfect spot to enjoy a summertime concert for the August 26th Women’s Equality Day event, “Women Rock the 19th Amendment.” The young perform-ers from Sara O’Brien’s “Community Rocks” were a crowd pleaser with their favorite song, “Please Stop Complaining!” Girls Advisory Council members Devon Hartsough and Sarah Hojsak introduced the acts.

Girls Rock Philly performer Attia Taylor and her band entertained with original songs. Music writer Tom Moon, author of 1000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die, talked about women in music, reviewing both familiar and new artists who are not yet well known. September, an all-female band that performs in and around the Philadelphia area, was the final act of the day, playing its own songs as well as covers of several rock and roll hits.

New Gift Shop Item

Girlblazers Summer Camp 2012

Be sure to check out our brand new gift shop item, Born in the U.S.A: Birth, Commemoration, and American Public Memory, edited by Seth C. Bruggerman. The book is a collection of essays on the challenges of saving and managing historical sites. One of the chapters is written by API’s Director of Programs Kris Myers and discusses the history, preservation, and evolution of Paulsdale.

On September 27th at Paulsdale, Bruggerman presented stories from the book and Kris Myers discussed her research on API’s beginnings. Then, five founding members of API--Barbara Irvine, Patricia Williams, Jean Perry, Judy Buckman, and Chris Borget--shared their experiences with saving Paulsdale to create the Alice Paul Institute’s home.

Girlblazers Summer Camp took place in June on-site at the Alice Paul Institute. Twenty-four fifth grade girls from the five schools that make up Catholic Partnership Schools in Camden, NJparticipated in the camp, learning about such women as: astronaut Ellen Ochoa, artist Frida Kahlo, journalist Ida Wells-Barnett, naturalist Rachel Carson, and tennis star Rosie Casals. Campers created self-portraits, developed inventions to make the world a better place, solved a Paulsdale mystery, learned tennis and hiked at a local nature center. The girls also met area women leaders, including an engineer, a reporter from The Philadelphia Inquirer, and a social activist. They practiced effective leadership in games, art projects, science experiments, field trips, and teambuilding exercises. As a culminating activity, the girls hosted a luncheon for family and school administrators, which included their presentations on the role model leaders. In the past two years, Catholic Partnership Schools have served as a wonderful program partner, but we also look forward to reaching out to additional schools and expanding the program in the coming years.

We Are Woman RallyAPI was front and center at the August 18th “We Are Woman” Rally on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. South Jersey NOW--Alice Paul Chapter generously offered free rides on its charter bus to the rally to GAC member Daphni Sawyer and Sarah Bear, who as API’s new Program Associate is the GAC advisor. Sarah and Daphni took the stage with API Exec. Director Lucy Beard to honor Alice Paul and her fight for women’s rights. In her remarks Beard said, “History books say that in 1920, women were ‘given’ the right to vote. It was not given. It was earned, it was fought for, it was won by Alice Paul and generations of women whobelieved that women who bear the responsibilities of American citizenship should also enjoy the rights of that citizenship.” Beard’s speech was one of many that celebrated women’s achievements yet called for renewed action to win the fight for full equality. For Daphni Sawyer it was a new and empowering experience. “People had come from far and wide, all over this great country, to participate in the ‘We AreWoman’ Rally. For me it was heart-warming, listening to the urgency in the voice of the speakers. Contrary to how it may seem when one pays attention to the media, there are actually many people who prioritize women’s rights. The level of participation in the rally proved this.” Norah Tumas, a GAC alumna who recently graduated from American University and now works in Washington, D.C., also joined the women on stage because, in her words, “No matter where I am, I always feel like Alice Paul is nearby and that I should do whatever I can to keep her work going.”
