remarkable high-goal polo career began. Barely a year since she first

picked up a polo mallet Sheikha Maitha is preparing to contest the first leg of the British Triple Crown, the 22-

goal Queen’s Cup. It’s a remarkable achievement by any standards, not least the fact that she is one of only three women patrons to have ever

fielded a high-goal polo team.

the landmark occasions have come thick and fast since Sheikha Maitha first tried her hand at the game of kings at Ali Albwardy’s Desert Palm estate in Dubai last spring. At the end of last summer her Godolphin Polo Team won the Bathurst Cup, the subsidiary final of the Warwickshire Cup that is the third leg of the British Triple Crown. In January her first tournament win came on home turf with a 16-goal Godolphin squad landing the inaugural Emirates Cup and just a month later Sheikha Maitha led Desert Palm to 12-goal triumph over defending champions Cartier in the Cartier International Dubai Polo Challenge. With two tournament wins to her credit Sheikha Maitha is now turning her attention to international challenges as she heads for the British high-goal circuit.

‘Hotel’ is not necessarily the first word you would associate with Bulgari as the brand is of

course most famous for its jewellery, and, more recently, its fine watches. The Bulgari Hotel and

Residences is the brand’s third hotel project, with the first having opened in Milan in 2004

and the second in Bali in 2006. Now it has Milan and London covered, Paris or New York

are surely the next logical steps so it will be interesting to see where the enigmatic BVLGARI

hospitality arm hangs its next hotel sign.

This careful selection of locations shows determination to adhere to a ‘less is more’ philosophy and although the latest property is far from understated, it maintains a subtle exclusivity that makes it a cut above many large

international chains.While at 85 rooms and suites, Bulgari’s London hotel, in the heart of

Knightsbridge, arguably one of the city’s most exclusive addresses, is perhaps a little large to be called a ‘boutique’ hotel, but it is compact enough to make it feel like a home away from home in one of the world’s truly great cities. It is also something as a coup for Bulgari as it is the first newly built luxury hotel in the city for 40 years - an astonishing fact but perhaps less so in the context of the tradition of high class hotels in the city, led by the greats including The Ritz, The Savoy, and

the image of two mares with their faces touching towards the end of the book.“This is a nice example of being able to photograph true reflections of the personalities of the two mares”, says Tariq. “They were both mares with foals, gentle in their demeanour and inquisitive by nature, as many Arabians tend to be. We simply brought two mares together, allowing them to say hello, anticipating some kind of reaction but not knowing exactly what that might be. Their reaction was a sweet and calm greeting, bowing their heads respectfully, so beautiful to behold. I think I pressed the button at the right time. It was a lucky shot!”“Luck” seems to deny the skill involved in capturing such a perfect shot, and while he seems reluctant to admit it, there is something distinctive about a Dajani photograph.“I suppose, over the years, I have developed a look or style that can be seen in much of my work”, says Tariq. “Occasionally somebody will comment and ask me about it, but I don’t really know what it is. When I’m working to produce my work I tend to know what I like and what I don’t like, how I want to shape the image and how not. Somebody else would do it differently. I just do what feels right within the context of what I’m trying to produce at the time. This was case with

the Asil photographs of course.”As to the future, Tariq is keeping his cards close to his chest about what he will do next. “I’ve always got a few ideas about new projects, but I never like to talk about them until I’ve made some progress,” he says. “What I will say is that I doubt I will be using the same approach as I did with the horses and falcons, namely a studio set-up with lights and backdrop on location. One has to keep moving on and developing new ideas.”

After a remarkably successful photographic exhibition of minutely observed images of falcons, Tariq returns with a new book which charts his passion for the beauty of the Arabian horse.

Asked why he particularly wanted to document the Arabian horse, Tariq Dajani has a host of reasons, and, you only have to open a copy of Asil to see that it was a book simply waiting to be created. He asks: “What is there not to like about Arabians?” And seeing the book, one is inclined to agree. He expands on the theme, saying: “They [Arabians] are beautiful to behold, intelligent and inquisitive in their nature, loyal to their (kind) masters, graceful in their movement, compact in their physique yet stronger and faster than seemingly more powerful horses, their stamina is unsurpassed and they are adaptable to almost every situation and demand.”“Arabian horses are the stuff of legends and fairy tales, and much of it is based on truth. It is not for nothing that they are so greatly respected and prized. For me, I have to add that there is the added element of these horses being a part of an Arab heritage which I can also lay claim to. Not least at a time when Arabs may be regarded somewhat negatively in the world, I am pleased that as an Arab photographer I can contribute with something positive to raise a general perception of this creature of wonder that ostensibly came from the Arab world.”The horses that features in Asil come not just from the Arab world, although they are all purebreds of a variety of strains from across the USA, Europe and the Middle East. Many are show horses, while others are flat racers or desert-bred in the Gulf of Arabia to preserve ancient bloodlines. In his introduction to the book, Tariq says however it was not just a case of documenting the animals and their credentials. “My interest was to go a bit deeper in expressing an element of the horse’s personality and character, intelligence and curiosity, pride and self-esteem, its sense of calm or even aggression - as can be seen with a couple of the stallions exhibiting a flash of ferocity.”Ferocity may well be on display, but the contrasting moments of serenity that the breed is capable of also appear, most notably in
