    Voice (or vocalization)isthesound

    produced by humansand other

    vertebratesusingthelungsandthe vocal

    foldsinthelarynx,or voice box.Voiceis

    notalways producedasspeech,however.Infants babbleandcoo;animals bark,

    moo,whinny,growl,andmeow;andadulthumanslaugh,

    sing,andcry.Voiceisgenerated by airflow fromthelungs

    asthe vocal foldsare broughtclosetogether.Whenairis

    pushed pastthe vocal foldswithsufficient pressure,thevocal folds vibrate. Ifthe vocal foldsinthelarynxdidnot

    vibratenormally,speechcouldonly be producedasa

    whisper.Your voiceisasuniqueas your fingerprint. It

    helpsdefine your personality,mood,andhealth.

    Approximately 7.5million peopleinthe United Stateshavetroubleusingtheir voices.Disordersofthe voiceinvolve problemswith pitch,loudness,andquality.Pitchisthehighnessorlownessofasound basedon

    the frequency ofthesoundwaves. Loudnessistheperceived volume (oramplitude)ofthesound,whilequality referstothecharacterordistinctiveattributesofasound. Many peoplewhohavenormalspeakingskillshavegreatdifficulty communicatingwhentheir

    vocalapparatus fails.Thiscanoccurifthenervescontrollingthelarynxareimpaired becauseofanaccident,asurgical procedure,a viralinfection,orcancer

    Causesof vocal problemsmay include

    upperrespiratory infections,

    inflammationcaused by acidreflux,

    vocalmisuseandabuse,vocalnodules

    orlaryngeal papillomatosis (growths),

    laryngealcancer,neuromuscular

    diseases (suchasspasmodicdysphonia

    or vocalcord paralysis),and

    psychogenicconditionsduetopsychologicaltrauma.Keep inmind

    thatmost voice problemsarereversible

    andcan besuccessfully treatedwhen

    diagnosedearly.

    Limit yourintakeofdrinksthatinclude

    alcoholorcaffeine.Theseactasdiuretics

    irritatesthemucousmembranesthatline

    thethroat.

    Drink plenty ofwater.Sixtoeightglassesa

    day isrecommended. Don'tsmokeandavoidsecond-handsmoke.

    inindividualswhosmoke.

    Practicegood breathingtechniqueswhen

    singingortalking.

    Avoideatingspicy foods. Spicy foodscancause

    stomachacidtomoveintothethroatoresophagus

    (reflux).

    Useahumidifierin yourhome.Thisisespecially

    importantinwinterorindry climates.Thirty percent

    humidity isrecommended.

    Avoidtalkinginnoisy places.Tryingtotalkabove

    noisecausesstrainonthe voice.

    Avoidmouthwashorgarglesthatcontainalcoholorirritatingchemicals. If youstillwishtouseamouthwash

    thatcontainsalcohol,limit yourusetooralrinsing. If

    garglingisnecessary,useasaltwatersolution.

    Try nottooveruse your voice.Avoidspeakingor

    singingwhen your voiceishoarse.

    Include plenty ofwholegrains, fruits,and vegetablesin

    yourdiet.These foodscontain vitamins A,E,andC.

    They alsohelp keep themucusmembranesthatline

    thethroathealthy.

    Donotcradlethe phonewhentalking.Cradlingthe

    phone betweentheheadandshoulder forextended

    periodsoftimecancausemuscletensionintheneck. Exerciseregularly.Exerciseincreasesstaminaand

    muscletone.Thishelps providegood postureand

    breathing,whicharenecessary for properspeaking.

    Getenoughrest.Physical fatiguehasanegativeeffect

    on voice.

    Lie on your back with your knees in the air andyour eyes closed.Pay attentiontohow your body feelsas you breathe.

    Seekoutandeliminateany tension by "breathinginto" thatlocation.Theideaistorelaxareasof yourbody thataffect your voice. Importantareasto focusonare: jaw,neck,shoulders,chest,upperandlowerback,anddiaphragm. Breathedeeply toexpand yourlungcapacity.

    Prop your head back a bit and release your jaw sothat it gapes open.

    Thereshould benotensionatallin yourneck,chest,shouldersor jaw.Takeinadeep breath,andasyou breatheout, vocalize. Itwillsoundlikeanopen-

    mouthedmoan. As you vocalize,pay closeattentionto your jaw,neck,shoulders, backandchest. Mostlikely,they willtenseup when you vocalize.Keeppracticinguntil youcan vocalizewithouttensing yourmuscles.

    Record yourself speaking as normally

    as you possibly can.

    Finda paragraphina bookornewspaperyouarereading,andspeakasnaturally as

    possibleintosomerecordingdevice.You

    canoften findtheseincell phonesand

    computers.

    Watch yourself speak by standing in

    front of a mirror while reading the

    same paragraph.

    Watch your facecarefully,payingspecial

    attentiontohow yourmouthmovesand

    your facialexpressions.

    Practice your new speaking voice.Recordandwatch yourselfagain,and

    decidewhether youdidanadequate job

    atcorrectingthe problems youidentified

    earlier.Becarefulnottooverdoit;your

    voicewillsoundobviously fake

    Pay attention to common problems.

    Most peoplehaveasimilarideaastowhattheidealspeaking voiceis.Thesequalities vary only slightly:-

    Varying pitch. Avoidthedreadedmonotone by raising

    andlowering your voicetoemphasizeorde-emphasize

    certain pointsofwhat youaresaying.Thisoften varies

    by region,so pay attentionto your friendsandneighboursasthey speak.

    Soft volume. Nobody wantsto be yelledat,sospeak just

    alittlesofterthan younormally would,especially when

    talkingtosomeonewhois physically closeto you.

    Relaxedtone. Ifthereistensionin yourthroatorchest,

    your voicewillsoundhoarseand forced,almostasif

    youhavelaryngitis.Relax yourupper body,including

    yourshoulders,neckandabdominalmuscles,and your

    voicewillsoundmoregentleand pleasant.

    Breathing deeply.

    Thisspeech voiceexercisemakesthediaphragm

    stronger.Todotheexercise,youneedto breatheinfrom yourdiaphragm, forcing yourstomachup.Hold

    your breath forabout 4 secondsandthen breatheout,

    also forabout 4 seconds.Theexerciseisdone forsix

    timesevery day.Youneedto be persistentwith your

    speech voiceexercises.Thatisthekey tosuccess.

    Confidence

    Always beconfidentonwhat youarespeaking

    as youwillnotsoundwelltotheaudiencewhen

    youarenervous.Toimprove vocal variety,read

    aloud fromthe phone bookoracook bookwith

    expressionthiswillgain youconfidence

    Itmay seemstrange,butthisholdstrueinalmostevery situation.Particularly, your voiceoftenhasmoreimpactthan yourmessageto yourlisteners.Andif youwanttogainrespect,

    confidence,andattention fromthe people youaretalkingwith,youwill benefitmuch fromdoingspeech voiceexercises.

    Speech voiceexerciseshelp youimprove yourbreathingsothat your voicecomesoutasarich,

    full,anddeep sound.
