WOMBAT STEW
What a wonderful time children from Kindergarten, Year 1
and Year 2 had last Tuesday when they were taken to a live
performance of Wombat Stew at Glen Street Theatre,
Belrose. The first part of the performance, where children
learnt to use props made out of simple everyday items,
was fascinating. It was a useful learning tool that could be
transferred to any place that has a dress-up box. Then we
got down to the show. The set was an outback bush scene
and the cast represented most of Australia’s indigenous
animals. The audience participation was deliberately loud,
exciting and involved every child singing, dancing and
calling out, just like in an old pantomime performance. The
children followed up the experience with classroom
activities. Below are some of the children’s responses. You
can see from them that Eric the Echidna was a big hit!
Others can be found
displayed on our
Library Graffiti Wall
outside the Library
Resource Centre.

My favourite part of Wombat Stew was when
Eric was popping out of the change room. He
was funny. Antonio 1A

Dear Mrs Campbell,
On Friday we went to see Wombat Stew. I
liked the part when we rode the bus because
we got to speak with our partner. We rode
the bus to Glen Street Theatre. When the
echidna said “Can I have a name” he was
clever because he thought of the name Eric
the Echidna. My favourite part was when the
dingo drank the wombat stew. I didn’t like
the creepy crawlies, slugs and bugs. Thank
you for organising the trip to Glen Street.

Dear Mrs Campbell,
On Friday we went to see Wombat Stew. We
rode on a bus to Glen St Theatre. My
favourite part was when Eric the Echidna
kept poking out from the curtains. At the end
of the show there was light shaped like a
heart on the curtain. Thank you for taking us
to Wombat Stew. Frankie 1T
Dear Mrs Campbell,
On Friday we went to see Wombat Stew. It
was at Glen St Theatre. The echidna’s name
was Eric. I think it was better than Possum
Magic. My favourite character was the emu
because she was graceful. I also noticed that
she was all red. I also noticed that the emu
looked familiar but it was Mrs Ashton. Thank
you for organising the musical. Love from
Jemma 1T

DEBATING On Thursday Epping North Public School
debated against our school. The speakers
were Jacob, Sam, Adam and Charlotte. It was
a challenging debate and it got down to three
major points. Epping got two out of the
three and we won the debate. Good job
debating team and keep trying.

YEAR 5 MILO CRICKET DAY
Last Tuesday, some Year 5 students
represented Epping Public School at the Milo
Cricket Blast Schools Cup at Fred Caterson
Reserve, Castle Hill. The girls’ cricket team
played three games against Dural Public
School, Normanhurst West Public School and
St Agatha's. The boy’s cricket team played
three games against Hills Grammar, St
Agatha's and Galston Public School. The boys
managed to win their first game by just 6
runs. It was great to see all students become
familiar with the rules of cricket and were
given numerous opportunities to practise
newly-learnt skills in game situations.
"Even though we lost, our bowling, fielding
and batting skills improved. Thank you to the
parents and Mrs Buttrey for driving us. We
had a great day!" - Luluai 5B

LIBRARY NEWS Book Fair
We have a busy week ahead of us with
Education Week, including Open Day and our
annual Book Fair. Today you should receive a
flyer about our book fair, provided by
Scholastic Books. Our book fair will be on
Wednesday 30 July. The fair will be located in
the CAPA Room and will be open from
8:45am till 3:40pm.There will be display
cabinets and tables full of books and
stationery for children to buy. Any
commission made from the book fair will go
towards Graphic Novels for our Library.
Because there was such a problem with
crowds in the room last year, we ask you to
stagger your visits and leave strollers outside
if possible. There will be the opportunity to
order books if supplies run low. Scholastic
promptly replies to Book Fair requests. Cash
and credit card facilities will be available.
Mum and dad - Pester Power, just what you
need!
Overdue books
Some children still have not returned their
library books from before the holidays. To
avoid any embarrassment, could you please
stress to your children that it is their
responsibility to return books when they are
due. Next week a list of overdue books will
be distributed to classes.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Children who attended the performance of
Wombat Stew last week can add the title to
their PRC Reading Log. The book was writ
ten by Margaret Wild and its ID Number is
4925. In library classes this term I have read
Silver Buttons by Bob Graham (ID 2813) and
The Treasure Box by Margaret Wild (ID
1290). These books fall into the K-2 category
and can also be added to the Student
Reading Record. The 2014 Premier’s Reading
Challenge must conclude on Friday 22
August.

WHY SHOULD CHILDREN EAT MORE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES? We all know fruit and vegetables are good for us. They are packed full of vitamins and minerals that are important for growth and development and are a source of dietary fibre, which prevents constipation. Regularly eating diets high in fruit and vegetables also protects against a number of diseases. More than 87% of primary school age children in NSW do not consume the recommended amount of vegetables. In a few weeks we are beginning Crunch & Sip to provide students with the opportunity to consume at least one serve of fruit or vegetables at school each day. This can help increase the total number of serves children are eating. More information on Crunch and Sip will be coming home soon. How much fruit and vegetables do children need?
Opportunities for All
Guidelines suggest we should all aim to eat 2 fruit and 5 vegetable servings every day, this includes children. A serving is equivalent to the amount of chopped loosely packed raw fruit, salad or vegetables you can hold in one hand. For adults this is usually about 1 cup. The emphasis should be on eating a variety of fruit and vegetables, including raw, cooked and different colours. This provides a wide range of nutrients. Children can often be fussy about eating fruit and vegetables. Did you know that children have to be offered a food up to 10 times before they will accept and eat it? Perseverance is the key! Why not try sneaking fruit into a favourite dessert (for example canned peaches in jelly), or grate some vegetables into a meal (such as grated carrot and zucchini into Bolognese sauce)? Or take your child to the supermarket to pick their own sweet, crisp and delicious fruit or vegetables. They are more likely to eat them if they are involved in selecting them. Setting a good example can help encourage children to eat fruit and vegetables. When children see their role models and peers enjoying fruit and vegetables in class, they are more likely to eat them too. Crunch & Sip will provide a great social opportunity for your child to enjoy fruits and vegetables. Keep an eye out for further information on Crunch and Sip in next week’s newsletter. -Live Life Well @ School Team.
