WORLD TEACHER’S DAY – 26 OCTOBERThis Friday 26 October is World Teachers Day. Teachers at our school work hard to make sure all students are known, valued and cared for. Perhaps ask your child to write a letter or draw a picture for their teacher this Friday.

FAREWELL MRS JARVISToday we said thank you to Mrs Jarvis for her dedication over 40 years to the teaching profession, 20 years of which was at Epping Heights. We wish her all the best in retirement. Mrs Jarvis has touched the lives of thousands of children and their families and supported and led colleagues and peers. An engaged, intelligent, organised and respected colleague, Mrs Jarvis leaves a lasting legacy particularly in the areas of technology, literature and library.Mrs Jarvis’ position of Assistant Principal at our school is currently under merit selection.

CHILD PROTECTIONEach year teachers support our students to build their personal safety skills through the explicit teaching of Child protection lessons. Lessons are taught in Term 4 from an odd and even year School scope and sequence. There are 5 in depth lessons yearly for each Stage. As some material discussed is private and sensitive, the lessons are taught by the class teacher who knows your child best. The lessons are as follows (please note 2018 is an even year):

Child Protection Scope and Sequence K-6 Epping Heights P.S.

Lesson K Stage 1 Even Year Stage 1 Odd Year11 Relationships

Relationships are connections I have with other people. There are different kinds of relationships.

Rights & ResponsibilitiesI have the right to be cared for and to be safe. I can show care to others.

Caring For OthersEveryone needs to be touched in a caring way. Children can show care to others.

22 TrustThere are many people who care for me. I trust them because I have a relationship with them. Sometimes trust can be broken.

Comfortable/Uncomfortable FeelingsWhen things happen to me or around me I get different feelings. Some feelings are comfortable and some feelings are uncomfortable.

Warning SignalsMy body has signals which give me messages. Some signals are warnings. When things happen to me or are happening around me, I get body signals.

33 Body PartsI need to know that some parts of my body are private. As I grow older, it is not okay for others to touch the private parts of my body unless I am ill or need help to look after myself.

Wanted &Unwanted TouchSome touching can be confusing. I have the right to say NO to unwanted touching.Others need permission to touch what is mine. NO-GO-TELL.

Safe and Unsafe SituationsWhen I experience body signals I have to stop and think about whether I am safe or unsafe. Adventure can be scary but fun. If I am confused or experiencing warning signalsI could be unsafe.

44 Yes and No FeelingsKnowing names for my feelings can help me understand when I need protection.

Saying NOSaying No can be hard sometimes. When I can say NO, I need to say it in a strong, clear way. Using body language can help make my message clearer.

Happy and Unhappy SecretsMost secrets are happy. If a secret is unhappy it can be hard to talk about. It is important to tell an adult you trust about an unhappy secret.

55 No Go TellSafety rules can help to keep me safe. If I am in an unsafe situation, I need to say NO and to GO and TELL someone about it.

NetworksHaving a number of adults for my network is very important. I can use my network for help and support.

My Strategies-TELLINGIt is important that I tell a trusted adult if I am feeling mixed up, uncomfortable or unsafe or if I have an unhappy secret.

Lesson Stage 2 Even Year Stage 2 Odd Year Stage 3 Even Year Stage 3 Odd Year11 Abuse of power

People can have power in different ways. When people use their power, they have a responsibility to use it fairly and in a way which respects the rights of others.

BullyingBullying is not okay. It can hurt me physically, emotionally and mentally. If bullying happens to me there are strategies I can use to take action.

Type of RelationshipsRelationships are connections or links I have with other people. All relationships are different. Relationships can change. Healthy or positive relationships are based on trust and respect.

Source of Power- HarassmentPeople can have power from different sources. They have choices in the way they use their power. Power should be used in a fair way.

22 Bribes and ThreatsI know when I receive a real gift. I need to understand when a gift is used as a bribe. A person might use bribes or threats and expect me to do things which are not okay.

Rights & ResponsibilitiesI know my rights. I have the right to be safe and to have my body, thoughts and feelings respected and to be treated fairly. When I have rights, I also have responsibilities.

Abuse of Power-CoercionCoercion occurs when one person makes or tries to make another person do something which that person does not want to do. Coercion can involve guilt, threats, force and bribes.NO GO TELL

Emotional Abuse & NeglectEmotional abuse is words andactions which hurt children’s feelings and harm the way they think about themselves. Neglect occurs when children are harmed because they do not receive enough food, care, attention or medicalcare.

33 Body PartsI know the correct names for the private parts of my body. It is not okay for another person to touch the private parts of my body unless they are injured or need help to clean them.

Physical & Sexual AbusePhysical abuse is where a person’s body is harmed or injured onpurpose by another person. If another person touches my sexual body parts in a way that is not okayor asks me to touch their sexual parts this is sexual abuse.

Identifying RiskSome situations, people and places might be more likely than others to put me at risk of harm or abuse.

Effects of AbuseAbuse and neglect can result in emotional and mental harm as well as physical harm. Abuse and neglect can affect the way children value themselves. They can affect the way children feel, think and act.

44 ProtectionMy body, my emotions and my thoughts can be harmed. Adults are responsible for protecting children from harm. As I grow older I can help protect myself.

NO GO TELLIt is important to follow safety rules but I also need some strategies to use if I am unsafe.NO- GO-TELL FEEL- THINK- ACT

No Go TellNO- GO-TELL are safety strategies I can use in any unsafe situation. It can be difficult to use these strategies. If I can’t say NO or GO, I can always TELL, even if it is later.

Planning for SafetyAs I grow up I am more responsible for myself, my actions and my behaviour. I am able to make choices about my life. It is smart to plan ahead to be safe.

55 No Go TellTELLING a trusted adult about abuse can be difficult. Having support from a friend and usinggood communication skills can help you to TELL.

My StrategiesI can use a range of strategies to help protect myself if I feel unsafe or have been harmed or abused.

Using Personal NetworksI have a personal network of trusted adults and supportive friends. If I feel unsafe or threatened, I can choose people from this network to go to for support or advice, or tohelp me be safe.

Responding to riskI need to trust my feelings if I feel unsafe or at risk in a situation. NO –GO – TELL strategies can help me. There are other strategies that I can use to be safe.

DAY FOR DANIELEstablished in 2005 by Bruce and Denise Morcombe, shortly after the abduction and murder of their son Daniel while waiting for a bus in 2003, the Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s key role in the community is the education of all children about their personal safety and to assist young victims of crime. The foundation continues to empower all Australians to make their local communities safer places for all children and support Daniel’s legacy through these initiatives. This Friday 26th October the SRC will be supporting the Daniel Morcombe Foundation with a Day for Daniel. Students will participate in child safety lessons including a national online broadcast, encouraged to wear red and donate to the foundation to help it continue to fund and develop educational resources that help keep kids safe. Please bring along a gold coin (to class teacher), wear something red (NB- not mufti) and let’s make child safety a priority. Thank you!
