    How to administerBuccal Midazolam

    (Epistatus)10mg in 1ml

    Partial Seizures

    Recognise the common symptoms ofpartial seizures: Blank staring Chewing

    Fumbling

    Wandering

    If you see someone havinga partial seizure: Keep calm Speak quietly to the person

    Reassure them throughout the event

    Protect the person from hazards withoutrestraining them

    Explain to others what is happening

    People who have had this type of seizure

    should be fully conscious and aware beforebeing left on their own. Make sure they knowthe date, where they are and where they aregoing next

    Confusion may last longer than the seizureitself and may be hazardous. If fullconsciousness does not return, call for medicalassistance

    Epistatus is generally administered after some minutes of convulsive activityor for repeated seizures or as directed by your doctor or epilepsy nurse.

    Open the bottle bypressing down on thechild resistant cap andturning it anti-clockwise.Insert the syringe firmlyinto the bung on the topof the bottle, with theplunger pressed to thebottom of the syringe

    Supporting the bottle, tipthe bottle upside downand slowly pull theplunger on the syringe,until you have

    withdrawn theprescribed amount

    Support the head.

    Locate the buccal areaby holding the chinand gently applyingdownward pressureon the lower lip asshown in this picture

    Insert the syringe intothe buccal cavity - thespace between thelower gums and thecheek. Do not placethe syringe betweenthe patients teeth asthe syringe may bebitten

    Slowly administer halfthe liquid in thesyringe by pushingthe plungerdownwards. Thenrepeat on the otherside

    Epistatus can also be

    given intra-nasallywith half of each dosebeing administeredinto each nostril

    Screw the cap back on thebottle immediately after use

    Convulsive SeizuresIf you see someone having aconvulsive seizure you should: Keep calm

    Stay with the person Move things like chairs and other objects away

    from them so that they dont hurt themselves

    If you can, put something soft such as a cushionunder their head

    Reassure the person throughout the seizure andwhen it is over

    DO NOT try to physically stop the seizure or try

    to restrain the person DO NOT put anything in the mouth

    Stay with the person until the seizure is over andtry to place them in the recovery position asshown in thesepictures

    There is usually no need to call anambulance for medical assistance unless: The seizure lasts longer than usual for the

    individual

    The person has repeated seizures

    The person has sustained an injury

    The person has had a seizure in the sea or aswimming pool

    Storage Keep midazolam at room temperature, away from bright light and direct sunlight and away from heat. Do not store midazolam in a fridge. You may not be using midazolam regularly, so please keep a check on the expiry date.
