Pentecost Novena to the Holy Spirit  Day 1 - Spirit of Wisdom  Opening Song

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

O Salutaris Hostia

O Salutaris Hostia

Quae coeli pandis ostium

Bella premunt hostilia

Da robur, fer auxilium

Uni trinoque Domino

Sit sempiterna Gloria

Qui vitam sine termin

Nobis donet in patria.

Amen

O Saving Victim opening wide

The gates of heav’n to us below!

Our foes press on from every side;

Thine aid supply, thy strength bestow.

To Thy great name be endless praisem

Immortal Godhead, One in Three;

Oh, grant us endless length of days,

In our true native land with Thee.

Amen

Opening Prayers

Come Holy Spirit

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send

forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by

the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our

Lord, Amen.

Reading: James 1: 2-8

Consider it all joy, my brothers, when you encounter various trials, for you know that the

testing of your faith produces perseverance. And let perseverance be perfect, so that you may

be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God

who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and he will be given it. But he should ask in

faith, not doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed

about by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the

Lord, since he is a man of two minds, unstable in all his ways.

Homily

 Pray, Come, O Spirit of Wisdom, and reveal to my soul the mysteries of heavenly things, their

exceeding greatness, power and beauty. Teach me to love them above and beyond all the

passing joys and satisfactions of earth. Help me to attain them and possess them forever.

Amen.

Novena Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Oh, Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, I adore you. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me,

console me. Tell me what I should do; give me your orders. I promise to submit myself to all

that you desire of me and to accept all that you permit to happen to me. Let me only know your

will.

O Holy Spirit, Giver of every good and perfect gift, grant me, I ask you, the intentions of this

Novena. May Your will be done in me and through me. May You be praised and glorified

forevermore! Amen

Lord Jesus Christ, you gave us the Eucharist as the memorial of your suffering and death. May

our worship of this sacrement of your body and blood help us to experience the salvation you

won for us and the peace of the kingdom where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Response: Amen

Blessed be God. Blessed be His Holy Name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man.

Blessed be the Name of Jesus. Blessed be His Most Sacred Heart. Blessed be His Most Precious

Reading: Psalms 119:33-40

LORD, teach me the way of your statutes;

I shall keep them with care.

Give me understanding to keep your law,

to observe it with all my heart.

Lead me in the path of your commandments,

for that is my delight.

Direct my heart toward your testimonies

and away from gain.

Avert my eyes from what is worthless;

by your way give me life.

For your servant, fulfill your promise

made to those who fear you.

Turn away from me the taunts I dread,

for your judgments are good.

See how I long for your precepts;

in your righteousness give me life.

Song of Reflection

the mysteries of salvation; and may merit at last to see the eternal light of Your Light; and in

Reading: Psalms 143:1-8

LORD, hear my prayer;

in your faithfulness listen to my

pleading;

answer me in your righteousness.

Do not enter into judgment with your

servant;

before you no one can be just.

The enemy has pursued my soul;

he has crushed my life to the ground.

He has made me dwell in darkness

like those long dead.

My spirit is faint within me;

my heart despairs.

I remember the days of old;

I ponder all your deeds;

the works of your hands I recall.

I stretch out my hands toward you,

my soul to you like a parched land.

Hasten to answer me, LORD;

for my spirit fails me.

Do not hide your face from me,

lest I become like those descending to

the pit.

In the morning let me hear of your

mercy,

for in you I trust.

Reading: Psalms 27: 4-6; 11-14

One thing I ask of the LORD;

this I seek:

To dwell in the LORD’s house

all the days of my life,

To gaze on the LORD’s beauty,

to visit his temple.

For God will hide me in his shelter

in time of trouble,

He will conceal me in the cover of his tent;

and set me high upon a rock.

Even now my head is held high

above my enemies on every side!

I will offer in his tent

sacrifices with shouts of joy;

I will sing and chant praise to the LORD.

LORD, show me your way;

lead me on a level path

because of my enemies.

Do not abandon me to the desire of my foes;

malicious and lying witnesses have risen against me.

I believe I shall see the LORD’s goodness

in the land of the living.

Wait for the LORD, take courage.

Good. Amen

Reading: Romans 15:4-7; 11-14

For whatever was written previously was written for our instruction, that by endurance

and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of

endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one another, in keeping

with Christ Jesus, that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father

of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the

glory of God. And again: “Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise

him.” And again Isaiah says: “The root of Jesse shall come, raised up to rule the Gentiles;

in him shall the Gentiles hope.” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in

believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. I myself am

convinced about you, my brothers, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all

knowledge, and able to admonish one another.

Homily

Song of Reflection

Pray, Come, O Blessed Spirit of Knowledge, and grant that I may perceive the will of the Father;

Reading: Psalms 118: 14-21

The LORD, my strength and might,

has become my savior.

The joyful shout of deliverance

is heard in the tents of the righteous:

“The LORD’s right hand works

valiantly;

the LORD’s right hand is raised;

the LORD’s right hand works

valiantly.”

I shall not die but live

and declare the deeds of the LORD.

The LORD chastised me harshly,

but did not hand me over to death.

Open the gates of righteousness;

I will enter and thank the LORD.

This is the LORD’s own gate,

through it the righteous enter.

I thank you for you answered me;

you have been my Savior.

our worship of this sacrement of your body and blood help us to experience the salvation you

won for us and the peace of the kingdom where you live with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever.

Response: Amen

Blessed be God. Blessed be His Holy Name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true Man.

Matthew 18:1-6

At that time the disciples approached Jesus and said, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom

of heaven?” He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you,

unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And

whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me. “Whoever causes one of

these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great

millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

Homily

Song of Reflection

 Pray, Come, O blessed Spirit of Holy Fear, penetrate my inmost heart, that I may set You, my Lord

and God, before my face forever, help me to shun all things that can offend You, and make me

worthy to appear before the pure eyes of Your Divine Majesty in heaven, where You livest and

reignest in the unity of the ever Blessed Trinity, God, world without end. Amen

Novena Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Oh, Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul, I adore you. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me,

console me. Tell me what I should do; give me your orders. I promise to submit myself to all

that you desire of me and to accept all that you permit to happen to me. Let me only know your

will.

O Holy Spirit, Giver of every good and perfect gift, grant me, I ask you, the intentions of this

Novena. May Your will be done in me and through me. May You be praised and glorified

forevermore! Amen

Reading: Galatians 5: 16-26

I say, then: live by the Spirit and you will certainly not gratify the desire of the flesh.

For the flesh has desires against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; these are opposed

to each other, so that you may not do what you want. But if you are guided by the Spirit, you

are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity,

licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness,

dissensions, factions, occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I

warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,

gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ [Jesus]

have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow

the Spirit. Let us not be conceited, provoking one another, envious of one another.

Lord, Amen.

Reading Acts 2: 1-4; 42-47

When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly

there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in

which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to

rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in

different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. They devoted themselves to the

teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the

prayers. Awe came upon everyone, and many wonders and signs were done through the

apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their

property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need.

Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple area and to breaking

bread in their homes. They ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of heart, praising

God and enjoying favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to their number

those who were being saved.

Homily

Song of Reflection

Pray, Dear Lord Jesus, I renounce Satan and all my sinful ways that keep me separated from you. I

thank you for dying on the Cross in order to save me from my sins and with your Tesurrection

you bring me to new life in you. I wish to surrender myself to you and follow you as the Lord of

my heart. I ask you to baptize me in the Holy Spirit and in power, that I might follow you more

closely and love you more deeply all the days of my life. Let the gifts of the Holy Spirit come

alive in me. In your precious name I pray. Amen

Disciples Called To Witness: The New Evangelization Prayer

Gracious and merciful God, we pray that through the Holy Spirit all Catholics may hear the call

of the New Evangelization and seek a deeper relationship with your Son, Jesus.

We pray that the New Evangelization will renew the Church, inspiring all Catholics to “go forth

and make disciples of all nations”and transform society through the power of the Gospel.

We pray for all members of the Church, that we heed the words of Christ

—“do not be afraid”— and strengthened by the Holy Spirit’s gift of courage,

give witness to the Gospel and share our faith with others.

We pray that we may become like the father of the prodigal son —filled with compassion for

our missing brothers and sisters— and run to embrace them upon their return.

We pray that all people yearning to know Christ and the Church may encounter him through

the faithful who witness to his love in their lives.

Loving God, our Father, strengthen us to become witnesses to the saving grace of your Son,

Jesus, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever

and ever. Amen
