Christina and Cameron Last week, I attended the 171 st Council of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas in Waco and also traveled to Bay City, Texas for a dental appoint- ment. In Waco I visited with Cameron Spoor, one of the kids who served as a cabin counselor and staff member for several of my sessions at Camp Allen. In Bay City I visited with Christina Humphries, a kid in the EYC of St. Mark’s from many years ago. Cameron is now The Rev. Cameron Spoor—taking over my camp session this summer. Christina is now Dr. Christina Humphries, the dentist who actually managed my appointment. My conclusion at the week’s end: The church and the world are in really good hands! There in front of our very eyes is the harvest of a new generation. We see evidence right here in Galveston as well—young parents who be- lieve in Baptism and in Christian Formation, young educators who are committed to raising up scientists and engineers and scholars, young volunteers who desire to serve the poor and vulnerable, young church leaders who are thirsty for Gospel News. Trinity Episcopal Church has been a living, breathing community on this corner for a long time—179 years. Generations have gone forth from this place to serve the greater human fami- ly the whole time, and this time is no exception. Thank God for that truth. As I approach retirement this summer, I am so peaceful and confident in the leadership of our parish and in the work that will unfold in a time of transition. As new people visit us in these weeks and months, I think to myself: You need to join this church! This is where the action is! As we prepare to move into the seasons of Lent and Easter, keep an eye out for opportunities to worship and serve. And keep an eye out for the next dentist, or priest, or community leader— they may be small now, but time flies in the Kingdom of the Living God! Faithfully, The Rev. Susan J. christian formation news

ADULT FORMATION - FEBRUARY 2020 February’s four Sunday mornings are devoted to discussing/answering questions on “Everything you ever wanted to know about The Episcopal Church.” Please encourage friends and parishioners to send in advance questions/topics they’d like to talk about – anything on liturgy, worship, mannerisms, theology, eth-ics, etc.

Trinity goes to the Movie was another

huge success on Sunday night, February

9 in Eaton Hall. The part documentary, part historical biopic,

COME BEFORE WINTER about Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer

and the German resistance against Adolf Hitler’ Nazis was

sobering to watch. The conversation following was just as

deep and evocative. Join us again on March 8 at 7pm in

Eaton Hall to see THE PRINCESS BRIDE.

Week-day Adult Bible Study continues on Thursday evenings in the Acts of the Apostles.

We’re delving into the Book, inquiring into the historical and socio-cultural contexts of the

Greco-Roman world of Jesus Christ and the religious sensibilities of those who heard and

followed him, as well as the understandings that influenced their response to his message.

More importantly, we’re seeking to discern how all of those forces are reflected in our own

day, i.e., what the early Church may have to teach the present-day Church. Please join us

in upstairs Eaton Hall on Thursday evening at 7 to 8pm following the prayer service of

healing.

TEC Women’s Bible Study: Starting March 2nd, Monday, 5:30-7:00pm. We will study Revelations: Getting to Know the Bible Series. This 12-week study is made up of four basic

components: (1) reflection questions help readers engage the text at a deeper level; (2) “Gospel Glimpses” highlight the gospel of grace throughout the book; (3) “Whole-Bible Connections” show how any given passage connects to the Bible’s overarching story of redemption, culminating in Christ; and (4) “Theological Soundings” identify how historic orthodox doctrines are taught or reinforced throughout Scripture. No preparation needed. Child care provided. Bring a snack to share if you can. Mondays in Kelso Library. Contact Danielle if you are interested, want to sign up, or for more information at [email protected].

Diocesan Bishop Andy Doyle will visit Trinity Church on Sunday, March 22. He will preach and preside at the 10:30am worship ser-vice of Baptism and Confirmation and meet with the Vestry. Baptism is the entry into Christ’s body throughout the world, and is open to all ages—infant through very old! Please speak with Rev. Susan or Rev. Edward if you are interested. Confirmation is how a Baptized person becomes an official adult Episcopalian, and is open to middle schoolers and above. If you want to join us, or just desire to learn more about our denomination or our parish church, here is the opportunity: Discovery Series in One Day: Saturday, March 14 from 9:00 to 3:30 (Lunch and child-care provided.) Discovery Series in Two Parts: Sunday, March 8 from 12:00 to 3:30, and Sunday, March 15 from 12:00 to 3:30. (Lunch and child-care provided.)

We will learn about the Bible, about the history of the entire Chris-

tian community, and about our history as a denomination.

Bring all of your questions and all of your curiosity!

Save the Date: May 31st Celebrating the Ministries of

The Rev. Susan and Bill Kennard Please join in the celebration of farewell for the Ken-nards. That weekend, their extended family will join us for worship and fellowship. We will have a picnic lunch on the garth following the 10:30am service with snow cones, sidewalk chalk, etc. Rev. Susan has requested that people bring or send in a picture, letter, card, or anything like that, for a scrapbook of Trinity Days. It is also customary for the parish to take up a collection as a farewell gift—Camille will pool contributions into one check in June. Susan and Bill have loved every minute of their time in Galveston and look forward to a big old party! The

next week, movers will roll into Jackson Square and begin the journey to Ashland, Missouri—the home of their kids and extended family.

Dear Families and Friends of Trinity School,

Finding one’s voice is never easy; I can remember with great clarity the moment in

grade 5 when I had to speak in front of a group for the first time. It took so much courage to stand before

adults and peers and give my report on James Knox Polk. I only remember that I had received the clunker of

presidents and did not have the meat in a good president to get me through that speech. My friends who had

Lincoln and Kennedy knocked their presentations out of the park, but James Knox Polk, our 11th President,

was not a President who would hold the interest of my peers. I can barely remember the “before” of that moment, however, I do remember

how scared I was. What has stayed with me is the exhilaration I felt when it was over. I remember fumbling through the encyclopedia find-

ing facts like George M. Dallas was his Vice President and that he was childless; whatever that meant. I felt a kind of power that I would

work to cultivate and hold my own in my growing self-consciousness of stumbling through just trying to reach the end.

Students at Trinity School have many opportunities to be front and center. Beginning School students offer personal prayers in connection

to the day’s homily in Chapel. Kindergarten students perform at the Kindergarten Circus as we all gather in the company of our close-knit

community to encourage them along and to reminiscence about when we were in that position. In Grade 1 students carry the cross up

onto the altar and are seen front and center at Lessons and Carols. Using a microphone, Grade 2 students share the suffrages at chapel

and 3rd through 5th Graders prepare speeches as part of their campaigns to hold offices in our student council and on various programs

like the Living Museum, school ambassadors and reports on countries. Each student offers ideas for making Trinity a stronger school and

their self-esteem becomes a little greater.

Trinity students put their hearts into these prayers and performances. They have a chance to offer up an intention to God while they create

space for practicing self-confidence and delivering a message. As an Episcopal School, we often talk about our “calling” in life, and we

expect that students can feel listened to in a non-threatening way as they are called to speak their hearts in their own community.

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.”

– Maya Angelou

Ali Uhle, a native of Tomball, TX is a first-year student in the UTMB Physical Therapy Doctoral program. She was inspired to enter the profession by a physical therapist who helped her recover from a high school soccer injury. “My therapist understood my fears about getting back into sports, and helped me recover quickly,” she said. “I have always been involved in sports, and the experience with my own injury made me want to practice physical therapy from an athlete’s perspective. Athletes don’t want to quit, they want to keep go-ing, push through the pain.” After one too many soccer injuries, she said, her parents urged her to take up a less dangerous sport. So, naturally, she took up pole vaulting! Ali earned a track scholarship at the University of Texas at Austin (her personal best in the pole vault was 13 feet, 9.75 inches – high enough to leap over a one-story house). Along the way to earning a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science, Ali volunteered at Dell Chil-dren’s Hospital in Austin and discovered the joy of helping children. “They touched my heart, and now I know I want to work with children.” She worked at a special needs clinic in Austin and was inspired to aim toward a career helping special needs children. She said she fell in love with UTMB at first sight, when she came for an application interview. “They made me feel so welcome, so at home in a small community. I cried on the way home with my mother, worried I wouldn’t get accepted. I was overjoyed the day my acceptance letter arrived.” She joined Willie T’s through that first interview, too. “They told me about how there are so many people at Willie T’s who help take care of us. They are the nicest, sweetest people, and the free meals on Wednesdays are great. I don’t know any school that has anything like Willie T’s.” Ali’s hobbies no longer include pole vaulting, but she still loves outdoor sports – volleyball, softball, flag football, for example. She also

enjoys less strenuous activities like playing the harp and watching Galveston’s sunrises and sunsets. - by Pat Welsh

The Happening Experience - 9th-12th Grade

The Happening is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Through this experience, Happening encourages high schoolers’ participation

in one's own parish and youth group. The Happening movement thinks that Christianity is not only relevant today but also can

penetrate many areas of school life and transform the world. It does not propose a new type of spirituality but provides a method

through which one's spirituality may be developed, nourished, lived, and shared in fellowship with Christians willing to dedicate their

lives to God in an ongoing manner. Those attending Happening listen to thought-provoking and challenging talks given by mem-

bers of the staff and clergy. These talks are designed to help the Happeners get to know God. The fee for the weekend is $75

and includes meals and lodging.

The Yes Experience - 6th-8th Grade

A Youth Encounter Spirit (Y.E.S.) weekend brings together members of the 6th-8th-grade youth of the Diocese of Texas as a

Christian community. The focus is on "who Christ is." Y.E.S. helps foster a clearer appreciation of self, richer relationships with

others, and a deeper experience with Jesus. The aim is for those who attend to discover new things about themselves, their relation-

ships, God, and the church. The weekend is designed to provide an atmosphere of openness where participants can ask questions

and have the freedom to explore answers without fear of judgment. A team of adults and teens plan and run the weekend. The fee

for the weekend is $75 and includes meals and lodging. Sign Up at - https://www.epicenter.org/happening/

Parents will need to pick up their children at Camp Allen so they can experience the closing ceremony on

FREDERICK CHARLES SCHLEMMER, II died January 12, 2020 in Houston, Tex-as. Fred was born in Watts Bar Dam, Ten-nessee on Au-gust 10, 1943 and grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. At Trinity Episco-pal Church, he served as a member of the vestry, as a lay

reader, and a head usher. In recent years, Fred devoted much of his time assisting and serving the homeless. A memorial service was held at Trinity on Friday, Janu-ary 31, 2020.

JOSEPH FRANCIS HIGGINS died peacefully in his sleep, January 12, 2020. Born Septem-ber 4, 1935, to Mary Ann McCaan and Patrick Joseph Hig-gins, Irish immi-grants, he was the 6th of 8 children. A fu-neral service for Joe was held at Trinity on January 17, 2020.

Our church has lost a few beautiful souls in the last few months, and it seems we all need some time and space to reflect on those losses — silently or aloud, alone or

with others. On Wednesday even-ing, February 12 the Reverend Ken-nard hosted “a time of mourn-ing” for anyone who simply need-ed some time to reflect on their loss recently, in a community of fel-low mourners.

That opportunity will come again on Sunday evening, March 15 following the 5:30pm Eucharist. The gathering will be upstairs in Eaton Hall.

Treasurer’s report to annual meeting, by Rowan Dougherty

Balance Sheet of Total Assets, Total Liabilities, Fund Principal & Restricted Funds - December 2019 vs. 2018 — Our “footings” have increased from $7,478,247 in 2018 to $8,019,782 in 2019, which increase represents sale of the Eaton Hall tax credits, market appreciation of the Church’s investment portfolio handled by the Diocese, and receipt of prepaid 2020 pledges. “Current Assets” include our operating cash deposits at our Banks, “Temporary Restricted” cash funds and the Eaton Hall tax credits ($550,652), funds which the Vestry currently is using for the renovation work on the Sanctuary. “Investments” is the Participating Fund invested with the Episcopal Diocese of Texas which represents Trinity’s endowment. A comparison of the 2019 figure ($1,727,809) and 2018 ($1,678,664), plus factoring in the amount transferred to support operations in 2019 ($85,800), shows an 8% total return on our endowment. Not too bad for a conservatively managed bond portfolio in today’s market. 2019 Actual Revenues & Expenses - Revenues include Pledges, Plate & Special Offer-ings, Other Contributions & Income, Reserve & Endowment Transfers, totaling $796,019. Expenses all of Trinity’s obligations and commitments, namely, to the Diocese of Texas, our Parish Ministries, Property Expenses, Personnel Costs, and various Administrative Expenses, also totaling $796,019. The 2019 Net Total, a relation of revenues vs. expens-es, was a $0.00 balance. This balance was achieved in part from a transfer from our “Temporary Restricted” accounts to sup-port cash flow during the latter part of the year. In a sense, we borrowed from ourselves to finance operations up to the amount of $41,058, but by year-end we were comfortable in paying back that amount by half due to improved cash flow, namely from our receipt of 2020 prepaid pledges I/a/o $87,936. The 2020 Budget - In October 2019, our Finance Committee began working on a 2020 budget. After deliberations over nu-merous budget versions, we have submitted one that the Vestry subsequently approved on Jan. 5 th this year. This budget indi-cates Total Revenues of $782,920 and Total Expenses of $808,270. Unfortunately, the net result is a projected deficit of $25,350; in contrast, our projected deficit for 2019 was $43,643. Let me remind you that 2019 Revenues & Expenses were in balance, resulting in a “zero balance” net total. Total Expenses. We have thoroughly reviewed the projected expenses and have honed them down as much as possible without hurting any of the programs that are vital to the life of Trinity. The 2020 figure is totally in line with what we have experi-enced in prior years and what we finished with in 2019. Total Revenues - Currently, we are projecting Total Pledge Income to be $500,000. This amount, at over 60% of the Total Revenues, only covers about 60% of the Total Expenses. For the coverage of the balance of expenses, we will have to rely in part on the transfers from our Temporary Restricted Endowed, Non-Endowed, & Vestry Designated Accounts as we have in past years. By late January our Stewardship Campaign, had netted a total of 103 pledges. Our goal is 115 pledges. We had 96 pledge commitments in 2019. Of the 103 pledges received for 2020, 19 are new to Trinity; hooray! We welcome them to our family. Let me thank all those who have made a commitment to the work of Trinity by making a pledge for 2020. We encourage those

who have not yet made a pledge, to please consider doing so. We all have a hand in supporting Trinity’s mission. Audits for 2017 and 2018 have been completed by Ham, Langston, & Brezina, LLP, an accounting firm. The audit of 2019 will be conducted by mid-year. Audits and all the Church’s financials are available for review by members in the Parish Office. Parishion-ers who are interested in the Church’s finances are also welcome to attend the Finance Committee’s meetings; we meet each month on the third Tuesday. Meanwhile, if anyone has a question about the Church’s finances, please feel free to ask me at anytime. Finally, please help me to thank sincerely Camille Haglund, our Director of Finance, without whom this meticulous and accurate accounting would not be possible. Camille puts in hours upon hours, far beyond someone in her position would normally put in.

Thanks to my fellow members of the Finance Committee as well, and to the Vestry for their support.
