1. Introduction

“Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” Vince Lombardi; American Football League coach

The goal of Montfort College is to provide students with a quality education while developing students who are hard workers with high moral standards and who can lead.

Students are trained not only to always make the right decisions but also to grow up healthy in mind, body and spirit.

As part of this programme of student development, EP has been sending student on leadership training on a yearly basis.

This year, MCEP organized for the first time their own leadership workshop. And based on the survey, it was a success.

2. Aims of the Workshop

The workshop aimed to create opportunities for EP students to learn in an experiential manner what leadership is all about.

i. reflect on their role and understand how their leadership impacts on achieving success in life;

ii. share ideas on how to best achieve a desired goal;

iii. identify critical competencies they require to perform their given tasks successfully;

iv. be able to withstand the uncertainties and deal with them as they appear.

3. Participants

In all, 84 selected students from MCEP, M1 to M6, participated in this workshop. They were all considered to be student leaders in their own classes.

Students were divided into 8 groups of 10 to 11 students consisting of ALL the levels in each group.

For complete list of Attendees please refer to Addendum 1

B. Blindfold Trust Activity

And

C. Catch me when I fall (B and C were run concurrently)

One member of the team is selected and stands on a raised platform, next they fall backwards relying on the support of their team to catch them. This quick team building activity is all about support and trust and great when in the forming stage of team development.Equipment Required: Raised platform (elevation around 1-2 metres) or grass patchSpace Required: Minimal. Delivered either indoors or outdoors.Group Size: 20 to 40 ideally.Total Time: 50 mins10 minutes brief and set up35 minutes for everyone to try the challenge5 minutes ReviewBrief/Challenge InstructionsOne person is selected (or volunteers) to try the challenge first. They stand on the raised platform, waiting for their team mates. The rest of the group should form 2 vertical lines facing each other on ground level. The volunteer (faller) should stand with their back to the rest of the team, with their arms crossed.A stable landing area should be provided by the rest of the team using their arms to protect the faller. Once everyone is ready and in position, the volunteer should freely fall in the direction of the catchers. The aim of the catchers is to catch the faller, so they may need to adjust themselves to ensure the volunteer lands safely in the landing area.Once you have completed the first fall. Take time to discuss it with the group. Asking them how they found it? Allow all members of the team to take turns as the faller.

D. EggdropType of activity: Energiser Participants: 6-50 Timing: 15-30 Minutes Key themes: Teamwork, Creativity, Time Management Overview Teams of between 3 and 5 participants are asked to make a structure from limited materials, which will prevent a raw egg from breaking when it is dropped by the facilitator from a height of 10ft.

Equipment and Layout Boxes of plastic drinking straws to enable each team to be issued with approximately 50 strawsOne roll of gaffer/duck/cloth tape 1 sheet of newspapers1 roll of stringRaw eggs – allow 2 per team to accommodate breakages during construction Step ladders or safe point from which to drop the egg Sufficient clear floor/table space for teams to work on their device. Running the Activity 1. Introduce this as a creative challenge with very few rules 2. State that the objective is that each team must design and build a structure that will prevent their egg from breaking when dropped from a height of 10 feet onto a solid floor (do not give any guidance as to the style of design, if questioned simply restate the objective) 3. The teams have just fifteen minutes in which to build their structure 4. Should more than one team succeed in protecting their egg, the winner will be determined by the fewest straws used. 5. Issue each team with approximately 50 drinking straws, one egg and a 1 meter length of gaffer/duck tape 6. Encourage the teams to work out of sight of one another7. During the exercise walk around the teams giving time checks and monitoring progress 8. After 15 minutes call the teams together around the drop area 9. As the facilitator, you should drop the eggs but make sure you insist that the teams are satisfied with how you aim and make the drop or you may get the blame for a breakage.

Review and Conclusions Ask the teams what happened during the design and construction phaseAsk whether their design changed and whyIdentify any positive individual contributions that you noticed during the taskAsk what each team (starting with the least successful) would do differently if they were to repeat the exerciseThe infinite variety of solutions to this exercise it make it an excellent creative energiser, after which teams are likely to be more open to creative thinking

E. Treasure HuntThe whole Horizon Village garden was used as our Treasure Hunt ground. The Student volunteers, Michael and Sandy were excellent assistants to us. They were also very hard-working and were always aware of what support was needed where.Michael Cresswell and his team did a commendable job.

Rules:Treasure Hunt can be played as individuals or teams competing for time o reward. It is fun to play either inside or out. We played outside. The goal of the game is to lead the seekers through a set of clues that takes them from place to place to find a treasure. The “seekers” need to read each clue they find and figure out the next location. For clues please see Addendum 4 To start:A game organizer must create and hide the clues to set up the game for the “seekers.” Cut small squares of paper for the clues. For children who can’t read – write the clue word with a drawing of where they are to look. For children who can read, write out the clue location. For older children (or even adults), challenge them with riddles or trivia questions to find the clue location.Keep the clues a distance apart, making sure the location of your final clue accommodates the size of the treasure Hiding the clues:The best way to hide the clues in Treasure Hunt is to read the first clue, put it in a starting place (we use the kitchen) and hide the next clue in the location written on the clue you just read. Follow the same path the kids will when they search. Read each clue before folding and hiding it, so that you know where to go to next. The clues were hidden all over Horizon Village.

Playing the game:Children are handed the starter clue. It tells them the location to hunt for the next clue on their way to the treasure. As many or as few clues can be prepared and hid. The final clue leads to the treasure. Treasures can be whatever you want, we used Chupa Chups bought by Master Damian - anything from treats and toys to special prizes and promises.

Hints: Keep the clues from your treasure hunt for next time. You can just mix up the order and hide the note in a new spot at each location. The older the kids and the more times they have played, the tougher the hiding spots.Or let the older kids split into teams and create each other’s clue locations.

NOTE: If it had rained we would have used video and worksheet to do this game.

F. Foot washing (Private and not all students participated)From the Catholic tradition (since Jesus Christ commanded it)HOLY THURSDAY: What is the foot washing ceremony and why does it matter? Source: http://www.catholic.org/news/hf/faith/story.php?id=68009

Why did Jesus wash the Disciples' feet? It seems like such a humiliating task, yet it's also personal, almost intimate. That Jesus performed this task as one of His last acts on Earth delivers an important message of how we are supposed to be as Christians. Are we willing to wash the feet of our neighbors?

According to the Gospel, Jesus performed a final act of service for his Disciples, following the Passover meal. Arising from the table, He tied a towel about His waist and filled a basin with water. Then, one after another He washed the feet of each disciple, except Judas, who had already departed to betray Him.When Peter protested that Jesus was about to wash his feet, Christ admonished, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."

After washing the Disciples' feet, Jesus explained what He did and why. "You should wash one another's feet," He told them. "I have set an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them." (John 13:1-17)

The point Jesus was trying to make is already spelled out in the Scriptures, and needs little interpretation. We are to serve our neighbors, even if it means we must do things we might not like to do. Even if the work is dirty or hard, or even if we think it beneath us, we must still do our work. After all, Jesus Himself, the Son of God, washed the feet of His disciples. And we are no greater than Jesus, so surely we too should do the same.

In church, the foot washing ceremony is an important call for all people that they too should be willing to serve others. In the Catholic Church, this is called the Holy Thursday Mandatum, and the rite takes place after the homily. Members of the congregation are chosen to sit and have their feet washed by the priest, who plays the role of Christ. One by one, the priest will wash the participant's feet with a basin and a towel.

“When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments again he went back to the table. 'Do you understand', he said, 'what I have done to you?

JOHN 13:1-17

13 You call me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am.

14 If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you must wash each other's feet.

15 I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.

16 'In all truth I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, no messenger is greater than the one who sent him.

17 'Now that you know this, blessed are you if you behave accordingly.

Some parents did not understand; but the students did.

G. SurveyAddendum 3 for the complete survey

6. Difficulties

The following were the main issues that emerged from each activity:

A. Lecture presentation by Master Damian Leong

Master Damian had to make sure that all students were listening. He could not rest nor relax as some students would drift off.

Strategies used: Name the student who was sleepy or talking Get them to assist in moving the slides forward Ask those not listening questions Engage them in individual conversation when they are not listening or speaking to

their friends

B. Blindfold activityWe should have had 5 stations set up instead of the initial 2 which then expanded to 3.Although an effective activity to inculcate trust in one’s team mates, the activity was a slow one as the blindfolded person could not move fast.To speed things up, 5 stations with 5 separate Teachers IC.Potentially, Alumni could be used.

C. Catch me when I fallNot enough teachers were present to make this a more exciting activity. As we relied solely on volunteer teachers, we may need to make the leadership workshop a must OR INCREASE reward for participation by teachers.

D. Free Egg dropWe need to reduce the number and type of materials given as the success rate was much to high.

E. Treasure Hunt activityThe students were not monitored during this activity and therefore the “cheaters” could not be “caught”. The scope of the activity could be scaled down.

F. Foot washing ceremony (not all students could participate)We did not explain at first but the students’ reaction was for the most part open-minded. They fully understood the concept of service to others means literally serving with a humility that is Christ-like.Some parents were uncomfortable and were unwilling to accept that there is much value in following the Bible scriptures.

G. SurveyShould have been done on computer and not paper as the collation is tedious.

Page 11: ep. Web viewType of activity: Energiser Participants: 6-50 Timing: 15-30 Minutes Key themes: Teamwork, Creativity, Time Management . Overview . Teams of between 3 and

13

7. ConclusionThe students have been given participation certificates as well as the teachers as a form of recognition for their hard work and participation.

Some other more senior teachers may not have considered this activity as an important one.

Follow up leadership refresher courses should be conducted for each team.

Special mention for master Aun (Attakorn Matchanantikasamai) as he was constantly assisting Master Damian and he we observant enough and forthcoming enough to make suggestions.
