WEEK 3: MSU-NORTHERN

THE LAST TIME THEY MET ...CRAZY COMEBACK: EOU RALLIES FOR WIN IN HAVREOct. 30, 2010

HAVRE, Mont. -- Th e Eastern Oregon University football team rallied from a 27-point halft ime defi -cit to win at Montana State-Northern, 39-36.

Th e Mountaineers (5-3) (4-3) scored the opening touchdown and led 7-0 early in the fi rst quarter. MSUN then scored 34 unanswered points to lead 34-7 at halft ime. Last season, EOU and North-ern met in Havre on Halloween, and Eastern rebounded from a scary start to beat the Lights, 37-20. MSUN jumped out to a 20-0 second quarter lead before Eastern Oregon reeled off 37 unan-swered points.

“Th is team has incredible resolve,” Camp said. “I am very excited for this group of players and coach-es. Th ey continued to believe in themselves and not the scoreboard. A group of players and coaches going in the same direction, fi ghting the good fi ght, is a pretty cool thing to be involved in for student-athletes. I am very proud of my program.”

Th e Mountaineers outscored Northern 32-2 in the second half to pull off a miraculous 39-36 comeback win. EOU pulled off a similar comeback last month against the Lights in La Grande. Eastern trailed by 12 in the Sept. 18 matchup, before out-scoring MSUN, 15-0, in the fourth quarter.

Th e Lights led 34-7 at halft ime behind fi ve touch-down passes from Derek Lear. Lear threw two scores to Matt Stuart, two to Brandon O’Brien and one to Stephen Silva. Northern’s defense forced Eastern into six fi rst-half turnovers as well. But the Mountaineers got the last word as Northern’s only points in the second half came by way of a safety.

Eastern Oregon’s Chris Ware threw three touchdown passes in the fi nal 30 minutes to help overtake the Lights (3-5) (3-5), including a 45-yard game-winner with 2:59 left to play. Ware fi nished 23 of 38 for 369 yards through the air and 47 on the ground. Th e junior threw three interceptions in the game.

Kevin Sampson became the fourth player in EOU

history to run for 1,000 yards in a single season in the victory. Th e Seattle native ran 30 times for 103 yards and had two touchdowns.

Kirk Miller caught three touchdown passes, and had seven receptions for 165 yards. Th e 165 yards in the game is the 8th most in school history. Th e senior tied two school records, touchdown recep-tions in a season and total touchdowns in a season.

Northern’s Derek Lear completed 17 of his 34 pass attempts for 295 yards. Th e freshman threw fi ve touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Th e Moun-taineers held the Lights to 63 yards on the ground. EOU had 616 total yards of off ense in the game.

Matt Gayman and Marc-Avery Airhart each had interceptions for Eastern Oregon, and Howard McDonald recovered a fumble. McDonald led EOU with 11 tackles, eight were solo. Seath Kimball had 3.5 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss.

Nick Knell made a key 26-yard fi eld goal late in the game for the Mountaineers. Ricky Parkhouse fi nished with 126 yards punting, including a 79-yard punt.

Th e win was only the second all-time for the Mountaineers in Havre. Eastern now holds an 8-5 all-time advantage over the Lights, aft er beating MSUN for the fi ft h consecutive time. EOU’s streak over Northern is the longest over any Frontier Conference opponent.

WEEK 3: MSU-NORTHERN

2011 EOU FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK 2-0, 2-0 FRONTIER

WARE ONE AWAY FROM OWNING LUCKY NO. 13Eastern Oregon quarterback, Chris Ware, is one rushing touchdowns from breaking the school’s rushing touchdowns in a career record. Th e senior has scored 21 rushing touch-downs in his career, tying Damien Johnson’s seven-year-old record at EOU. Ware currently holds 12 school records. Th e Rainier, Ore. native has a chance to break record number 14 later this season. He is 57 rushing attempts from topping Tim Sicocan’s 11-year-old school record.

SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVEEastern Oregon and MSU-Northern enter this weekend’s showdown as the top two teams in the conference. It marks the fi rst time in fi ve years, a school not named Carroll will be playing for the conference lead aft er three games. Th e Mountaineers enter the game as the conference leader in scoring off ense averaging 36 points per game, while Northern’s de-fense currently has the league’s best defense giving up an average of 14 points per game. Th e Lights’ defense have stymied opponents on the ground, allowing only 89 yards per game.

I CAN SEE CANADA FROM MY PORCHBlue Pony Stadium in Havre, Mont. is only 34 miles from the U.S./Canadian border. Th ere’s a reason why they’re called the “Northern Lights.” Th e distance betweeen Havre and La Grande is the largest in the conference. Th e 730-mile trek is a 12-hour bus ride and creates quite the home fi eld advantage. Eastern has won in only two of its seven trips to Havre, while MSUN has only one win in La Grande in six attempts. Saturday is Homecoming for the Lights and Northern will look to turnaround a 2-8 home record over the past two seasons.

SOME KIND OF UPSETEastern Oregon’s monumental upset last week at No. 1 Carroll had many storylines. Th e Mountaineers ended the Saints’ 44-game conference win streak, 31-game home conference win streak and 15-game win streak. Th e victory also broke a streak of 14 straight losses to Carroll for EOU dating back to 1999. It marked the fi rst time in Eastern Oregon University history an athletic program beat a No. 1 ranked team. It was Tim Camp’s fi rst win over a Top 10 team. Nelson Stadium was quiet aft er the game as Eastern sang its fi ght song.

WELCOME TO NEW TERRITORYTh e Mountaineers cracked the Top 15 in the NAIA Top 25 for the fi rst time in school history Monday. Following Eastern’s win at Carroll, the Mountaineers climbed to No. 12, the highest ranking in school history. EOU’s previous high was No. 17 aft er a 3-1 start on Oct. 10, 2005. EOU climbed to No. 18 on Oct. 19, 2009. Also for the fi rst time, the Frontier Conference has four of its six members ranked in the Top 25. Carroll dropped from one to fi ve, Rocky Mountain entered the poll at No. 20, as did Montana State-Northern at 23.

NOT A BAD STARTEastern is 2-0 to begin the season, but can break ground with a win Saturday at Northern. Th e Mountaineers can start the season 3-0 for only the fourth time in the program’s 82-year history. EOU has started two seasons, 4-0, including the school’s best start in 1980, when Eastern won the fi rst six games of the season.
