Eötvös Loránd University

• Hungary’s Oldest and Largest University• Founded in 1635

• It is an elite institution of higher education

• Named after one of it professors, the world famous physicist, Loránd Eötvös

• Over the last hundred years, the university has had many world famous scientists and four Nobel Prize laureates among the teachers and alumni

• Current number of students has reached 32,000 and staff consists of 1800 teachers and researchers

Language

• The forint (HUF) is the currency of Hungary• The Euro is also used; approximately 1 Euro= 300 Forints

• Student Residence Halls: 26,000 HUF

• Renting a flat: 40,000 HUF

• Meals: 60,000 HUF

• Local Transportation: 3,000 HUF

• Other expenses: 30,000 HUF

Crime and Security

• Budapest is a relatively safe city, but it is still a large city

• Be aware of your belongings and the people around you• Pick-pocketers usually target tourist areas

• Avoid demonstrations or political rallies• These can sometimes turn violent

• Always carry your passport with you• A photocopy is NOT a valid substitute and you can be fined

for not carrying your passport with you

Alcohol Related Crime

• Many crimes involve alcohol• Robbery, physical and sexual assault

• Recent scams in Hungary occur in bars where drinks cost hundreds of dollars• Make sure you see a menu with listed prices and never

leave your drink alone with anyone

• Carry minimal cash and a cell phone to communicate

• Stay in groups or pairs

• Call a cab

What to Bring

• Appropriate Clothing• Try to blend into the culture around you; this will avoid

unwanted attention• Hungary has a continental climate with cold winters and hot

summers; pack appropriately for the season

• Communication• Cell phones are always a good thing to have

• Don’t bring valuables • Items can be stolen

• Don’t bring unneeded items• You will definitely have more luggage coming home than you

did going there so be prepared to make some room
