Washington, DC – As Major LeagueBaseball celebrates its All-Stargame tonight in Anaheim, CA, a

number of players are speaking out in oppositionto Arizona’s anti-Latino SB1070 law. Some areeven promising to boycott next year’s All-StarGame, scheduled to be held in Phoenix, AZ, if itis not moved to another state.

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Direc-tor of America’s Voice, “In contrast to the Ari-zona law, which pits neighbor against neighborand makes everyone who looks or sounds “for-eign” into a suspect, our nation’s pastime bringstogether people from all walks of life and nation-alities. As a country, we are better and wiser thanwhat the Arizona law represents and we shouldcommend these players for standing up for Amer-ican values.”

Among the players speaking out against theArizona law include the following:

* St. Louis Cardinals first baseman andthree time Most Valuable Player Albert Pujolshighlighted his opposition to the Arizona law, saying, " How are you going to tell me that, mebeing Hispanic, if you stop me and I don't havemy ID, you're going to arrest me? That can't be.''

* Milwaukee Brewers All-Star pitcher

Yovani Gallardo stated that “If the game is in Ari-zona, I will totally boycott."

* Jerry Hairston Jr. of the San DiegoPadres said, "It reminds me of seeing the oldmovies with the Nazis when they ask you toshow your papers. It's not right. I can't imaginemy mom -- who's been a U.S. citizen longer thanI've been alive, who was born and raised in Mex-ico -- being asked to show her papers. I can'timagine that happening. So it kind of hits homefor me."

* All-Star pitcher Heath Bell, also ofthe Padres, called for Bud Selig to move nextyear’s All-Star Game and noted that he may notattend next year’s game if he is once again se-lected, in a show of support for his Latino team-mates. Said Bell, "If I'm voted I'm going to haveto really think about it, because I have a lot offriends that are not white. Sometimes you needto stick up for your friends and family."

Dear Ms. Diane Hamel,:

RE: Voters first act and the final ethnicmakeup of the “we draw the line commis-sion” (for 2010 redistricting)

The LINC Board has authorized thisexpression of our concerns and expectationsregarding the ethnic composition of thesoon to be “we draw the line commission”,which will deal with the U.S. Constitutionrequired 2010 decennial redistricting man-date.

It is our expectation, based on the statedgoals in the commission guidelines and reg-ulations, that the selected commissionmembers represent the ethnic make up ofCalifornia’s citizens. Therefore, our expec-tation is that at least 5 (36% of 14) membersof the commission will be Hispanics. Any-thing less than that will be unacceptable andare grounds for a challenge.

Please provide us with the final statis-tics (ethnic composition, gender and partyaffiliation) of the commission and continueto keep us informed regarding this appoint-ment process.

We trust your good judgment and effortto ensure that when your selection processis completed, that all citizens will feel pos-itive about the equitable and representativeethnic make up of the commission.

Obesity is a diseasethat is affectingthe lives of many

Americans. According to theCenter for Disease Controland Prevention, one third ofAmerican adults are obese.

Dr. Dan Delgado, directorof the Pediatric HealthyLifestyle Center, believes thatobesity can be prevented at anearly age if children learn toenjoy fresh fruit and vegeta-bles.

On Saturday, July 10, Del-gado, along with some volun-teers from The SecondHarvest Food Bank of SantaClara and San Mateo Countiesbrought their “Produce Mo-bile” to Valley Health CenterEast Valley in San Jose. Therefrigerated truck was stocked

with free, fresh produce thatwere distributed for free tolow-income families.

“This project that we havewith the hospital is very im-portant because many peopletoday are not getting theproper amounts of nutritiousfood that they need to live ahealthy lifestyle,” Delgadosaid. “The only requirement isthat the families are low-in-come. We were specificallytrying to find pregnantwomen.”

On July 10, the refriger-ated truck contained 10,700pounds of produce, but it canfit up to 20,000 pounds.

“Each family gets twobags of produce and we hopemore and more people learnabout this project so that wecan fill our truck every timewe come to the hospital,” Del-gado said.

According to the Centerfor Disease Control and Pre-vention, overweight and obe-sity are both labels for rangesof weight that are greater thanwhat is generally consideredhealthy for a given height. Theterms also identify ranges ofweight that have been shownto increase the likelihood ofcertain diseases and otherhealth problems.

For adults, overweightand obesity ranges are deter-mined by using weight andheight to calculate a numbercalled the "body mass index"(BMI). BMI is used because, for most people, it correlateswith their amount of body fat.

For children and teens,BMI ranges above a normalweight have different labels(overweight and obese). Addi-tionally, BMI ranges for chil-dren and teens are defined sothat they take into accountnormal differences in body fatbetween boys and girls anddifferences in body fat at vari-ous ages.

“American’s really needto start to learn to eat healthyfood because people who areobese have a higher risk ofgetting diabetes,” Delgadosaid.

Delgado and The SecondHarvest Food Bank have beenplanning this event for about ayear and plan on being at theValley Health Center East Val-ley in San Jose every secondSaturday of every month from9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Please consider attending a communitymeeting on Wednesday, July 21 at 7 PMat City Hall Wing Room 120 to give

your input on a proposed Streetlight Master Plan.To save money and energy costs, San Jose's

Green Vision proposes converting all of the City's62,000 streetlights to zero-emission lights by 2022.The City has been testing "smart" and energy-ef-ficient LED streetlights that can be dimmed in thelate evening hours when traffic is minimal to helpachieve that goal.

Switching to white LED lights and dimmingthem during outside of peak hours may improvethe quality of light on our streets, protect the nightsky, reduce energy use and help the city cut its $4million annual streetlight energy bill by more thanhalf.

Data collected at a streetlight demonstrationin early March 2010 indicated that residents prefer

"full spectrum" (white) lights over the City's cur-rent streetlights and can see as far, if not further, under the white lights, even when the lights aredimmed by half.

Please attend a community meeting onWednesday, July 21 to provide input on the pro-posed Streetlight Master Plan. The final opportu-nity for public comment will be at the City Councilmeeting on August 31, at which the Council willvote on this item.

Feel free to send questions to [email protected] or call (408) 535-3850.

aware of this information whenit was presented at the forum,January 17,2010 at All SaintsEpiscopal Church, Palo Altoby parishioners Sigrid Pinskyand Marion Manely, who areboth involved mothers andstakeholder parents.

Sleep: Did you know thatteenagers need 9.25 hours ofsleep each night? Eighty per-cent of teenagers do not get therecommended amount ofsleep. At least 28% fall asleepin school and 22% fall asleepdoing homework. A majorityof adolescents are averaging 7hours of sleep per night, andone-quarter are getting 6 hoursof sleep or less according to P.Wolfe, a sleep research scien-tist.

Pre-schoolers need 11 to14 hours of sleep per night.Children, ages 5 to 12 yearsold need 10 to 11 hours ofsleep. Research establishedthat 54% of first to fifthgraders sleep just 9 to 10 hoursper night and 17% sleep lessthan 9 hours per night. Adultsneed 8 hours of sleep eachnight (healthy range is 7 to 9hours according to the Na-tional Sleep Foundation.

What Is The Impact OfNot Having Enough Sleep?By every measure, humanfunctioning declines impactingmemory, attention, mood

Dr. Madeline Levine,(Palo Alto PTA Council Pres-entation, 2008) stated, “If youdo only one thing, make sureyour children and teenagersare getting enough sleep.”

SCHOOL: In a nationalsurvey, students were asked touse two words to describe howthey felt in school. The wordmost often used by studentswas “bored” followed by“tired.” (L. Lyons, Most TeensAssociate School with Bore-dom, Fatigue, Gallup Poll,2004). Studies have estab-lished that the time kids spenddoing homework has increased51% since 1961 (2004 nationalsurvey of more than 2,900children by Institute for SocialResearch, University of Michi-gan). Moderate to high levelsof stress are experienced by 9to 13 year old children as re-ported by 70% of Bay Areaparents. What causes thestress? Parents surveyed saidschoolwork and homework.(Lucile Packard Foundationfor Children’s Health, 2005)KidsData,org. New Poll High-lights Parents’ Views on Phys-ical, Emotional health ofChildren). Nine to 13 year oldssurveyed said they were more

stressed by academics than anyother stressor---even bullyingor family problems. (Kid-sHealth KidsPoll (2005) HowKids Handle Stress. NationalAssociation of Health Educa-tion Centers).

Research shows almost nocorrelation between homeworkand achievement for elemen-tary school students. (Cooper,H., Robinson, J.C., Patall, E.A.(2006) Does Homework Im-prove Academic Achieve-ment? A Synthesis of Research1987-2003, Review of Educa-tion Research, 761, 1-62).

It is time that these studiesand their results be known toall parents who have the re-sponsibility to nurture the de-velopment of their children. Itis time for local input by par-ents in the guidance and direc-tion of the curriculum which isused to train the children.

It is time that the profes-sional educator’s unions andgovernmental agencies under-stand the responsibility for ed-ucation begins with theparents, especially the motherwho teaches a child its initiallanguage and relationshipskills. Invariably, successfulschool districts are those thatinclude the parents as valuedstakeholders which indeedthey are.Δ

With oil uncontrollably spillinginto the Gulf of Mexico, the pa-tience towards corporate tax

breaks has begun to disappear. In San Jose, several groups and organiza-

tions gathered in front of an Arco gas station inon Tuesday, July 13, to express their anger to-wards corporations and the government that isgiving them tax breaks. Arco was selected be-cause Arco is own by BP Global.

"The governor is proposing to cut severalprograms like Medi-Cal, and yet he is propos-ing to give tax breaks to big corporations," saidSandy Perry of CHAM Ministry in San Jose."This is unfair and the corporations should beheld accountable for being greedy."

California is the fourth largest oil producingstate in the US, but it is also the only state inthe country that does not charge oil companiesa fee for extracting oil. In 2009, California oilfields produced 630,000 barrels of oil a day. Byintroducing an oil severance fee, Californiawould benefit from an estimated $1.5 billion inadditional revenues annually - offsetting theneed for disastrous cuts to health and humanservices and preserving private and public sec-tor jobs.

"We feel that the corporations should paytheir share of the taxes because that would helpkeep service and programs from being cut,"said Richard Hobbs, Associate Director for the

Services, Immigrants Rights and EducationNetwork (SIREN). "These are the programsthat greatly help immigrants and low-incomefamilies."

According to SIREN, The governor is pro-posing to ration care for Medi-Cal patients bylimiting doctor and clinic visits to 10 a year andsix prescription visits a month, limiting accessto medical supplies and equipment needed bypeople with disabilities such as wheelchairs andbreathing machines, and eliminating coverageof Adult Day Health Care. Conditions that canrequire more than 10 doctor visits per year andsix prescriptions per month include cancer, di-abetes, high-blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, multiple sclerosis and asthma.

Schwarzenegger has also proposed cuts toIn Home Support Services and food assistanceprograms for seniors and people with diabetes.

Lynn Huidekoper of the Single PayerHealthcare Coalition was at the protest becauseshe feels that the oil spill cause by BP Globalis a perfect example of how corporate greed hasruined the lives of many people. She also feelsthat some of those that support corporations likeBP Global should give some of their income tocharities that would keep these programs andservices from being in cut.

"An example of one of these people is MegWitman," Huidekoper said. "She is worth mil-lions and millions of dollars and she could givesome of it to help those who are struggling be-cause of corporate greed." For more informa-tion visit www.siren-bayarea.org.

varias parejas e incluso varios matrimonios.
